  1. I'm totally feeling your pain - literally. My mother supposedly cooked gluten-free - wouldn't let me bring a thing to Christmas dinner - and within 2 hours I knew I had experienced my first full glutening since I went gluten-free for good in September. Sigh. Bloating, back and abdominal pain, gas, even itchy eyes (I didn't realize that could even be related...
  2. A lot of us in the mental health field subscribe to the continuum theory - and whenever I'm training people on diagnosing depression, anxiety, ADHD, OCD, etc I draw a continuum and say that the only diagnosis I know of that is black and white is pregnancy - nearly everything else falls somewhere on a continuum. Granted, there may be a line that gets...
  3. I'd suggest getting two different spoon rests: one for you and one for her, so you don't use the wrong spoon or rest your spoon in a puddle of gluten. Ditto on the other suggestions. You do need to watch the microwave. My first week of having to go gluten-free my husband microwaved some BBQ wings for my son and I noticed the splatters in the ceiling...
  4. My celiac's wasn't triggered/'woken up' until this summer, when I had an intestinal parasite. I had the GI symptoms and night sweats and reported those to my doctor - who then referred me to a specialist. I also had the lightest periods in my life this summer, but I just thought I was starting menopause and didn't even bother to mention those symptoms to...
  5. I also think you need to get a new doctor. You're not going to trust that doctor anymore, anyway - so you may as well switch.
  6. My GI (with some good celiac experience) said everything looked okay visually, but the biopsy results came back with mild villous blunting.
  7. A regular routine of exercise and sunlight may also help. Exercise builds energy - although at first it feels like a catch-22 because you don't have the energy to exercise. If you don't get natural light, consider checking into a full-spectrum light (you need to find the actual phrase 'full spectrum') - you can get a cheap $14 bulb you put in a light and...

    ARCHIVED Chocolate?

Hershey's syrup is okay according to Hershey's and multiple posts I've seen on this site.
  9. I'm certain I got glutened at my mother's. She's trying to cook gluten-free for me, and I appreciate her efforts, but within 2 hours I was feeling the symptoms that I think are my personal glutened symptoms (I'm only a few months into the dx and gluten-free diet): low back pain, abdominal discomfort, bloating and gas. If my estimates are correct, pretty...
  10. Thanks Peter and Richard! Happy Holidays. - Stacy
  11. The only questionable ingredient is 'natural flavoring'. I'm not too worried, but you never know...
  12. I should have gone to a different store, but Giant Eagle is so close and I was already right in town taking my son to wrestling practice... Anyway, I bought a bunch of Giant Eagle brand egg nog, knowing that they don't label well and don't have info on their website and their nutritionist takes 3 days to email back an answer on if something is gluten-free...
  13. Hi Cecily. Over a hundred people have viewed your post, but no one has replied. I think it may be because you're asking such a global question, and because you're in the 'products' section. I'm new to gluten-free, so I don't know all that much, but I wanted you to have someone reply. 6 days is very early into gluten-free, and if you've been sick a whole...
  14. I'd suggest starting at WalMart and taking a cell phone so you can call companies if you need to. WalMart makes their 'Great Value' generic suppliers clearly list gluten. At first when you have to shop gluten-free it's so confusing you start to doubt every product, so it's nice to pick up a package of generic WalMart cream cheese and see right on the label...
  15. I bought the Planters '100% Natural Harvest' almonds at either Giant Eagle or WalMart - I don't shop at fancy expensive places...
  16. I recently bought and have eaten Planters '100% Natural Harvest' almonds. The ingredients are almonds and sea salt. Their disclaimer is 'manufactured on equipment that processes peanut, other tree nuts.' That's it. Planters is a Kraft company - and Kraft reportedly always discloses gluten sources. I have noticed a lot of other nut labels that say 'may...
  17. I also think that means that the ingredients themselves don't have gluten, but during processing there could be cross-contamination. Sometimes that's CYA, sometimes it's a valid concern. I've had Great Value pizza sauce twice in the last month with no problems, but that's not a guarantee.
  18. I bought a bunch of cheap tupperware and I do a lot more cooking with naturally gluten-free foods and freeze meals for myself. I take them to work (I set them in the fridge to thaw the night before)or have them on standby for a quick microwave. Meals that are easy to cook and the ingredients are naturally gluten free (except you have to use cornstarch...
  19. When I first went gluten-free this summer, I was able to use the powdered Carnation Instant Breakfast (now called 'Breakfast Essentials') every single morning. However the last time I bought a new container I noticed after a week that I had what I think are my glutened symptoms (back pain, irritability). The Carnation website says all powders (except 'malt...
  20. Don't associate 'social worker' with Children Services - it's a common misconception. Even if a social worker isn't familiar with celiac's, the social worker may be able to at least help with behavior modification, stress management for the parent, etc. Once the mood swing is set in motion, what started the mood swing (gluten or casien or whatever)...
  21. Lonewolf - Make sure you're watching your mercury intake, however, with the fish and the cod liver oil. Some symptoms of mercury poisoning look like celiac's.
  22. Jean'sBrainonGluten wrote: "lots of meats have vegetable broth added for 'flavor' and that can have gluten." I just found this out!! I thought I was doing so well doing my own cooking with plain old ingredients like meat and veggies and potatoes. Then I read something that made me realize I need to read the labels for meat, so next time I was at the...
  23. I finally got the direct email of the Giant Eagle nutritionist who can answer questions - the problem is it can take several days for her to email back. (If you call the toll-free number on the product, all the person on the phone does is email the same nutritionist and tell you she'll call you within 3 days with an answer. Not great when you're making...
  24. I know, it sounds like a silly or naive or dangerous question - and I'm not necessarily planning this - but I was thinking about this concept. If celiac's is the body's ill-advised autoimmune reaction to even the smallest amount of gluten, and the symptoms are because of the antigens not the gluten - then if I know I got cc'ed, what would be wrong with...
  25. The Betty Crocker brownies also freeze well (I freeze and hide a few just for me - forget my husband and boys!)
