ARCHIVED Needs Help, Gluten Free Is Hard In College.
mattathayde replied to TrevFitz's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
ask when you go to whole foods where they dry gluten-free stuff in, the one up in richmond va has a large selection in one isle. if you look on their web site there is the list of gluten-free foods so if you cannot find it in stores you can just ask some one that works there. as to out back, my last attempt failed horribly, we went early when there was... -

my doc told me "if gluten free is working for you then stick to it, there is no point to make you sick for a month to get a blood test that will just confirm what we already know, and the only thing its going to change is your insurance premiums" i had gotten diagnosed by my alternative medicine doc and went gluten free before i knew about getting any...

dont worry, its going to take a good while to get used to reading labels, paying attention to the little things, and probably missing some items for a while. you will get to the point where you will re-read labels at least every few times you buy an item just to double check and make sure i know that if at this point i ate all that i would be pretty freaking...

each person is different, you will need to figure out what your issues are for you. unless you were really sick at time of Dx you probably dont have many other major issues, most of the people here that have a hard time with a lot of other things had been undiagnosed and sick for a good long while. i wasnt diagnosed until 18 and probably showed symptoms... -
ARCHIVED New To Celiac - How Careful To Be About Trace? How To Avoid?
mattathayde replied to syren4444's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
for basically all celiacs that s probably to much contamination. you dont know know if your glutened now because your body still has it in and is desensitized, once you go fully gluten free you will be able to see what the gluten is doing to you. some celiacs are ok with a bit of cross contamination while others get really sick from using the same dishes... -
ARCHIVED How The Hell Am I Supposed To Travel?
mattathayde replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
ya i am worried about my first real travel since going gluten-free that i will be taking in aug. i really only care about not being sick the first 2 days then the rest of the week i dont care if i end up in the hospital but the 2nd day i am at this even is a competition that i need to be good for (and its the last time i can compete since i will be too old... -

mattathayde replied to meanmachine22's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
i will argue with the statement that you need to be 100% gluten-free to see results at fist, you will probably see results even a lot of results. i know i sure did and i am celiac. given you will not be as good compared to being 100% gluten-free. i will agree though that as you cut out gluten (if you have an issue with it) you will have more and more of... -

WF having a small section?????? i always have seen half an isle of purly gluten-free stuff and then a lot of marked stuff around the store. they do have a little pamphlet that i think is also on line which lists everything they carry that is gluten-free that could be questionable (things like pure meat and veggies etc are not on the list IIRC) -matt -

i really want to know your recipes with the bobs because everything we have tried with it has a horrid after taste (we think it was from the fava or garbanzo bean flour part). maybe we didnt adjust correctly for it or something -matt -
im not trying to poo poo your reactions or saying its in your head to brush it off (i didnt get that you were saying i am just want to explain my thoughts a bit better). i just dont see how you can be that sensitive in certain situations yet in other areas that should have as much contamination you are fine. i just really think there has to be something...

o also get a good gluten free multivitamin if your not taking one yet (if you are taking one and have not yet checked into it make sure it is gluten free, i take a mix made by thorne). i found that helped me a whole lot, slept better, had less digestive issues even after being gluten-free for a while pick up "1000 gluten free recipes" its a great resource...

2 weeks in dont even think about elimination diets. it takes AT LEAST a month for the gluten to clear from your body and then your body can start to heal. in a couple of months if you have no results then look into it. personally i think elimination diets are a waste of time and put a lot of stress on you but i also have an alternative medicine person...

honestly i think you have another sensitivity, being in the next room from a microwave meal or touching a container that was washed after holding gluten and then touching your face i dont see how you can be that sensitive with out getting sick no matter where you go just from touching stuff that people who have touched gluten touched. do you get sick from...

for gluten-free cornflakes make sure they dont have barley malt in them (most of them have it). the arrowroot cookies are soooooooooo good, its a great choice as a snack. for bread the best thing i have found off the shelf is the enr-g tapioca loaf, its not great by it self but as a sandwich or as garlic bread its fine but i would suggest when starting... -

wow, i honestly dont know how you can eat anything from bob's, everything ive tried from them has been pretty bad if not out right horrid. we used bob's all purpose flour for cookies and my dog literally spit out the dough (and she eats any thing). ive found beths all purpose flour is much much better to use for bread ive found the tapioca loaf from... -

i was more so generally responding in regard of your thoughts than directly to them. i have found a lot of my friends are pretty good about helping me too (it helps a god chunk of the friends i hang out with at school are nursing students so for half of them i just had to say i have celiac and they knew what i was talking about. -matt -

that is a really good point, i never really thought about the food being part of friendships, i guess my friends and i always had other things we did to hang out (given my paintball team used to go out to eat all the time after we played but its not a big deal since we dont play much any more). for my friends and me we usually get together and just talk... -
you can get the tests done if you are still eating gluten, i didnt get the tests because i use an alternative testing method to allergies and sensitivities that led me to celiac and after i went gluten free a lot of med issues resolved them selves that would be caused by celiac. so i know that i have it, but the issue with this route is that i dont have...

funny anecdote, when my mom tried to make sugar cookies with bobs redmill flour our labrador who will eat almost anything spit the dough out, that was a really bad omen for me and tasting them explained why my dog spit it out. but to jason, i understand how you are frustrated, i am not as bad as a lot of people here with sensitivities but i spent all... -

honestly i personally dont believe that alcohol and vinegar messes with people due to the supposed gluten that is carried over (because i dont logically see how it can carry over, or even is there when gluten gets broken down in these strong fermentation processes and distillations) but more so because of an allergy to what it is made from idk maybe im...
