ARCHIVED Anyone Unemployed Or Divorced Because Of Celiac?
JillianLindsay replied to mrmachinist's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I was on sick benefits for 4 months due to ongoing celiac-related health issues and eventually had to quit the job. I had lost my license due to a seizure and the job required driving & a valid license. I have decided to return to school full-time this fall and get my honours in psych so that I can go on to grad school And I've saved $200+/month on... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Dreams
JillianLindsay replied to yogamommytrainer99's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had my first gluten dream last night! I was at a party (I think with my soccer team, most of whom have been extremely supportive since I went gluten-free on July 8/09). Someone was eating from a bag of chips and I just took a handful and started eating them! Someone asked me "you can eat those??" and I was like "omg I forgot!" I checked the ingredients... -
ARCHIVED Scared That Its Not Celiacs?
JillianLindsay replied to narcissa-bell's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was afraid it wouldn't be celiac disease! I had been sick since Dec, including fainting due to very low BP and even seizures! I went through hell with my health and with a ridiculous amount of tests. When the blood test came back positive for celiac disease I was so relieved - yes, also shocked and had no idea what it was - ...but after I got over the... -

ARCHIVED So Confused About Results/endoscopy
JillianLindsay replied to SuzyQ2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm in the exact same boat! Blood test was high-positive for two different markers (waiting for a copy so I know the details), endo was "abnormal" but not an obvious celiac case and so the DR took a lot of biopsies. I find out on August 25th the results of those biopsies as well as a lactose intolerance test and HLA typing. I went on the diet immediately... -
ARCHIVED New Here...do Test Results Mean I Have Celiac?
JillianLindsay replied to Mom2Boys's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It's a personal choice too. Some people absolutely need to know 100% for sure that they have celiac disease before embarking on the high-maintenance gluten-free diet. Others only need a positive response on the diet to motivate them to stay gluten-free Also you may want to see if your DR is willing to give you a complete Dx (diagnosis) for insurance purposes... -
ARCHIVED Colonoscopy - What To Expect?
JillianLindsay replied to alcie27's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had a sore throat and tummy after the endoscopy but it passed after 48 hours. I forgot about that awful cleansing drink! I haven't had to do it (yet!) but I heard that's the worst part of the whole thing. -
ARCHIVED Colonoscopy - What To Expect?
JillianLindsay replied to alcie27's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
When I had my endoscopy the recovery room was full of people who had just had colonoscopies and they all said "I don't remember a thing". If you're being sedated you probably won't remember it and will just feel drowsy for the rest of the day. Some people feel nauseous from sedation and/or pain control meds. I'm sure others will have more information for... -
How frustrating! Boston Pizza sponsors my soccer team and I emailed their head office to see what I could eat. Their list included french fries, wings, etc. I asked them NOT to tell other customers that these items are gluten-free but they did not take them off their gluten-free options list. I went to Moxie's and ordered off their gluten-free menu...

ARCHIVED Should I Allow Myself To Get Glutened For My Trip To France?
JillianLindsay replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Could you call the catering copany and see if they can accommodate you? Call the restaurants before you go out, just like you might at home? Even if your symptoms aren't too severe, I'm sure you are fully aware that damage is still being done. You could also shop at a nearby grocery to have some safe foods in the hotel room with you. Good luck whatever... -

ARCHIVED Taco Seasonings
JillianLindsay replied to jello5's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I was looking for one too! There's one on this website: https://www.celiac.com/articles/396/1/Taco-...Free/Page1.html I haven't tried it yet so I don't know how it tastes. You can google "gluten free taco seasoning" and you'll get lots of hits Bon apetit, Jillian -
Hi Shane, Have you gone to physio? I got stretches, massage, strengthening exercises, ultrasound and even acupuncture! I was skeptical about the acupuncture, but the combination of all the above therapies have really helped. I still have pain, but it's not as severe. During the off season between soccer and hockey I'll be working hard to strengthen...

ARCHIVED Brown Sugar Splenda

I just stumbled upon this old thread after googling "is splenda brown sugar gluten free?" My hubby and I are making gluten-free cookies tonight Did anyone get confirmation on this? Thanks! Jillian -
ARCHIVED Think I've Been Glutened, Please Check My Menu :)
JillianLindsay replied to tygwyn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Good morning Rachel, and welcome I'm a bit of a newbie too (one month gluten-free) but I noticed a couple possibilities. How clean is your BBQ grill? -- if you've cooked meats with gluten or toasted buns on the grill there could still be crumbs on it that can cross-contaminate your food -- give it a really good clean and if you have others in your... -
ARCHIVED Anxiety.. Nutrition?
JillianLindsay replied to Blondie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Not to over-simplify, but: caffeine! I cut out my daily coffee as the caffeine-crash was causing huge fatigue. The other day I had one cup of coffee and a few hours later had my first anxiety attack since going gluten-free. Exercise and sunlight help keep me feeling good and I've learned to lay off the coffee... at least for now -

ARCHIVED New Symptoms After Starting Gluten-free Diet?
JillianLindsay replied to BungalowBill's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Bill, I don't have time to read everyone's posts (off to soccer shortly) so I apologize if I am repeating anything anyone else already mentioned. You are definitely getting glutened! celiac disease means that even trace amounts of gluten ARE harmful, including crumbs in your toaster and sharing a grill with gluten-filled foods. You said you were... -
ARCHIVED New Symptoms After Starting Gluten-free Diet?
JillianLindsay replied to BungalowBill's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi and welcome! I'm newer at this than you are, so I may not be much help, but I had some ideas so I thought I'd give it a go I went through what might have been gluten withdrawal. I was so sure that I was 100% gluten-free and still feeling fatigued. Your body is still healing and getting used to a new diet so it may be an adjustment period... -
ARCHIVED Another Newbie...
JillianLindsay replied to Tabasco's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Similarily I had malabsorbtion, fatigue, weakness, etc. issues and no GI symptoms. However, it is misinformation to tell someone that if their B12 is normal then they aren't likely to have celiac disease. My B12 was "low-normal" but my iron was ridiculously low. As you said, everyone manifests differently, so not having low B12 should not rule anything... -
ARCHIVED Do You Live In A Gluten Free Or Shared Kitchen?
JillianLindsay replied to Crayons574's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Foodiegurl, I am envious of your gluten-free home and admire your committment I share my kitchen with my husband and our foster son; both eat gluten. Yesterday we went out and bought me my own frying pan, toaster, etc. so we are working towards a safer kitchen environment. Of course my husband ran out of his cheese and while making a sandwich touched... -
Hi Jocammie, I'm a 26 year old female and was just diagnosed with celiac disease a month ago. I live with my husband and our foster son, both of whom eat gluten. I'm a full time University student and work as a social worker with teens. I am a huge sports nut I've found this forum very supportive and helpful at learning about celiac disease...

After a couple of physio appointments, my knee & achilles pain seem to be tendonitis from over-use rather than related to gluten. My PT wants me to rest for 6 weeks but I only have 4 games left in my season, so I'll rest after that
-
Thanks everyone! I'm now attending Physiotherapy. X-rays were negative for arthritis *whew*, the PT thinks it's tendonitis. I now have it in both my knees and both my achilles tendons lol. It's pretty painful, but hopefully the physio will help. Only 2 weeks left in our soccer season so after that I'll do lots of strength training and rest the sore areas...
