ARCHIVED Anyone Else Work In Residential Treatment?
JillianLindsay replied to JillianLindsay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, there are fresh fruits and salad available at each meal. Lukcily they use Kraft salad dressings, so I can read the labels and feel comfortable using them if they are gluten-free. The meats are marinated, but they let me look at everything they use to season it and check if it's safe. I like the peanut butter idea, I love pb and apples -
ARCHIVED Raw Food Diet For Cats
JillianLindsay replied to Jestgar's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Great As long as a vet is monitoring and your beloved kitties are getting all the nutrients they need! I don't know anything about the raw food diets, just wanted to put my two cents in about that piece of it. The other thing is that if dogs or cats are on all soft-food diets they develop more tartar on their teeth. The hard foods help chip... -
ARCHIVED Raw Food Diet For Cats
JillianLindsay replied to Jestgar's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
My hubby is a vet & has told me that the raw food diet is very unhealthy long-term because it lacks specific nutrients in an animal's diet that they get from store-bought food (approved store-bought foods are required to provide a specific level of nutrition). If your kitty is sick and will only eat those things in the short-term it's better than... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else Work In Residential Treatment?
JillianLindsay posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
For anyone who works in a group home or other type of residential treatment, you know we don't get paid well at all. You also know one of the small perks of the job is free food while working I work in a residential treatment facility with teenage boys who are struggling with addiction issues. I love my job! I also loved that we didn't have to bring... -
ARCHIVED Relief For The Pain?
JillianLindsay replied to Lola B's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sorry to hear A hot water bottle over her tummy and drinking a lot of water (or gluten-free herbal tea if she can manage it). Hopefully others know of some effective OTC medications she can take. Hope she feels better quickly, Jillian -
ARCHIVED New Celiac With Little Success
JillianLindsay replied to kblair's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome to the forum Kathleen I hope it at least feels good to have a diagnosis so you can get yourself on the path to healing. And yes, many people have problems with new foods when they first go gluten-free. Many people need to avoid dairy, high-acidic foods (cherries, tomatoes, etc.) and highly processed foods (perhaps the peanut butter?). Sticking... -
ARCHIVED It's Official...
JillianLindsay replied to JillianLindsay's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Me too jkr! Back in December my DR sent me home with a prescription for Zantac and said I had an ulcer. Glad we got to the bottom of things! Jillian -
ARCHIVED Reacting To Caffeine
JillianLindsay replied to JillianLindsay's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thanks so much everyone for your suggestions -- much appreciated! Princess -- No, I do not react to cheese or milk or any dairy (at least I've got that going for me!) S's Mom -- I just figured out that Starbucks has a lot of celiac-friendly beverages, so I will venture out and try some new teas on for size Janet -- I was doing that before... -

JillianLindsay replied to LauraZ's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You're welcome I hope you have a positive response on the diet and that the biopsy can answer some questions for you. Good luck, Jillian -
ARCHIVED Talking To University Department
JillianLindsay replied to Googles's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Another young lady went through a very similar experience and was successful in being exempted from the meal plan. Her school newspaper even did a story about her Here is the thread from that discussion: https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.ph...=discrimination -
ARCHIVED Reacting To Caffeine
JillianLindsay replied to JillianLindsay's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes, I have been drinking decaf with no problems. *sigh* I was hoping for a different answer lol but I figured I'd have to give up my morning coffee for a little longer. Ah well, fruit and water in the AM is much healthier anyway -
ARCHIVED Edy's Sherbert, Starbucks Beverages
JillianLindsay replied to Kiki2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I can have ANYthing at Starbucks aside from the mocha, white mocha, or anything with chocolate chips??!! What about all the syrups they use for diffferent drinks? What about Vivanos?? Is this only in the U.S., or does it apply to Canada as well? I have been avoiding Starbucks for the past 6 weeks (since going gluten-free) out of fear of getting sick lol... -
I didn't see anything that would cause offence Just remember though: even if you don't have symptoms, ingesting gluten is still harmful to your body. Wishing you good health, Jillian

ARCHIVED Exhausted After Gluten?
JillianLindsay replied to tkm831's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
H yes! Fatigue is my absolute worst glutened symptom. My GI symptoms aren't too bad, but the fatigue is just debilitating. I feel like I'm trying to wade through water or have weights attached to me, my body just feels so heavy. -
ARCHIVED Are These Celiac Symptoms?
JillianLindsay replied to Mirt's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Everyone has very different symptoms, and you seem to be aware of the genetic component of celiac disease My DR recommended family members get tested at the silghtest symptom because celiac disease is highly genetic. Before making any diet changes it certainly doesn't hurt to get the blood test. If I were to eat a pretzel I would probably have immediate... -
ARCHIVED Reacting To Caffeine
JillianLindsay posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Good morning everyone, I've been gluten-free for 6 weeks now! *bows* and sadly, sitting here without a cup of coffee Ever since going gluten-free I have begun to react to coffee. I had a lactose intolerance test done and it was negative, so it's not the milk. Sugar/sweetener doesn't bother me when sprinkled on my hot breakfast cereal or in decaf... -
It's a personal decision and individual reaction. Some people choose to be 100% vigilant and not consume anything that may have come in contact with gluten. Some are extremely sensitive and will have reactions to even the teenist trace. Trace amounts can be harmful to those with celiac disease. However, just because something was produced in a facility...

ARCHIVED Buttered Popcorn?

ARCHIVED It's Official...
JillianLindsay replied to JillianLindsay's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Sandi, They can usually tell right away if there are flattened villi (the folds in your small bowel that help you to absorb nutrients from your food). I didn't have any obvious stunted villi but a lot of inflammation and lymphocytes. My GI doc had to take a lot of biopsies and have them sent off to a pathologist to determine whether or not it was... -
Did your DR draw blood to test for celiac disease? It seems odd that he would start you on a gluten-free diet without any testing. If you have vitamin b12 deficiency you may be noticing fatigue. My celiac disease caused me to be anemic and whenever I get glutened I get horrible fatigue. Good luck Jillian

ARCHIVED Chicken Ideas Please
JillianLindsay replied to Ariauna's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have Lea & Perrins Worchestershire sauce (left over from my gluten-eating days) and the first ingredient is malt vinegar (from barley). I'm in Canada and I know the ingredients differ between Canada & the U.S., but make sure you read the ingredients before buying/using! I like buying gluten-free broullion cubes of varying flavours and cooking... -
ARCHIVED Talking To University Department
JillianLindsay replied to Googles's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
They most certainly need to give you the name of the food suppliers so that you can contact them directly. Be firm and insist! If the graduate secretary won't help you, ask to speak to her supervisor or go over her head for help because her ignorance cannot lead to you getting sick. Good luck!! -
ARCHIVED Tried Oats For The First Time...ouch!
JillianLindsay replied to leadmeastray88's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Kim Which Sobey's was it?? I go to Unicity (close to home) and they have a lot of gluten-free options but not a dedicated section! I haven't been brave enough to try oats since going gluten-free sorry you didn't take to them well. Speaking of local gluten-free options, have you tried the EnviroKidz organic cereals? I love the peanut butter... -
ARCHIVED Buttered Popcorn?

I emailed re: my question and this is the response I received: "Good afternoon, Please note that I have checked with the buyer and the vendor on your request. They have informed me that the Great Value microwave popcorn does not have any wheat gluten in it however it does have natural corn gluten. Corn naturally has gluten. This product is...
