  1. When a company says that they don't 'hide' gluten - such as Kraft or ConAgra or Progresso - how is it listed on the label? Is the actual word 'barley', 'oat', 'rye' written, and if so, where? Is it written within the ingredients list or afterwards in bold with the required allergens? I've tried to find examples on labels in the grocery store of ways that...
  2. Blood in stool is not okay, so just do whatever tests the doctor says until you have an answer. If you don't have cancer, wouldn't you want to know for sure now that the word 'cancer' has been said? If you do have cancer, wouldn't you want to know because the earlier you treat the better?
  3. Hi. I responded similarly to a post in the pre-diagnosis forum regarding how long until panic attacks clear up. And just like Panic Disorder, some forms of depression can continue on in a self-feeding cycle even if the original cause of the depression isn't present anymore. The depression may now be feeding off itself instead of feeding off the gluten...
  4. Susan - have you had your biopsy yet? My labs were high and my GI doc said to go gluten-free, but after 3 weeks of gluten-free I decided I wanted the biopsy to be absolutely sure - so I went back on gluten for 3 weeks and had my biopsy today. My doc said everything looked okay to the naked eye, but we're waiting for the pathologist to look. I'm worried...
  5. To add to my previous post - some employers have an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for employees and spouses, and 4-6 counseling sessions are provided for FREE and names aren't given to employers of who uses the service. The HR or personnel office/website of the employer would have info if there is an EAP.
  6. Panic Disorder is one of those things that, once it starts, it can feed on itself - even if the orginal cause or contributing factors are gone. Someone could have way too much caffeine one day and be in a meeting, have a panic attack, say to themselves: 'Omigosh that was AWFUL, what if it happens again, what if it happens at the store or at work again, I...
  7. Even though you have celiac's disease - not every symptom in your life will be related to exposure to gluten. If someone has 'the worst pain of their life', then the ER is called for. Someone with diabetes can still have a stroke, someone with asthma can still have a heart attack, and someone with celiac's can still have a bowel obstruction or kidney stone...
  8. I have a biopsy in two weeks, so I'm using this time of eating gluten as 'aversion therapy'. If you want, you can submit requests (a gluten food you've been feeling nostalgic about) and I can try to fit it in and then post about how ill it made me - that way you can vicariously reap the benefits of my aversion therapy. I've only had celiac symptoms for...
  9. I've read archived and recent posts here and a book that talked about saunas and pineapple and exercise and drinking a lot of water to 'flush' the gluten out. To the seasoned people: do those things work?
  10. I understand the oats concern about possible cross contamination in the field and processing plants, but why isn't this a concern with soy? We have a few acres that a farmer uses for crops. Over the winter he had winter wheat growing, and this summer he has soybeans growing. I know there are times part of the previous crop pops up ('volunteers') - so I...
  11. Just great. I don't think I had celiac's until 2-3 months ago, when an intestinal parasite triggered it - so I was certain my recent bloating would go away with my brand-new gluten-free diet. Now it sounds like I need to put my hipster pants away for a looooong time! Glad my husband's belly is bigger than mine (at least for now - knock on wood) - so he...
  12. I called Heinz the other day about their worst. sauce (which is gluten-free), and they emailed me a list of all their gluten-free products that same day (which included Ore-Ida and Smart Ones items.) Much easier than making it!
  13. In the middle of a thread, Scoobydoobydoo asked about mixed kitchen advice, and I'm interested too, so I thought I'd start a new post under that topic. We can read books and old posts that say get a toaster oven and have some of your own gluten-free-designated kitchenware, specifically: strainer, cutting board, perhaps even cooking utensils. Also have a...
  14. I'm two weeks into gluten-free and I've been very fatigued - this morning I took a nap, which is VERY unlike me. However school just started so me and my kids are getting up an hour earlier than we're used to in the summer, and I've been getting less sunlight. And yes, I'm also more blue/depressive - it may be bio-chemical, but I'm also overwhelmed...
  15. I've read recent and old posts, and I see that it varies on how long it takes until people feel better after going gluten-free - but is the improvement steady, or are there ups and downs? I'm a week and a half into gluten-free - and I was amazed at how quickly my abdominal bloating and gurgling decreased, however today the bloating and gurgling is back,...
  16. I'm new to the diagnosis and have been reading A LOT. Some of the cross-contamination stories I've read are scary - a cooking utensil touching pasta, a crumb on a counter, a bun accidentally brushing a burger, not washing your hands before eating - and then days or weeks of pain afterwards. Is this the case for most people, or do people not post the times...
  17. I don't understand the concern about vitamin E - or is it just you?
  18. Do you really have to get rid of teflon pans?? I'm newly diagnosed and will be having a shared kitchen. I have my own strainer and butter and I'm not using wooden spoons and I won't use the toaster. I thought that was pretty good. My cutting boards are plastic - wouldn't those wash well? And do I have to worry about teflon pans?
  19. Educating them won't help. If they haven't 'gotten it' by now, it isn't going to happen. Trying to educate them further could make them feel offended (I'm not saying their feelings would be justified) and it just won't work. I'd recommend you bring your own food, and say that your celiac's has 'gotten worse', and your food choices are even more limited...
  20. Could the microwave be a problem? Is it clean? My microwave right now has BBQ sauce splatters on the inside (and who knows what else?!) from stuff my husband puts in and doesn't cover up. I'm newly diagnosed with two kids, so I'll be having a shared kitchen, and I'm thinking I need to buy a gluten-free-only splatter cover for the microwave.
  21. I'm discovering my story is rare in America - I was diagnosed within two months of onset of sxs. My PCP thought I had giardia in June (sudden diahrrea, night sweats, pain, wt loss, major fatigue) - the sxs cleared A LOT with flagyl - so I think her dx was right, but the diahrrea and gas and major bloating continued so she sent me to a GI doc who did bloodwork...
