ARCHIVED What Can I Do To Feel Better?
KaitiUSA replied to Jen H's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Reaction times for people vary. I feel really bad for a good 2 weeks and the 7th day is the absolute worst. Basically you just have to wait it out. There are some things that may help ease the symptoms but other than that there is not much to do. -
ARCHIVED Malt Diastase
KaitiUSA replied to Rachel--24's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wow, I would definitely call and complain. The company is either making a false claim or possibly through the process they put the stuff through makes it ok(kind of like through a distillation process) I don't know but I would definitely call. -
ARCHIVED Diagnosed W/ Cd -- Addl Allergy Testing?
KaitiUSA replied to Maureen73's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Celiac is NOT an allergy. This is why when you go to an allergist they will not be able to test you for celiac by allergy testing. Celiac has it's own separate panel that needs to be done. For allergy testing find an allergist to do those kinds of tests. Also, places like York labs do testing. The problem is there are many false positives or false negatives... -
ARCHIVED Living Without--newest Issue
KaitiUSA replied to celiac3270's topic in Publications & Publicity
The analogy was about what I had done a few months back: My friends brought a pizza over and wanted to scrape the cheese off of the bread so I could have it and when I told them that I could not and why they didn't seem to get it. So I got out some cleaner and poured kitchen cleaner all over the pizza then scraped the cleaner off as best as I could and... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed - Another Question
KaitiUSA replied to AmandaD's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Some people may see a difference that quick but I have not found many who feel better so quick. Don't expect to feel better so soon but if you do then count your blessings. -
ARCHIVED Living Without--newest Issue
KaitiUSA replied to celiac3270's topic in Publications & Publicity
I hear you, celiac3270. That's definitely detrimental to the newbies to celiac. I'm not as concerned about experienced celiacs reading it because they would know the inaccuracies in it. -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed - Another Question
KaitiUSA replied to AmandaD's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You should definitely not be worried about a misdiagnosis in that case. She clearly has celiac. And a colonoscopy would not be to detect celiac...those are done to detect other things but not celiac. -
ARCHIVED Am I Alone
KaitiUSA replied to Danijela's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Fear and anxiety are common symptoms with celiac. I had anxiety alot...that was one of my worst symptoms. -
ARCHIVED Maybe I'm Not Celiac After All...
KaitiUSA replied to musikate's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It takes longer sometimes. I did not feel alot better for 3 months and was not normal for about 8 months. I would believe the blood test...tTG is a very accurate test and biopsies can rule celiac in but not out because they can easily miss damage. Have you changed lipsticks and other cosmetics, shampoos, soaps, lotions, etc? Make sure all of that is... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed - Another Question
KaitiUSA replied to AmandaD's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep, all the villi get back to normal again in almost all cases. Very rarely people have refractory celiac disease where there is irreversible damage. Damage does take time to heal though...people can see improvement quick but for some it takes longer. -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed - Another Question
KaitiUSA replied to AmandaD's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Everyone varies with time it takes to feel better. I felt alot better after 3 months but was not back to normal until about 8 months. Some people feel better really soon after being gluten free and with others it takes longer. It depends on the amount of damage done and other factors. Don't expect immediate results though because your body needs time to heal... -
ARCHIVED I'm Getting Recalled!
KaitiUSA replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It probably would come back negative but there is a chance it could come back positive. It depends how high your results would have been and how much the gluten free diet brought the # down. -
Sounds like gluten is an issue for you. I had the same problem as you at first. There was a lot of crappy tasting gluten free stuff and I was like o great I am going to have to eat this my whole life. After a while, you will learn there are alot of good gluten free brands that are good it is just a matter of finding them. This site will definitely help...

ARCHIVED I'm Getting Recalled!
KaitiUSA replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Eating gluten before testing if you have been gluten free is not enough. For testing you need to be eating about equal to 3 pieces of bread a day for 3 months. Maybe they just need more blood for the testing or maybe something came back abnormal and they are testing you for other things. -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Pretzels
KaitiUSA replied to DuckyDiva's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well if that guy had celiac then Lord help him because he needs major help with all the damage he is probably doing to himself. That kind of thing can really damage us and I would definitely complain about that. -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Pretzels
KaitiUSA replied to DuckyDiva's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Spelt is a form of wheat and is NOT gluten free. If spelt is in it then that person misinformed you(which is common) Ener-G pretzels which are covered in sesame seeds are soo good. -
ARCHIVED Anyone In Md Or East Coast?
KaitiUSA replied to KaitiUSA's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Yeah, I know where you are talking about..I always go to Starbucks before or after I go see a movie there. It's one of the Westview theaters...very nice theater there in my opinion...probably because it was built not too long ago. Your work is not too far away from me...I told you more in the PM I sent you though. -
ARCHIVED Anyone In Md Or East Coast?
KaitiUSA replied to KaitiUSA's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I live near the Frederick area. And we have plenty of civilization there...let me tell you probably too much of it lol. I have to admit they have some pretty good places to shop though-that is if you can get to the places through the traffic. They have a really nice movie theater up there that is kind of new...I'm not sure which one you are going to because... -
ARCHIVED Symptoms
KaitiUSA replied to Rachel--24's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Swelling is a sign of an actual allergy and that can be serious so don't mess around with that at all. I have an allergy to wheat in addition to celiac and that sounds very familiar...a few times I had to go to the ER because I felt like I could not breathe. BabySnooks- in regards to the products to be gluten free..it's not a concern about being absorbed... -
ARCHIVED Have I Finally Found An Answer?
KaitiUSA replied to new1234's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the board...you will find this is a great place for info and support. Here are some answers to the questions you had: 1. I did not have sinus problems but that can be a symptom, everyone is different with symptoms and some don't even get any 2. If you get tested you need to go back on gluten for at least 3 months and eat about equal to 3 pieces... -
Here are some off the top of my head: The whole Bare Escentuals makeup line is gluten free. Burt's Bees-blushes, concealing creme, facial powder, eye shadows, eye liners, lip gloss, lipstick, lip pencils, and lip shimmers are all gluten free...they have many other gluten free products too. CoverGirl Continuous Color lipstick is gluten free. Some...

Welcome to the board. It is very easy to manage as long as you are 100% gluten free...if you stay gluten free you are good to go. You have to be extremely careful. It may seem a bit overwhelming at first because gluten is hidden under so much but then you'll see how much we can still have and good substitutes for the stuff we now can't have. If you need any...

Yea, it will all seem like a normal part of life to you. You will know what to look for and everything and there will be accidents along the way but you will learn from them. Make sure your husband knows he can't just go kissing you after he has gluten because thats a way for you to get contaminated.
-
I forgot to add: The slightest bit of gluten can cause damage so it is extremely important to be 100% gluten free and very careful about handling anything that contains gluten. It has been said that the slightest amount of gluten as frequent as once a month is just like not following the diet because of the damage that doesn't heal due to exposure of...

You most definitely need to be concerned about cross contamination. I mean like say your family continues to eat gluten and you make them dinner, well you need to wash your hands before going back to yours, use different utensils and so forth. You need your own toaster, wooden and teflon things you need to get new ones for you as well. You will need...
