ARCHIVED Buttered Popcorn?
JillianLindsay replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Last time I went to the movies (first time ordering popcorn since my dx) I talked to the manager. She got out the popcorn & butter boxes and read the ingredients with me. Then she washed her hands and served me my popcorn herself It was a positive experience and I definitely did not get glutened! Most popcorns are fine, I think it's just a... -
ARCHIVED Reacting To Caffeine
JillianLindsay replied to JillianLindsay's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
So good to know that I'm not alone -- thank you! I broke down and had coffee again today. I had to be up at 6:30 all week (including today, a Sunday!) and bloody well deserved it lol. I felt a bit of fatigue and weakess, but the worst symptom this time was anxiety. Yikes, the anxiety! I used to drink anywhere from 2 to 6 cups a day and not... -
ARCHIVED Feelings Of Guilt
JillianLindsay replied to positivenrgfairy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with people telling you not to feel guilty for something you didn't choose and for looking out for your health. We shouldn't apologize for not wanting to be sick! I also completely understand the feelings you are experiencing. I went through major anxiety and guilt around food when I first went gluten-free. I still get anxiety around family dinners... -
ARCHIVED How Soon Do You See A Reaction?
JillianLindsay replied to positivenrgfairy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have a reaction if someone uses the same fork for something with gluten and then I use it. Yes, even trace amounts make celiacs sick. It's recommended that people go off gluten "cold turkey" and not slowly wean off of it becasue of the harm that even crumbs can do, although it is completely your personal choice to make, and tapering off may be better... -
ARCHIVED I Get Sick After Everything I Eat
JillianLindsay replied to kaki-clam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome to the forum & sorry you are feeling unwell. When I first started on the gluten-free diet I felt amazing for a week or so, then took a downhill dive and felt even worse than before I changed my diet! We do go through gluten withdrawal when we stop eating it and our bodies are still healing and a lot of things can make us sick, even if they are... -
ARCHIVED Alcohol
JillianLindsay replied to JANMAZ's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I love red wine If I were going for vodka, I would have a screwdriver (vodka w/ 100% pure orange juice). Vodka can go with almost anything: cranberry juice is another nice option. Enjoy whatever you decide. Cheers, Jillian -
ARCHIVED Was It Lexapro Or Gluten (cc)?
JillianLindsay replied to OliveBranch's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Lexapro is listed as gluten-free here: Open Original Shared Link but you should always call the company and/or ask your pharmacist if a medication is gluten-free before taking it (if you haven't already) Did you read the list of possible side-affects to see if GI symptoms are listed? I go to Sobey's (not sure if they have that grocery chain where... -
One glass of wine doesn't seem to bother me, but if I have more than that then I wake up feeling very tired & grumpy Guess I'll save money on wine & save myself from hangovers! Cheers, Jillian

ARCHIVED Reacting To Caffeine
JillianLindsay replied to JillianLindsay's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have a confession to make... over the long weekend (Labour Day) I went to the cottage with my in-laws. They are HUGE coffee lovers! It was sort of a resort cottage place with a restaurant. At breakfast the waiter just brought us a huge carafe of coffee instead of repeatedly coming over to refill our mugs! So, of course, I indulged and had a couple... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Feel Anxious After Eating Gluten?
JillianLindsay replied to frogrun's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I accidentally got glutened on Sunday at breakfast (restaurant) and spent the entire day reading in bed. I was exhausted, irritable/cranky, anxious, and didn't want to be around humans (lol). My fatigue and anxiety usually last for 4 days, getting a little better each day (I'm at about 80% today). Yes, anxiety has been described as being related... -
Sorry you are feeling so unwell, it's a good thing that you are returning to your DR for follow-up. Your GI should run a lactose intolerance test (highly co-morbid with celiac disease) and you can also request an allergy test. As you have only been gluten-free for a week, it is highly likely that you are still healing and it will take time to start...

ARCHIVED Talking To University Department
JillianLindsay replied to Googles's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You have every right to be angry with your school and this is a good place to vent to people who understand I too experienced a great deal of anger, frustration, upset/sadness and moodiness in general durnig the healing phase and now whenever I get glutened. It's difficult enough to deal with the everyday stresses of school and financial burdens, let... -
ARCHIVED Sad/disappointed
JillianLindsay replied to JillianLindsay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks That's exactly how I got into my GI in a reasonable time -- had to call every 2 days to see if they had my appointment yet lol -
ARCHIVED 5 Days gluten-free - Problems?
JillianLindsay replied to GeishaGirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello I've been gluten-free for 2 months and it has been a roller coaster. Even when I was 100% sure I wasn't glutened, I still experienced ocassional stomach pain, fatigue, etc. It has only been 5 days and takes some people a lot longer than that to feel the positive effects of going gluten-free. Your stomach is also probably very sensitive if you... -
Just throwing a little pity party for myself, feel free to join in! There will be a lot of whining in this post, so read at your own discretion... So, back in March I suffered a seizure and my driver's license was suspended for 6 months. I had a suspected petit mal in January but prior to that had no history of seizures and no family history of epilepsy...

ARCHIVED Endoscopy Vs. Biopsy- Do I Need Both?
JillianLindsay replied to mpgirl089's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The biopsies are taken during the endoscopy so it's really only one procedure. So yes, it's important to have them both No such thing as a dumb question -- for every person who asks a question, chances are at least 10 others were wondering the same thing. Good luck! Jillian -
I love going out to eat -- I'm a social person & am on lots of sports teams who go out for drinks/appies after games I always call ahead when going to a new restaurant to see if they can accommodate me and to explain my dietary needs. I usually ask to speak to a manager when I get there to make sure my meal will be safe. Once you develop a relationship...

ARCHIVED Intermitent Dizzyness
JillianLindsay replied to Googles's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
How's your blood pressure? I was having really bad dizzy spells before my Dx and my bp was very low. Going gluten-free has helped Also getting regular exercise, taking your vitamins and making sure you're not accidentally getting glutened will help. How long have you been on the anti-depressants? It is possible that it's a side-affect, have you... -
cc=cross contamination Some commercial hamburgers contain gluten (even without the bun) as a filler. Even if the burgers (meat only) are gluten-free there is still a very high risk of a crumb of a bun getting into your food. I make delicious burgers at home with ground beef, onions, gluten-free soy sauce (you can also use gluten-free worchestershire...

ARCHIVED Reacting To Caffeine
JillianLindsay replied to JillianLindsay's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thanks for sharing. I'm glad I'm not the only one -- misery loves company I've been doing decaf these days and am probably going to try half-caf next week when I'm back to school *fingers crossed* -- I need caffeine for my 8am classes! Good luck to all us coffee lovers Jillian -
ARCHIVED Raw Food Diet For Cats
JillianLindsay replied to Jestgar's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Oh yes, I am well aware of this It doesn't have to be unhealthy, but it's very difficult to do properly and easy to miss important nutrients. I agree that it requires doing your homework and consulting with a veterinarian. -
I don't know enough about Swin Flu to answer your first question... but there is a link between celiac disease and thyroid issues and I think your instinct is right: it doesn't hurt to get your children tested
