ARCHIVED Are Supplements Labled "gluten Free" Really Safe?
kareng replied to Rhobhan's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Once again, I think you don't understand the concept of gluten testing. There is no test that can say 0. Less than 10 ppm could mean 9 ppm ( an incredibly small number) or 0 ppm. If your Celiac blood antibodies are very high, that is not likely from 1 or 2 servings of turkey with gluten. You might want to check out the Fasano diet for people who... -
ARCHIVED Probiotics Not Always gluten-free
kareng replied to cyclinglady's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The fact is, there is no way to test for 0 gluten. A test that says less than 10 ppm could very well have 0 or 1. 10 parts per million is so small. You will never find anything that can guarantee there is absolutely no gluten with current tests. Let me say it again - testing at less than 10 ppm does not mean there is any gluten in it. -

ARCHIVED More, Worse Symptoms,.... Depression Taking Hold.
kareng replied to jeanzdyn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't know how you travel, but if you travel by car, you could bring a small cooler for fruit or yogurt. You could stop at groceries for fruit, carrots, microwaveable dinner, cheese, cold cuts, nuts, etc. If your hotel doesn't give you a fridge, you can ask for one for " medical reasons". Sometimes you can get a microwave that way, too. Or they will... -

ARCHIVED Question On Product (Link Included)
kareng replied to symphonyofdreams547's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That glutamate part doesn't make any sense. Wonder if Amazon or whoever is selling it added that? Glutamate is part of MSG but not gluten. It does naturally occur in some foods. I think there are a few other brands that you could try. Were you the one with that Thread this week? -
ARCHIVED False Positive Vs False Negative. What's More Reliable?
kareng replied to woodyfly's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Actually, durum, semolina, spelt, kaput and graham are actually wheat. They are just a slightly different version of wheat. Like a Granny Smith is a bit different version of an apple from a Red Delicious. -
ARCHIVED Linear Iga Dermatosis And Dapsone
kareng replied to arcdejules's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I am no expert on DH, but I know people will want to know the answers to these questions - Was the Celiac test a blood test or a proper skin biopsy next to a fresh lesion? Were you gluten free for an extended time before the blood tests? Are you currently gluten-free? Edit - I just looked it up and it does say it presents as similar to DH and is... -

ARCHIVED Cream Of Mushroom Soup And Onion Soup Mix.
kareng replied to symphonyofdreams547's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't use the dry onion soup mixes but I have seen one in the " healthy" section that was gluten-free. It was white and green and maybe named " simply". Or "organic". The point being.... There are some out there, you just have to look hard. They aren't very big.... -
ARCHIVED Cream Of Mushroom Soup And Onion Soup Mix.

Open Original Shared Link Just as good as " gluteny" and this brand is everywhere. Also, Progresso has a mushroom soup that is gluten-free but it isn't condensed so you may have to adjust fluid in a recipe. -
ARCHIVED False Positive Vs False Negative. What's More Reliable?
kareng replied to woodyfly's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I moved this to " Other food intolerances" because you are talking about allergy testing, not Celiac testing. I don't know a lot about allergy testing, but I have heard it is very hard to test for food allergies. -
You should be eating gluten to be tested for Celiac - blood tests or endoscopy. Stool tests cannot tell you if you have Celiac. The only mention of stool testing is the ones for non- Celiac gluten sensitivity because there aren't any for Celiac at this time. ARCHIVED First Gluten Free/ Allergy Free Food Pantry
kareng posted a topic in Publications & Publicity
The picture of the couscous is odd. I think she is supposed to be sorting food and removing it. Otherwise, this is a new food pantry here in the KC area. I have heard that they already have a big demand. Open Original Shared Link -
This is horrible. I don't know where you live, but maybe there are other food pantries? I know we have some here that allow you to " shop". You could choose things like beans and rice and canned veggies. Not exciting, but safe. I think someone suggested this but check with your local Celiac association or food allergy support groups. Some of them...

The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
kareng replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
trying to get this topic moving again. I am getting bored with my old standards. Hoping for some ideas. Last night we had a pork stir fry. I take ground pork (which is low fat and cheaper than chicken or beef right now). I mix in a bunch of Chinese Five Spice powder, then cook it and remove it from the pan. Then I stir fry whatever veggies I have... -
ARCHIVED Also Intolerant To Casein (Dairy), Soy And/or Corn?
kareng replied to swampy land's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Not necessarily. Many don't get an "immediate" reaction. It can take hours or even a day to react. Sometimes, people don't even get a reaction every time. Probably has to do with amounts of gluten, stomach contents, a reaction that you don't realize is from gluten (like a headache, for example), probably other reasons. I can see you are really sure... -

kareng replied to swampy land's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
How would you know if you don't get tested? You certainly have the symptoms of Celiac. No - Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease. So far, there are no complete cures. Eating a gluten free diet can eliminate the symptoms and manifestations - so I guess you could think of it as a cure. -
ARCHIVED Iga Blood Test Result
kareng replied to CurrantCottage's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sorry. I thought you were talking about the test to see if you even make IGA. When yousaid "deficient" that's what I thought you meant as you aren't "deficient" if your Celiac antibody test is negative. You want to not have very many of those. You seem to be talking about the actual antibody tests? The tests will come with a range that is "normal... -

ARCHIVED Only gluten-free In The House: Gluten Residue On Clothes And Bed Covers
kareng replied to FallenLegacy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Wash your bedding and clothes? That should get rid of whatever dirt that is on them. Vacuum, dust, wipe down...... Just like you would clean for any other dirt or dust or crumbs. A couple of places that you should make sure to clean for gluten are kitchen drawers - seems like crumbs always fall in. And toasters/ toaster ovens. And , of course, the... -
ARCHIVED Kuay Teow Rice Noodles
kareng replied to jddh's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Looks like you have Celiac disease. You really should be completely gluten free. Read ingredients on all of your food. You will have a hard time feeling and healing well if you continue to eat small amounts of gluten. There are a few brands that make gluten-free noodles that might be similar to those noodles. You may want to look on line at gluten-free...
