  1. Spanakopita. Although I was feeling pretty bad at the time - and stressed about not being able to eat bread/pasta/cake etc for the rest of my life - so I didn't really enjoy it. I do really miss filo pastry though.
  2. I suffer from nausea when I get glutened and I find that ginger really helps. You can drink ginger tea or take ginger tablets that they sell for motion sickness.
  3. She might want to look at shopping online and having gluten free items delivered to her. I visited Salzburg recently and there weren't a lot of options re dining. There are Reformhaus stores which are great. But I didn't see any gluten free options on any restaurant menu during my trip. I showed my coeliac translation card to a waiter and he just looked...
  4. Make sure you check out this completely gluten free restaurant in Montmartre. I had a great meal there! Open Original Shared Link
  5. I have been gluten free for 8 months now but I am still having this exact same issue. My alternating constipation/diarrhoea has been fixed but I do get minor stomach pain, nausea and cramping quite often after a healthy BM. My guts feel - not inflamed - but kind of hot. It makes me a bit cranky. I'm not sure if it is because my intestines still haven't fully...
  6. Schar products are great. I survived on their bread rolls during my recent trip to Germany. And we can get their croissants in Australia and I love them!
  7. Try googling the word "kasha" for recipes. That's what buckwheat is known as in Russia and Eastern Europe and that's where it is used the most. I know that buckwheat groats can be made into a savoury side dish that can be used to accompany meals instead of rice or potatoes. Also, I use this handy shortcut to shorten the cooking time when using buckwheat...
  8. The supermarkets where I live in Australia sell a gluten free tempura batter in the regular asian section of the store. It could be worth checking out your local supermarket.
  9. Yes, I do. I very occasionally get a bit on my elbows but most of the time my scalp is the problem.
  10. I just got back from Paris and I found this great little gluten free restaurant in Montmartre called Des Si et Des Mets. The staff don't speak any English but since the entire place is gluten free it isn't an issue. You can have a three course meal for a pretty reasonable price. It was just fantastic to actually be able to eat proper French cuisine instead...
  11. Golden syrup is not corn syrup. It has nothing to do with corn. It's not used much in the U.S. but it is used a lot in baking in Australia, New Zealand and the UK. You cam buy it from specialist British shops. Open Original Shared Link
  12. Don't be discouraged. Stick with it. It is quite possible to make really good gluten free bread at home and, once you know how, it is quite easy too. I had a few hiccups at the start too. You may also need to try a few different recipes until you find one that you like. Everyone has different tastes.
  13. Well, I can't say that it has helped at all with coping with a gluten free lifestyle... but I do love to knit! I have started up a stitch 'n b*tch group in my local area and - as the organiser - I damn well make sure that we meet at a cafe that has lots of gluten free options. I need my gluten free cake when I knit.
  14. All the episodes from the first season of Gluten Freedom are now available online on the show's website! Open Original Shared Link
  15. Okay, well I've been in Germany for a couple of days now so I thought I would post an update. My flight was pretty good. Qantas remembered my gluten free meals and they were quite edible if a bit tasteless. My only complaint is that all their special meals have the same extras, ie soy milk, margarine instead of butter, etc. So even though I could have...
  16. Yes, I get the hot stomach symptom as well. NOt all the time but fairly regularly. I've only been gluten free for 6 months and I'm taking a long time to improve. So I'm not sure if the attacks of hot stomach are a result of getting glutened or just another dip in my rollercoaster ride of recovery
  17. I have stolen my girlfriend's gloves. They are really helping - although I do feel like a bit of a nuff-nuff wearing gloves in Australia (even though it is winter at the moment). I need better socks though. I'm a cheap skate and don't like spending money on things like socks. Consequently all my socks are cheap and not very warm.
  18. Yes, all the time. And my girlfriend does have a tendency to shriek when I touch her. It's not the response I'm really looking for although it does have it's amusement value.
  19. I was diagnosed with coeliac 6 months ago. Since then I have been following a strict gluten free diet but haven't improved much. I've also developed a recurring rash on my scalp which I suspect might be DH. About the time I was diagnosed I started getting numb fingertips on my left hand. This has worsened over time. Now I get varying degrees of numbness...
  20. All the news channels carried stories about this last night in Australia. Open Original Shared Link
  21. I was diagnosed six months ago and haven't improved much on a gluten free diet. In fact, some things have gotten worse. I've been getting low level nausea for months. It doesn't seem to be directly related to eating ie it doesn't just happen after I eat something. And it's not severe. In fact, I usually have the urge to eat something to try to settle my...
  22. Yep. Refractory celiac (aka refractory sprue, unresponsive celiac, non-responsive celiac) is when tests show that a celiac doesn't respond to a gluten free diet. The following info is purely what I've managed to glean of the internet so please don't take it as gospel. Do your own research from reputable sources. The most common reason is deliberately...
  23. Apples are a big no-no with Fructose malabsorption. Plums are a stone fruit and should be ok. But with fructose malabsorption it's all about the loading. When you eat something high in fructose, it may or may not be tolerated by you depending on how much other high fructose foods you have already eaten that day. This makes it hard to track down. Plus,...
  24. I made this yesterday and it was pretty damn good! And I love the fact that it doesn't have any sugar or butter in it. I might try adding a bit of cinnamon or mixed spice next time. But, yeah, there will definitely be a next time for this recipe. Thanks for posting it.
  25. You can be intolerant to carbohydrates???? Damn! I don't know if I could cope with that one. I was eating potatoes and sweet potatoes when i was feeling good. Are grain carbs different from potato carbs? In retrospect, I probably should have started by re-introducing just one thing - preferably with a single ingredient. The stuff I ate was regular gluten...
