  1. Be aware as to whether you're getting enough magnesium because it works in concert with the potassium and calcium. All 3 of those need each other to interact and work properly. People that workout heavily might need more than the average person because of the heavy sweating. Good luck & keep us posted!
  2. "You Won't Believe It's Gluten-Free" by Roben Ryberg is a cookbook in which the majority of the recipes are structured to use a single flour or starch. I've made the potato starch-based muffins and cakes & they come out pretty good. There are recipes for sweet breads, pizza crust, rolls, & pie crust as well as main dishes.
  3. Are you getting enough sodium, potassium and magnesium? DH suffered from light-headedness & a brief blackout. After doctor's workup, doc recommended he add some salt to his diet. He also drinks alot of an electrolyte replacement beverage (made by the same company that makes Emergen-C). Bananas & oranges have lots of potassium & would make...
  4. I too love Udi's whole grain bread. It is so nice to eat a "real" toast! Our Whole Foods and another health food store keeps their Udi's bread in the freezer. Yet another health food store keeps it out on the shelf where it's nice and soft like regular wheat bread *sigh*
  5. Pssst! Those potato-starch based muffins freeze REALLY well...I make different flavors for me and my husband and freeze the extras so we have a variety available. I know, I know, it's dangerous tip!
  6. Roben Ryberg's "You Won't Believe It's Gluten-Free!" cookbook has been a lifesaver. Hubby has multiple allergies in addition to being gluten-intolerant (self-diagnosed) so having recipes that use a single flour instead of a blend had saved my sanity.
  7. Well, there must be a candy or sweet that made with sugar, honey or maple syrup made in NZ or Australia, or UK. Cannot begin to imagine abstaining! Seems that most of the chocolate bars made in Switzerland or Belgium seem to be made from sugar (so far) and semi-sweet chocolate bits for chocolate chip cookes are also made with sugar, at least in the US....
  8. I also had a reaction to some chocolate mints sweetened with glucose derived from wheat. I think it was made in the UK. Apparently I am more sensitive than I thought. I accidentally glutened myself the 2nd time because I was careless and did not read the label. The only thing I can recommend is read ALL the labels for any chocolate mints. I found one...
  9. Thanks so much! I'm a bit far (in So. Calif. although if I were driving thru, I'd definitely stop & shop). I can always ask my local Costcos to stock it since it's already in some of their AZ stores.
  10. I've heard good things about the flour. I bought Bob's Red Mill Organic Quinoa (4 lb bag) at Costco in Southern California Orange County area. It was a great price. Where is the Costco where she saw the flour? I'd drive to get some because Costco prices are so good.
  11. I've also had reactions to bandaids but only when I got older. There are rashes & discomfort where the adhesive touches the skin. I asked a nurse about it once & she said it's not uncommon. Nowadays, I just apply pressure, gauze and paper tape.
  12. Are you taking any vitamin supplements? Could be something in them you are reacting to, especially something like fish oil supplements. My husband had a reaction to the iodine in seafood and is allergic to tomato sauce and large tomatoes.
  13. Dr. Peter Green's book helped us figure out my husband's intolerance to iodine (apparently gluten-intolerant people have a tendency to also be intolerant to iodine).
  14. Well, it was a near-miss. There weren't quite enough serving spoons for each dish & hostess suggested sharing the spoon for the gluten-free quinoa with the stuffing! Augh! I had to insist they NOT do that, otherwise, my husband & I would be in trouble with CC.
  15. Glad you liked it! Look forward to hearing what you think of the Pasadena location.
  16. I am not familiar with Manhattan but there is a gluten-free Italian restaurant in the West Village called Risotteria. If you put their name and "+NYC" in Google, their website should come up. My husband and I ate there about 5 years ago & they were nice. Their (rice) bread sticks were awesome as was their pizza. If you try it, let us know how it...
  17. Dr. Peter H.R. Green's book discusses Dermatitis Herpetiformis (DH) and sensitivity to Iodine in the chapter on DH (p. 130-131). Quote from Dr. Green's book: "It is unclear what the mechanism of this relationship is, but we do know that people who have dermatitis herpetiformis also appear to be sensitive to iodine. Often the DH will not improve -and flare...
  18. Well, it is definitely frustrating. For our peace of mind at potlucks, we always bring our own gluten-free food with enough to share. We have had dinner with friends who are aware of our gluten-free eating and PERSIST in bringing desserts that have gluten. Go figure. There are too many hidden sources of gluten that could cause issues so I wouldn't even...
  19. If you are ever in the Redondo Beach area, there is gluten-free pizza at Garlic Jim's Pizza on PCH and Prospect. We spoke with the owner. He was very knowledgable and freely discussed their prep and cooking methods. We've eaten there about 6 times and not experienced CC (they sell regular pizza too).
  20. Thank you! Good to know. We tried to get the Irvine MM to offer gluten-free menu items in their restaurant. They tried it once, for about a week through a couple weekly specials and ONLY at the Irvine location (we were out in CM & they'd never heard of the specials). It was disappointing (premade pizza which had tomatoes or pesto with walnuts -...
  21. Is that the Mother's in Irvine or in Costa Mesa on 17th Street? We go to Irvine and Costa Mesa locations. I wasn't aware WF or Mother's took special orders! TJs is impossible, probably because they are owned by some huge European company (at least that's what I read in a book about TJs).
  22. I think we tried Au Lac in Fountain Valley a long time ago and it was very tasty. We're not up in that area much though but it's good to be reminded of it. Thank you for suggesting it.
  23. First Class Pizza, located in the shopping center at the corner of Sand Canyon and Irvine Blvd, offers a delicious gluten-free pizza. We always order a large so we have leftovers. Not sure if they offer a medium size too. We also found gluten-free pizza at the Whole Foods in The District shopping center (corner of Jamboree and Barranca) in the hot food...
  24. How about cashews & cashew butter or sunflower seed butter? Just a thought.
  25. I've had better luck with guar gum which is less expensive than xanthan gum. DH seems to be sensitive to the xanthan gum
