  1. My church sponsors a big Thanksgiving meal for a group of disadvantaged people (mental illness to simply being unable to live alone). I'm making a turkey, so my husband can eat the turkey without worrying about being glutined. I'm also going to bake a gluten-free pumpkin pie, and bringing a slice to the dinner as well as a gluten-free ciabatta roll. I...
  2. Love the note! We have eaten at several Outback restaurants with no problems at all. We've also had no problems with Famous Dave's. Still, with my DH virtually symptom-free, we probably would never know if he was glutened. He was glutened accidentally at Biaggi's, and inadvertently ate the regular bread that is brought to the table (I wasn't with him...
  3. We've eaten at the Famous Daves in east Louisville (Hurstbourne Parkway). Hubby has had no issues. But, before going, I went through the complete ingredient list and highlighted what he could have. The first time we went there, our server was very knowledgeable about celiac disease. The second time, we actually got a server who suffers from it as well...
  4. Has anyone tried to make a gluten-free ice cream cake? I thought of using Betty Crocker's gluten-free chocolate cake mix and topping it with ice cream, but not sure how I could get the ice cream at the right consistency to spread without it getting runny. Ideas? Icing it would pose another problem, unless I went completely nuts and tried a fondant...
  5. Go for it! If I were better at baking, I'd try it. As far as I know, Cedar Rapids, Iowa does not have a gluten-free bakery (If I'm wrong, PLEASE! correct me!!!)!!! Tigercat17, is that a dauchsund? What a cutie! I have a mini-longhair.
  6. Since hubby's October 2009 diagnosis, we have eaten at Famous Dave's a couple of times. Before we went, however, I went to their website and printed out the entire nutrition information for everything they had. I went through it thoroughly and highlighted the things that were listed as gluten-free. I put it into a book we carry with updated listing from...
  7. Thanks for the help! I have a box filled to the brim with food for him, including many of the things both of you listed. Will also send along a cooler for his Udi's bread (we never leave home without it), fruit juices, etc. I may have overdone it, but he has an added problem - Type I diabetes, so I believe I can never be too careful with his dietary...
  8. Someone had put together a list of "emergency" foods to have with you. I can't find it now, so if someone could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!
  9. I'm the same as you. Hubby has celiac disease. This is a great board with lots of people willing to help you out.
  10. We were moving our daughter into her apartment and needed a break for lunch. Being new to the area, we had no idea where to eat. Daughter got on the phone and called O'Charley's and explained our situation (hubby has celiac). The manager told us to come on over and ask for him. When he appeared at our table, he had a book full of nutritional information...
  11. We went to Old Chicago recently (hubby diagnosed in October, 2009), thinking there would be SOMETHING he could have. Unfortunately, nothing was guaranteed, so we finished our drinks and went Logan's Steakhouse just down the road. Not only did they have glute-free menu, but it was extensive, even down to salad dressings. The waitress was very knowledgeable...
  12. Hubby who has celiac said something interesting today. "I can tell when I have NOT had enough water to drink for the day; it seems like all the gluten-free food I eat takes up a lot of moisture." Does anyone else notice this? At least he is drinking a lot of water!
  13. Hubby has tried it and he seems OK with it. However, there is a difference between stores in various locations. Hubby likes a lot of sauce, so he orders extra sauce. The Cedar Rapids Olive Garden accommodates him, the the one in St. Louis area woul d not, saying their regular marinara sauce is not gluten-free.
  14. We are lucky that we have a Carlos O'Kelly's in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It has a great gluten-free menu and their chips and salsa are gluten free. Of, course, it is not an "authentic" Mexican restaurant, and I've found that language barriers do exist.
  15. I heard Betty Crocker was coming out with a gluten-free Bisquick mix. Has anyone seen them out on store shelves yet? Anxiously awaiting
  16. This is very good news! I used Bisquick all the time for pancakes and drop biscuits. I tried the cake mix and had better luck with the chocolate cate, brownies, and cookies. I've never had good luck with yellow cake mix, gluten-free and non-gluten-free. I have been making the Mrs. Leepers meals, but am looking forward to gluten-free Hamburger Helper...
  17. Worst gluten-free Products: Yep, the Ener-G bread. Any of the biscuit mixes, except for the pancake and waffle mix where you can make drop biscuits (forget the name). Kinnikinnek (sp?) chocolate-chip muffins. Hubby actually put butter on them to make them edible. Best: Udi bread and pizza crust. Kinnikinnek (sp?) angel food cake mix. Van's gluten...
  18. I know this is probably a long-shot, but does anyone have any recommendations for restaurants that offer gluten-free options in Ames, Iowa (the home of Iowa State University)? We will be spending a day there this Saturday. The Governor's Cup Taekwando competition is being held and Hubby is going to help coach competitors.
  19. Please don't assume everyone that works at a fast-food place is a stupid 16-year-old. I'm a professional, but if I ever got tossed out on the street, and was having trouble finding a job, I would not hesitate to work at a fast-food restaurant. There are many people working at fast-food places that are very over-qualified, especially in these economic times...
  20. Welcome to the board. Husband was diagnosed in October of 2009. He is also Type I diabetic. My kitchen is 99% gluten-free. I have some regular bread and some frozen meals squirreled away in the freezer for myself, but most of the time I eat what he eats, especially on weekends. It's funny, but when our daughter came home for a visit, she found some...
  21. Since my hubby was diagnosed in October 2009, we have avoided buffet-like places. Not because of his celiac disease, but like many other posts have said, I've become more careful about where we eat. Especially because of the danger of cross-contamination.
  22. We were frequent patrons of a little pub/eatery called the Irish Democrat, especially for lunch. However, when Fang was diagnosed with celiac, we thought going to the ID was a thing of the past. We were so frequent that when one of the servers saw us, she knew to get Fang his iced tea with lots of Sweet & Low, and me my diet soft drink. I tried calling...
  23. Here in Iowa, we have a grocery store chain called HyVee. Their website has a 50+ page document listing their brands that are gluten-free. HyVee store brands are generally cheaper than name brands, with not much difference in quality. You might want to check with your local grocery store chain and see if they have (or will) publish a gluten-free list....
  24. Do either of these places offer gluten-free menu items? How about your experiences with either of these places?
  25. I don't know where you live, but there is a chain called Biaggi's that has a super fantastic gluten-free menu. Pizza, pasta, even gluten-free bread to dip in their olive oil, cheese, and pepper dip. Their gluten-free menu is three pages long. The servers are very knowledegeable (sp?) and the cooks have been thoroughtly trained.
