ARCHIVED Glutenized By Stepson
StacyA replied to kyle1957's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
As a therapist, I agree. Tell the therapist you're not sure, and you don't want him/her telling your stepson of your suspicions. Whether he's doing it or not, the fact that you suspect he's doing it means your family would definately benefit from some counseling. -
ARCHIVED I'M Cold, My Hands Fall Asleep, My Hair Is Dry...

We can store vitamin D, but not for too long. Should you take D again? I see you're out west - do you get enough sun? Sunscreen and windows filter out what we need. I happened to get a full-spectrum lamp to show to some clients, and I used it myself every morning for a week and I felt an improvement in my energy - the rest of the symptoms are there... -
ARCHIVED Fast Food
StacyA replied to DonaldandAlanda Evans's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've had chili and baked potatoes at several different Wendy's and was okay. I'd suspect their fries for your symptoms. Their own website doesn't list their fries as a gluten-free option (Open Original Shared Link) because of the whole fryer thing. -
If you do research and you know more than the doctor, it's okay to make that known, but not in a rude way. I remember reading in several reputable places that celiac's typically manifests itself in childhood or in a person's 30's/40's - usually with a triggering event (parasite, childbirth, injury, etc). So it would be fair to say to that doctor or the...

ARCHIVED Reynold'S Foil Muffin 'Papers' - No Muffin Pan Needed
StacyA posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I recently tried some of the large Reynold's foil muffin papers, although since they're not paper I'm not sure what they're called - but you don't need to use a muffin pan - they stand up by themselves on a cookie sheet - which is great because all my muffin pans have old residue that I would never trust, even if I have papers, because the muffin tops spill... -
ARCHIVED I'M Cold, My Hands Fall Asleep, My Hair Is Dry...
StacyA posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Unlike a lot of people on this site, I wasn't sick for years or decades. My celiac disease appears to have been triggered this summer with a parasite. I had a sudden and dramatic onset of symptoms: night sweats, reduction in menstruation, diahrrea, fatigue, brain fog... (I read that onset between the ages of 30 and 40 is common.) I was diagnosed within... -
I know a lady that tried Savella for her fibro and LOVED it.

My celiac's wasn't triggered until this summer. Before then I had 'typical' periods (pain, heavy bleeding at first then tapering off). This summer I suddenly had VERY light periods with no pain. I didn't connect that to my also sudden diahrrea and other 'classic' celiac symptoms. (I figured I was starting into menopause). It took 4 months to get diagnosed...

ARCHIVED Celiacs Get Paid $500 For A Plasma Donation
StacyA replied to Edo's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Your condition may not be severe enough to warrant this, but under the Family and Medical Leave Act, if someone's medical condition is so bad at times that they need cared for by their spouse, their spouse could turn in paperwork to their employer that protects them a little bit. Again, you may not be eligible. Your physician would need to fill out paperwork... -
ARCHIVED Equate Weight Loss Shakes - (Walmart Brand Of Slim Fast)
StacyA posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I found some 'Equate' brand shakes, in the cans, that said 'Does Not Contain Gluten'. I tried a chocolate one this morning and am definately having gluten symptoms. I can't trace my symptoms to anything else - so I'm wondering if they are the culprit - possibly through factory cc. Anyone else have these and react, or not react? I tried to search for... -
ARCHIVED Walmart Gv Frozen Veggies May Contain Traces Of Wheat!
StacyA replied to momofk&n's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think it's just a CYA from the supplier, since WalMart makes their suppliers disclose that kind of stuff. It's nice of WalMart, but then gets annoying when suppliers slap on a CYA disclaimer like that. I buy and eat their plain frozen veggies just fine. -
ARCHIVED Swedish Fish?
StacyA replied to Gorlo77's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I eat sour patch kids all the time as well - same company - no problems. -
ARCHIVED Confused About Msg
StacyA replied to Shess0816's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Trust whatever Richard says. MSG doesn't have gluten. However MSG may bother you for reasons other than gluten. I have a reaction to MSG, but those symptoms are different from my 'glutened' symptoms. -
ARCHIVED Disability ?
StacyA replied to beksmom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thanks Lyn. I don't work in HR, I'm a therapist with my degree in social work, so I've had to become familiar with these kinds of services over the years. There's a lot of help out there that doesn't get advertised enough. - Stacy -
ARCHIVED Fish Oil Supplements 'Beat Psychotic Mental Illness'
StacyA replied to GFinDC's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
81 people isn't a very good sample size. Most research surrounding schizophrenia points to it being hereditary - particularly twin studies. Therefore changing a person's diet really wouldn't reduce a person's chances of actually having schizophrenia, however the omega-3 may reduce the symptoms. (Which is what the medications do, as well.) There is some... -
ARCHIVED Anybody Out There A Morbidly Obese Celiac?
StacyA replied to ts1986's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm not sure why I clicked on this thread - I'm not heavy or skinny. But I'm glad I entered here so I could pass on this: the nutritionist I saw after I was diagnosed admitted that she, after she was diagnosed with celiac's, gained A LOT of weight after going gluten-free because she relied too much on processed gluten-free baked goods - such as cookies and... -
ARCHIVED Its That Time Again...Sales Meeting
StacyA replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had a company dinner that I was NOT looking forward to, but I called ahead, and ordered a naked steak and baked potato and it was good and I felt okay afterwards. There is life after gluten-free. -
Yes, it does get better. If you've been sick a long time, it may take awhile to feel better - but it's worth it. Otherwise, if you eat gluten, you'll continue the damage. Eating gluten-free is hard and it stinks - but intestinal damage and your body attacking itself is a really bad thing. I wasn't sick for years and years. My celiac's was only triggered...

ARCHIVED New Celiac In Need Of Advice!
StacyA replied to GFLindsey's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Peter. That list for companies that disclose gluten is 3 years old. Do you know of a good, updated one? - Stacy -
ARCHIVED Cheap Work Lunch Ideas?
StacyA replied to katinagj's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Ditto on Tarnalberry's advice - you don't want to be gluten-free before bloodwork or biopsy. I'll have a marathon cooking weekend and freeze a lot of lunches. I also keep a few safe Progresso soup cans in my drawer at my office and I have a large coffee mug I use to microwave the soup, and I always have juice boxes and Lara Bars and V-8s and Sour Patch... -
ARCHIVED Disability ?
StacyA replied to beksmom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Debbie: Since you don't know what kind of healing you'll have yet, federal social security is probably not an option - it's for permanent disability and you don't know what is permanent and what isn't yet. I'd seek more state assistance, which would be through your county Job and Family Services. Sit down with a caseworker and lay it all out on the line... -
ARCHIVED Disability ?
StacyA replied to beksmom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Although celiac's may be the cause of your problems, it sounds like the osteopenia and osteoporosis (among other things) cause your pain and compromise your ability to work. If you see an orthopedic or pain management physician for those conditions, ask them how they would fill out paperwork from Social Security asking if, in their opinion, you can work... -
ARCHIVED Disability ?
StacyA replied to beksmom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Your question is a little vague. Do you mean disabled to the point you get federal Social Security every month? If so, then you would need to prove that, at least for an entire year (not 6 or 9 months), you can't work any job at all - not just your current or recent job. For example, if you're a bank teller and you can't stand for 8 hours - but you could... -
ARCHIVED Wal-mart Great Value Brand
StacyA replied to thack's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I now need to amend a post I made above stating I haven't reacted to the pizza sauce. I've had it a few more times and I think I may have had some mild symptoms. Nothing major. (I'm still keeping a log of any processed foods so I can find culprits.) 'Naturally Gluten-Free' means that mother nature didn't include any gluten in the raw foods the sauce... -
ARCHIVED Fun Size Snickers
StacyA posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I bought a bunch of Mars candy bars on sale right after Halloween because I remember reading multiple old threads that mini and fun size Mars candy bars, such as snickers, are justs as gluten-free in mini size as they are in larger size. (I think I had gotten glutened by mini almond joys in the past.) Even Richard had contributed to one of the threads and...
