  1. I did search through old threads, but only found a few half ideas. I like to have Lara bars handy, but I would also like to try to make some of my own. Has anyone had good success, and if so, how? I assume I would need a food processor. If so, can anyone recommend one? We only have a blender in the house, but I tried to blend raisins and flaxseeds...
  2. I don't know about elsewhere, but we haven't seen pumpkin pack in NE Ohio since the holidays. A store employee told me it had to do with a recall. My favorite handy dessert was making sheet cake from a pumpkin roll recipe, topping with the cream cheese frosting, then freezing individual pieces. They freeze great and even taste better eaten chilled. The...
  3. VERY coincidentally, I'm multitasking and currently listening to an educational health seminar while checking this discussion thread (we get a discount on our health insurance if we listen to these things every month - it's thru my husband's employer). This month's topic is the importance of eating breakfast. We hear all the time that people who eat breakfast...
  4. You gather up some serenity and accept that she is something you cannot change. You did have the courage to tackle the very difficult gluten-free diet, and you've educated others more than your energy required. Now you apply your wisdom to know the difference between what you can change and what you cannot - and you can't change her. Just smile and say...
  5. A week after I moved my grandmother into an assisted living facility I had a sudden onset of GI symptoms that led to weight loss, fatigue and night sweats. My PCP thinks I picked up giardia, and intenstinal parasite, at the facility. The medication she gave me wiped out half the symptoms, but not all of them, so she referred me to a GI doctor who diagnosed...
  6. From what I understand, the genetic test would only say if you carry the genes that make it possible for you to have celiac disease - it doesn't show that you do have, or will in the future have, celiac's. The only definite thing about the genetic testing is if it comes back negative - then that means you don't have what it takes genetically to get celiac...
  7. Call some local chiropractors and ask if they know of a good naturopath in your area.
  8. Poor concentration can be a symptom of anxiety. Could you have had poor concentration this whole time, but now that those more severe anxiety symptoms (above) have decreased, you're noticing the difficulty concentrating more? Just a thought. It never hurts to also try anxiety management techniques that include exercise, relaxation, stretching, massage,...
  9. I'm sure a lot of people on this site often ask for copies of their labwork, but I definately think everyone should every time. I was having a lot of symptoms of fatigue, dry hair, getting cold. So I asked my doctor to check for anemia, vit D deficiency, my thyroid, and anything else she thought appropriate. They called the results to me and said everything...

    ARCHIVED What Now?

Don't assume that stomach problems are to be expected when you travel outside the country. You said you're feeling 'like you used to' - so that sounds more like aggravated celiac's rather than just 'traveler's distress' - and that's not good. Is it really worth it to be there?
  11. You're definately allowed to have pity parties every once in a while. This diet is sooo good for us, but it also stinks a lot at times. It's okay to let yourself feel bad for a few minutes, then pick a mantra that works for you. There's an African mantro 'So be it'. I have celiac's disease, but there's nothing I can do to undo the fact I have it, so be...
  12. I've known two people who went through surgery - both with flying colors. This may sound terrible - but if you could choose a cancer, doctors say thyroid cancer is one to choose. And one friend was soooo worried about a scar - but the doctor hid it in the natural wrinkle of her neck. Big thing: check with the hospital kitchen ahead of time about if they...
  13. OCD has more of a hereditary link than general anxiety and depression (there's also a link between OCD and tourette's in families) - in other words, if you have true OCD you were born with it. Celiac's could probably worsen OCD, but not cause it. SSRI's generally are the best treatment for OCD. Counseling techniques and self-help don't hold a candle...
  14. Most research points to bipolar being an inherited condition - not 'caused' by anything else including celiac's. (It's not terribly common, yet if one identical twin has bipolar there's a 70% chance the other twin has it. Even though a person is born with bipolar, it usually manifests in late teens or early adulthood.) However celiac disease can cause...
  15. I have a 1992 Merck Manual (yes, I need to get a newer one) - and I was curious so I looked up Celiac Sprue, and in there it said the incidence in N. America is only 1 out of every 5000 persons. 1992 is not all that long ago, so we can definately understand why there is such ignorance in the medical community (I mean that in an 'unaware' kind of way, not...
  16. For the record - I'm not a paranoid person (well, maybe now I am...) I went to a Wendy's today and asked the girl at the register if the french fries are cooked in a fryer that only cooks french fries. At first she said yes, then she paused and said: 'Well, we're not SUPPOSED to put anything else in those two fryers except french fries, but sometimes...
  17. Current thought is that celiac disease can be present from childhood or triggered later in life - more commonly in a person's 30s or 40s - from an infection, surgery, childbirth, etc. There are other diseases that are inherited but often don't manifest until later in life, such as Multiple Sclerosis and schizophrenia. My celiac's didn't manifest until...
  18. I'd say ask your doctor what to do - not us (no offense to us...). I'd hate for you to be pregnant and continuing to take the pill.
  19. My glutened symptoms are GI symptoms. But when I have MSG I get a headache and sometimes nausea.
  20. Hey, Peace41, sorry your 'y' and 'o' are broken. I think I have an old keyboard lying around - do you want it?
  21. Oh, and I meant to add: A million years ago I worked at Wendy's. We would keep several burgers cooking on the fryer at a time, in anticipation of a customer ordering a burger. If a burger cooked too long it would be immediately refrigerated to use in the next batch of chili. Those burgers never touched a bun. I wouldn't call that 'old' burgers - I myself...
  22. Hi Sandsurfgirl. When I first went gluten free my hightly esteemed and celiac nutritionist told me that McDonald fries were okay, but then I checked their website and read what you read and freaked. That same exact month those fries were on the cover of a gluten magazine saying they've been tested as gluten-free and very safe. I read through old posts...
  23. Do fritos have MSG? Do you also react to MSG? Some gluten-free chips unfortunatly have MSG - like the staxx and doritos, but I'm not sure if fritos do.
  24. May sound weird, but what about coconut flakes?
  25. Are we going to start a poll to see how many people have a longer ring finger than middle finger - which supposedly is an inherited trait that used to be tied to lycanthropy (werewolfism)? Anyway - I intially voted that my pinkie reached the joint, but that was my right hand. My left pinkie is below the joint - so I voted again. I have celiac's.
