ARCHIVED For Those Of You With Physician Diagnosis
JillianLindsay replied to JBaby's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
STARVING for the first week or two, now on week four and still eat a lot more (but healthier, LOTS of fresh fruit, veggies, etc) and have lost a few pounds. Others have said the constant hunger subsides but right now your body is healing and is soaking up all the nutrients it can get that it wasn't able to absorb before. So enjoy lots of healthy, gluten... -
ARCHIVED Who Uses A Dietician/nutritionist?
JillianLindsay replied to JBaby's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I saw a dietitian last week (~3 weeks after my Dx). I had already done a lot of research on my own and she really couldn't tell me anything new. We just went through my diet and made sure I was following the food guide. Luckily it was covered by insurance, so I didn't pay to be told I was already doing everything right. -
ARCHIVED Is What The Doc Said True?
JillianLindsay replied to bunnybaby's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
What?! Your DR is grossly misinformed. My DR said that Celiac doesn't cause vitamin B12 and Iron deficiency (which is one of the main indicators). DR's are smart, but they can't (and don't) know everything, that's for sure! I don't have DH so I can't comment on that, however the primary reason for people to go gluten-free is because they see a reduction... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-eating Boys Contaminating My Kitchen :p
JillianLindsay replied to JillianLindsay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks so much everyone for your helpful advice I think I was feeling a bit sorry for myself, but having practical steps I can take makes it feel much more manageable. I will definitely make a corner of the kitchen that is for me only and buy a few items (cutting board, spatula/spoons, margerine, toaster, etc) that are mine only. Thanks, and feel... -
ARCHIVED Did I Get Glutened?
JillianLindsay replied to Desy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Ugh, sorry you are not feeling well, we can all relate! I am also in Canada and have been gluten-free for a month. I don't eat anything that lists "natural flavour" or "artificial flavour" in the ingredients to be on the safe side, unless I contact the company directly or the info is online somewhere. Try to be patient while your body heals and... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-eating Boys Contaminating My Kitchen :p
JillianLindsay posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am recently Dx and gluten-free for nearly one month! Some of this is venting and some is advice-seeking My husband and I are foster parents for a 17 year old teenage boy (I'll call him "T" ). Both my husband and T are gluten-eaters. The other day my husband dipped his cracker in our hummus. Today I found toast crumbs in our margarine after T made... -
ARCHIVED Seizures And Celiac?
JillianLindsay replied to imissfood...'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had two seizures -- one in Jan/09 and then in March/09 -- they are what helped my DR's take my medical problems seriously and led to my Dx of celiac disease. I don't know the medical details behind them and my EEG & CT were normal. No more seizures since going gluten-free It was quite scary at the time, so I'm sorry you are going through this... -
I went to a wedding a couple weeks ago and called ahead to speak to the caterer and to ask if they could provide a gluten-free option for me. I'm not nearly as sensitive as you (and my meal was bland and not very tasty), but this worked for me. It doesn't hurt to call. If, after speaking with them, you don't feel they are knowledgable enough, then...

ARCHIVED Celiac Disease Discrimination
JillianLindsay replied to KSUmarlow04's topic in Publications & Publicity
If it were me, I'd pay all my fees EXCEPT the meal plan and risk the late fee being tacked on. You have every reason to be medically exempt and this is a terrible, shameless cash-grab by Kennesaw State U. Obviously it's easy for us to shout out advice when we're not in your shoes, but we're here for moral support and good luck whatever avenue you... -
ARCHIVED Coffee.. Anxiety?
JillianLindsay replied to Blondie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Caffeine has been well-documented as contributing to anxiety symptoms. -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease Discrimination
JillianLindsay replied to KSUmarlow04's topic in Publications & Publicity
Well said Takala. Marlow, If you have a DR's note saying you cannot eat their food then you definitely have a case. PLEASE FIGHT this and DON'T give up! We are behind you 100% (as much as one can be from far away & over the internet anyway). What about the better business bureau and/or consumer protection? I don't know how it works in... -
ARCHIVED Possibly Cleiac
JillianLindsay replied to jawojtylak's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't know how it works where you live, but my understanding is that a DR cannot deny a request for a simple blood test. Regardless of whether or not s/he agrees with you, your DR should run the blood test to, at the very least, give you peace of mind. Your symptoms could be celiac disease (or could be other things). Are you able to find a new DR or... -
ARCHIVED More Food Issues Than Gluten
JillianLindsay replied to Shoshannah's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, allergy testing involves pokes either on the back or on the forearm. It's not injections with an actual needle, but they do need to poke the skin to expose the allergen and watch for a reaction. I've had it done twice (once on the back as a kid & once on the forearm as a teen). The forearm was much easier and wasn't painful at all. Definitely... -
ARCHIVED Apple Juice...anyone?
JillianLindsay replied to outthere39's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It could simply be the high acid that is contained in apple juice, orange juice, etc. I have been gluten-free for nearly a month and still can't eat tomatoes and certain acidic foods. It all depends on what kind fo reaction you are having and how long you've been healing. You could always look for a low-acid type and see if that helps Jillian -
ARCHIVED Pain After Endoscopy
JillianLindsay replied to jkr's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had a lot of belly pain after my endoscopy. They blow air into your belly to be able to see the lining of your stomach better and so your belly may feel very distended, tight and sore. It took a couple days for me to start feeling better. Going gluten-free will also help Good luck, Jillian -
ARCHIVED Does It Really Matter?
JillianLindsay replied to frogrun's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
My concern (IMHO) would be what if it's not DH. If they rule out DH then they can continue testing to make sure they take the appropriate course of treatment. If it's confirmed then you know the gluten-free diet is your treatment My internal medicine specialist said once the Dx of celiac disease is confirmed some DRs and patients tend to attribute... -
I've been experiencing serious joint pain for about 2 months now. I am wondering about glucosamine... Do you know if its use for joint health is it well-supported in scientific literature? And do you experience any side-effects from it (i.e. drowsiness, so take it at night)? I am considering giving it a try and if you could share more about your experience...

ARCHIVED Splenda
JillianLindsay replied to lemonade's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi everyone, I said I would report back after speaking to my dietitian so here I am She said that Splenda is the "safest"/best of the sweeteners because it is derived from sugar and there has been extensive research on its long-term use (10 years) and it has proven to be safe. She said yes, it does contain teensy amounts chlorine, however so does... -
ARCHIVED Help
JillianLindsay replied to April21361's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi April, My weight stayed relatively stable and I did not have any DH (skin problems), but tested positive. Everyone manifests symptoms differently. If you haven't completed all your testing and you want to seek out a definitive diagnosis, you should not change your diet until you've met with your DR and had all the tests done. If you are not eating... -

ARCHIVED What Is Going On?
JillianLindsay replied to Lori and Kieran's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm nowhere near a qualified professional and am new to this as well (3 weeks gluten-free). What came to mind for me was that in the time you had your son off gluten his digestive system may have started to heal so that when he ate gluten again his sensitivity was heightened (he could be absorbing more now that the lining of his small bowel has begun to... -
ARCHIVED Not Having A Good Day
JillianLindsay replied to Jennifer2's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Jennifer, Sorry you aren't feeling well and I can certainly relate. I have been gluten-free for 3 weeks now and it has been a roller-coaster. I felt fantastic for a few days and then was back to feeling lousy for the next few. Some have said it is gluten withdrawl ("where the heck is my bread?" symptoms). Of course, double-check all supplements... -
ARCHIVED Just Had An Endoscope
JillianLindsay replied to lisa-123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My throat hurt for about 48 hours afterwards, a good excuse to eat some gluten-free ic cream If it doesn't get better or if you're really worried, give them a call or go see your DR, but it is normal to experience a sore throat after such a procedure. Hope you get feeling better soon! -
ARCHIVED I Can't Stand The Guessing Game Anymore....please Help!
JillianLindsay replied to mom2easton&eli's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree with everyone and am sorry you and your son have had to go through this. People of every age and with varying symptoms can have false negative tests, so as much as we all desperately want a definitive answer, it is not always possible. Also, once your son is an adult (or old enough to decide for himself and buy his own groceries), he could always... -
ARCHIVED Help! On The Diet For 18 Days And Still So Fatigued
JillianLindsay replied to JillianLindsay's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thanks so much everyone for your words of encouragement It helps to know I'm not the only one that has gone (or is going) through this. I already had my blood work done in May and endoscopy in June so I am not worried about skewing any test results. I will keep searching for hidden sources of gluten and will try to be patient as my body adapts to a new...
