Whether it's safe or not, I haven't found the gluten-free menu at Olive Garden very appetizing. Pretty dry. And for me it's depressing seeing all the pasta dishes walking past me. I ate at Olive Garden the night before my biopsy - a going out with a bang kind of thing. A month later we went there to try the gluten-free options and afterwards I told my...

I have to go there for a function. I emailed them asking if they have any gluten-free options but got no response yet, and there's nothing about gluten-free options on their website (of course) and nothing comes up when I googled them in this site and out in the worldwideweb(it's a small chain). So I was wondering if any locals have eaten there and what...

ARCHIVED How Do I Get My College To Release Me From The Meal Plan?
StacyA replied to AKcollegestudent's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Their definition of 'prove it' is probably not as strict as you are worrying about. Just get something in writing like the other people here suggested. The college just needs to have something written down so they can't be accused by other parents/students of showing you preferential treatment. -
I'm sure this question has been addressed, but when I searched I only came up with info about gluten-free toothpastes (I use either Crest or Colgate, because I think I saw they are both always gluten-free). I have a shared household. My 9 year old is starting to use the 'grown-up' toothpaste, and I've been wondering if anyone's ever been cc-ed that way...

ARCHIVED Paula Dean's Pumpkin Bars
StacyA replied to wowzer's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I did a search and found this recipe - THANKS! It was excellent! I assumed the second 'baking powder' was really supposed to be 'baking soda'. And I didn't have any half and half but I did have some plain yogurt. I may have used a pan that was too small - because it turned out like cake rather than like bars - but they were still moist and yummy. I... -
ARCHIVED How To Help A 21 Year Old Son
StacyA replied to lizbeth's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Could stress or depression be factors? College is stressful, and this diagnosis can be depressing. D can be part of stress/anxiety. Apathy or poor motivation can be part of depression. The counseling center on campus probably offers free counseling to students, and if you suggest it just as a way to talk about his celiac's and the stress/adjustment associated... -
I wanted to vote/give points to Janet's (Darn210) post explaining how to change my settings so I can see all the posts in a tread (under a post with a title asking how to expand threads or something) - because it helped and made me sooo happy, but when I clicked on the little green plus sign, it said I reached my quota of positive votes. I've never voted...

ARCHIVED Is There Any Way To Expand All Posts In A Topic?
StacyA replied to chumley's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Thank you soooo much Janet!! I would never have known, and I'm decent at navigating web stuff. I was ready to start clicking everywhere, but I was afraid I would end up accidentally reporting someone or something... It's funny - if it's 'Standard' - how come it wasn't the default? It shouldn't be called 'Standard' then, right...? -
ARCHIVED Is There Any Way To Expand All Posts In A Topic?
StacyA replied to chumley's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
I don't see any 'options' button. There used to be one under the old format. I also prefer to see all the posts in a thread at one time. I can see them now that I hit 'reply' - they are at the bottom of my screen in 'summary' format, but I can't seem to get to there without replying. Edit/Update: see DARN210's directions. They worked! -
ARCHIVED Baking / Teachers And School

I believe the whole - 'you attract more flies with honey than vinegar' - plus you never want to make enemies in your kids' school - but you also need to advocate for your kid. My fear is this: if the teacher keeps crabbing to you about it, does that also mean she's making snide or pouting remarks to your daughter? THAT would not be cool. You're daughter... -
ARCHIVED Pizza Parties At School
StacyA replied to NewGFMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
That's a good idea!! Kids do, however, like eating somewhere other than the cafeteria as a treat - so could they pair up with another class and both classes eat in the other classroom if there's space - the kids may like seeing some of their playground buddies, and the teachers may like spending a little time with another grown-up. Or eat in the music room... -
I knew nothing about celiac's disease before I was diagnosed, so I'm not expecting the whole world to know about gluten-free living now that I have to be gluten-free. But shouldn't people in the food service industry start getting a little more enlightened? My husband made reservations at the Hard Rock Cafe for their New Year's Eve celebration. I knew...

ARCHIVED How Immediate Is Adverse Reaction When Mistakenly "glutened"?
StacyA replied to KRP78's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I just got cross contaminated AGAIN yesterday. I accidentally used a spatula for my food that my husband was using in a pan of gluteny perogies for my boys. I tried to scrape away anything the spatula touched. I felt a little queasy while I was eating, but it may have been nerves because I was aware of the cc possibility. I only ate 7 bites. 2 hours... -
ARCHIVED How Immediate Is Adverse Reaction When Mistakenly "glutened"?
StacyA replied to KRP78's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Can I assume that it generally takes a few hours because the autoimmune response begins in the intestines, not the stomach? After all, it takes a little while for the food to make it down there... (I'm still learning this stuff). - Stacy -
ARCHIVED Difference Between Seizures & Panic/anxiety Attacks
StacyA replied to Swimmr's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
True panic attacks are physiological symptoms, like what you describe, plus cognitive/emotional symptoms: a sense of doom, fear, you feel like you HAVE to escape, you feel like you may die or go crazy or your legs will collapse, etc. One thing to consider: panic attacks aren't necessarily 'just in your head' - there's some correlation between panic attacks... -
ARCHIVED Feeling Sick But Still Hungry
StacyA replied to gointribal's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Keep a journal of what you eat and what your symptoms are (even rating them based on a 1-10 scale), and maybe seeing it on paper will help you not only find a pattern but also discourage 'cheating'. -
ARCHIVED Suggestions On Handling Family Holidays?
StacyA replied to waitingdorothea's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Eat first AND take a dish or two that you can eat. And no, I don't blame you for being paranoid about other people cooking. Right now I have a shared kitchen and I'm even paranoid when I cook! My sister-in-law is very smart, and she thought my vegetarian husband would eat pepperoni ('that's not meat, is it?'). She also very nicely made me gluten-free... -
ARCHIVED New Here! Help With Questions Please :)
StacyA replied to Moocheck's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've only been gluten-free a few months as well. On Christmas I had my first full-fledged glutening - at least as far as I know based on the symptoms - and the symptoms started showing up about 2 hours after the meal (bloating, then pain, then gas) and worsened to a peak of more intense discomfort 4 hours after the meal. The next day I was very tired. ... -
ARCHIVED Betty Crocker Mix-help!
StacyA replied to jlbroyles23's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I don't know much about baking, or ways to keep the muffin or cookie from getting hard, but I'd suggest semi-sweet chocolate chips - because they, at least, won't get hard. This is from a Toll House baking book I have - where nearly all the recipes call for semi-sweet morsels (chips): "Don't use milk chocolate morsels in baked desserts that do not call... -
ARCHIVED Land'o'lakes Website With Recipes And gluten-free Tips
StacyA replied to StacyA's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Here's an email reply I got today (Dec 31, 2009) about their hot cocoa. I'll probably try it and track for any reaction: "To date, the FDA and USDA have not defined the term "gluten free." LAND O LAKES -
ARCHIVED Land'o'lakes Website With Recipes And gluten-free Tips
StacyA replied to StacyA's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Have you made them? I haven't tried making gluten-free baked goods yet, and I think I've been a little scared. I used to bake a lot (before gluten-free). I don't know if it's because those flour mixes look so complicated (I have probably 5 varieties and some xatham gum in my freezer) or because I'm afraid of what the end results will taste like (I... -
ARCHIVED Sugardale Meats
StacyA posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I know Sugardale has been mentioned here before, but I was very happy when I went to the main website: www.sugardalefoods.com and right on the home page is a tab that says 'Gluten Information'. Wow. Usually you have to search and click a ton of times with your mouse. This was only one click away from the home page! I don't know, however, how far out... -
ARCHIVED Land'o'lakes Website With Recipes And gluten-free Tips
StacyA posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I wanted to see if some old hot chocolate packets I have are gluten-free, so I went to the Land'O'Lakes website and was surprised to find a bunch of gluten-free baking recipes. (I'm not sure how far Land'O'Lakes products are distributed, but you all can access this website anywhere.) Open Original Shared Link I still need to find out for sure about... -
ARCHIVED Roasted Nut Crunch Bars
StacyA replied to lpellegr's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm resurrecting this thread to ask if anyone has had a reaction to these bars. I just started a food diary because I think I've had some cc issues with some processed foods, and these bars are on my questionable list. I just emailed Nature Valley this month (Dec. 09) to ask if they're made on shared equipment. I got a canned response via email...
