ARCHIVED Completely Disappointed
newgfcali replied to newgfcali's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
All wonderful and yummy sounding! Unfortunately I'm dairy-free and one of my dinner mates is allergic (IgE type allergy - yipes!!!) to chocolate. The trifle idea is terrific... I'll file that away in my tiny mind until the day I can reintroduce dairy. It would be perfect for company -- very pretty. Maybe I'll just throw in the towel and buy some fresh... -
ARCHIVED Is This A Catchy Way To Start My Celiac Presentation?
newgfcali replied to runningcrazy's topic in Publications & Publicity
Here's the dance: Great idea -- go for it! -
I've got a dinner party to go to tonight and offered to bring dessert. I bought a new gluten-free baking book and it has so many yummy-looking recipes in it, that I thought I'd take it out for a test-drive. I think of myself as a pretty good baker, but haven't done a lot of baking since going gluten-free 6 months ago. I must say, it's like starting over...

ARCHIVED Royal Caribbean Cruiseline--Bad Experience With gluten-free Diet
newgfcali replied to JARAT's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Even without prior notice RCCL was able to handle my needs. They really try very hard to please. -
ARCHIVED Elimination Or Cave Man Diet
newgfcali replied to jenngolightly's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
There's a very simple elimination diet that starts with lamb and pears. If you live in the US, these two items are rarely eaten, or at least more rare than say beef and apples. You start with the lamb and pears and continue eating just those two things until you feel pretty good. Then you add one thing for a week. If you're well for that week, you add another... -
ARCHIVED Royal Caribbean Cruiseline--Bad Experience With gluten-free Diet
newgfcali replied to JARAT's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
It may vary from ship to ship within RCCL. We were on Mariner of the Seas in February and my experience was quite different. Although I had not contacted them prior to the cruise to alert them to my dietary restrictions, when we boarded we beelined to the restaurant and talked to the asst. head waiter and explained my needs, which at the time were no gluten... -
ARCHIVED Gluten and Gluttony - New York Times
newgfcali replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
Re: Gluten and Gluttony article in the Times... Dr. Nehra seems a little out of touch with current research regarding non-celiac gluten sensitivity and the myriad of problems it can create. "Placebo effect"? Oh, really? It's outdated thinking like this that's keeping a ton of people sick when they could be so much healthier. -
ARCHIVED Never Ending Bloating -
newgfcali replied to pufffee's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm with ahorsesoul... bloating IS a reaction, so maybe there is another food you're sensitive to. Try deep-sixing the soy and yeast and see if that helps. If all else fails, you can do an extreme elimination diet, starting with very simple things like lamb and pears, then start adding one thing at a time. It takes a really long time, but at least you'll... -
ARCHIVED Leg Pain
newgfcali replied to DonaldandAlanda Evans's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had bilateral peripheral neuropathy before going gluten free. (That's in fact why I went gluten free, hoping to make it better.) Neuropathy can be very painful, and can cause tingling in feet and hands as well. Ataxia can cause weakness in limbs. If you google "gluten neuropathy" and "gluten ataxia" you'll come up with some links on new research being done... -
ARCHIVED Tyson Chicken Breasts
newgfcali replied to Rissmeek's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Discussions like this about how meats are raised and processed is exactly why I was a vegetarian for so many years! Had to give it up because I was not very good at it. Could never get the right combos for the complete proteins, so added back fowl and fish. I just try not to think about how they're processed. -

You might try chewing on a little ginger in the morning if you can. It might help to soothe your stomach. -

ARCHIVED Hot Dog And Hamburger Buns That Taste Good?
newgfcali replied to farmwife67's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yeah, that's kinda what I thought. But I was so paranoid at the time that I threw out the rest of the muffins. Shoulda waited a bit and tried them again. I swear I've wasted more money trying stuff in the past 5 months than I have my entire life. It's really challenging getting a handle on this diet. Unfortunately, according to their website, they don... -

Here's a link to the abstract by Dr. Hadjivassiliou that talks about a study he conducted: Open Original Shared Link Google his name (if you can spell it!) and you'll come up with lots of info about this subject. He's one of the leading researchers in celiac and gluten sensitivity related diseases. -

I tried the Kinnickinnick english muffins about 2 months after going gluten-free and was sick shortly after. That was at a time when I was still making mistakes (yeah, like I don't make any mistakes NOW), so I don't know if it was the muffins or some stupid thing I did. Has anyone else had a problem with KK products? -
ARCHIVED Looking For Good Frozen Pizza
newgfcali replied to farmwife67's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Pretty creative, karen... hadn't thought of any of those possibilities. The scrambled egg thing sounds a little weird (sorry), but the fruit tart is a great idea. Peanut butter and chocolate? LOL! You are creative! Yeah, it was about $6, but since we used to pay over $20 for our weekly pizza, I figured it'd be worth it. Weekly pizza.... those were... -

ARCHIVED Looking For Good Frozen Pizza
newgfcali replied to farmwife67's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Udi's makes a frozen pizza crust that's soy-free, dairy-free and nut-free (who puts nuts in their crusts???). I haven't tried it yet, but I have one sitting in my freezer. I brought it home thinking I'd put some soy cheese on it, then found out I can't have soy. So it's still sitting in my freezer! Oh, well.... someday.... -

ARCHIVED Blood Test Results-Help Please
newgfcali replied to michelley65's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Michelle~ If you are still interested in testing, do what mushroom suggested and take the enterolab test. If you are reacting to gluten, the test will pick it up even if you've been gluten light for a while. I was completely gluten free for about 3 months when I took their test and it was still positive. It's very sensitive. They can test anti-gliadin IgA... -
ARCHIVED I Wasn't Sure What To Say...
newgfcali replied to shepgs's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No, you're not overreacting. You're keeping your family safe and healthy. Since it's your sister-in-law and this will surely come up again in the future, maybe you could give her the cliff's notes version of what gluten intolerance is all about and the potential for severe neurological issues it holds for DQ1 families like yours. -
ARCHIVED Which Doctor Next? Allergist? Neurologist? Gastro?
newgfcali replied to newgfcali's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Wolicki, I totally agree with you about doctors -- I've had no luck with them either. But I've done as much as I can do without getting a doctor involved (I think). Raven & missy'smom - I will look into allergists in my area and try to find one knowledgeable about intolerances and elimination diets. Missy'smom, I've also ordered the book you suggested... -
ARCHIVED Which Doctor Next? Allergist? Neurologist? Gastro?
newgfcali posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Our story so far... After 5 months of being gluten free and taking some Enterolab tests, I now know I'm non-celiac gluten intolerant. I'm a double DQ1, which research has found to be super sensitive to gluten, with a side of neurological problems. I've got a positive dx for peripheral neuropathy. Enterolab says I'm also sensitive to soy, casein, and yeast... -
ARCHIVED Pf Chang's Expanded gluten-free Menu
newgfcali replied to ChickensDon'tClap's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Um, that would be me. Granted, going to a Chinese restaurant when you're soy free doesn't make a lot of sense, but I figure at least they know enough about food allergies that they won't cc me. I ordered steamed rice and steamed veggies with no sauces. But if you're NOT soy free, then the sky's the limit. Not every dish on their gluten-free menu has soy in...
