  1. Lucia: I am SOOOOOOO happy to hear this!!! I know that is plagued you for so long - I am sure it's a combo of all of those elements. Yay!!! ~Allison
  2. I am wondering that as well. I am pretty sure that it will probably be gluten-free but it might cause problems for those with soy problems as silk is known for its soy milk and it might be produced on the same lines. It would be nice to have another brand available rather than just Blue Diamond. I wonder if this one will have carageenan in it as well...
  3. Sherry: "Brain fog" ... it's something you know you had when it's no longer there. It's a feeling of not not being very sharp, feeling kind of fuzzy, and generally tired. But you know more what is was when it's no longer there.
  4. There is sometimes caramel coloring in ginger ale but in the US, unless is specifies wheat, it is made from corn. It could be the carbonation, maybe? If you have a stomach which is more on the sensitive side, the carbonation may be upsetting it? Carbonation always made my stomach growl at me. It's one of the main reasons that I rarely drink...
  5. Hi All: I am going to a conference next month to DC. I will be there for an entire week and staying in a hotel room. This is my first big foray into relying mostly on restaurants for a week or so, so I am a bit nervous. I very rarely eat out. I'll be mostly about Dupont Circle and in the government area for lunches. Can anyone give me some good tips...
  6. Hiya: I am only guessing here but I imagine that the "Gluten free setting" on the breadman you are looking at - basically has it go through only 1 rise (usually the 2rd of 3). gluten-free loaves always have the consistency of cake dough only and they only need to go through one rise cycle. They actually take a shorter time to make than wheat based...
  7. Yes, most definitely. I have had two lumps of tissue (I read that they are cysts) for about 25 years (about the same time as I was experiencing all these problems). They are now shrinking a lot. I expect them to go away within the year, I hope. Inflammation can very systemic!!
  8. Congrats!! Isn't just an amazing change!!! I remember when I was consuming massive amounts of poison to get tested. I went to a local celiac group meeting and introduced myself to the woman that runs it. She remarked on how tired I looked and how deep the circles under my eyes were. Now, three months later, she's pleased to see how much energy I...
  9. On a typical day: Breakfast - piece of bread that I made, a banana, then vitamins swigged down with some kefir. 10:00 am at work: decaf Indian masala tea with a little almond milk Lunch - baggie of carrots, curry (I make a big batch for lunches over the weekend) with brown rice, and some water with a splash of lime juice, sometimes a whole cucumber...
  10. No, I was just saying that soy sauce usually has wheat in it. You should call them and ask if the soy sauce they used was a gluten free soy sauce. Other than that it looks okay
  11. Um, Hercules, soy sauce is fermented with wheat and usually contains gluten. Unless they made it with gluten-free soy sauce. Other than that it looks okay. ~Allison
  12. The flattened villi is most defintiely celiac disease. But everything else you mentioned is indicative of it as well. There are about 300 symptoms associated with Celiac. Has your doctor run a thyroid test too? Some of what you have mentioned can be linked to hypothyroidism. He should also test your B12 levels. Low ferratin is not the only cause...
  13. Hi WP: That is a lot of coffee!! Even though the coffee is decaf, it tends to be very acidic and it can irritate your stomach. I had to give up any kind of coffee. It does awful thing to my stomach and digestive system. I drink decaf indian spice tea now and never have a problem. Do you drink decaf tea, and if you do does it bother you as well??
  14. I work at a library where many research fellows come through. When most of them leave they bring treats for the staff to thank them for their help. Most of the time, I can't eat any of them as you might expect. Last week or so, one of the long term fellows left and brought in a carvel ice cream cake, with me in mind, thinking that I would be able...
  15. Don't be nervous. You will be out for it. What they give you to put you out you should ask. I ask because I knew that opiates and I don't mix so I asked them to go easy on the fentonel (sp?). Also, there are no nerve/pain receptors in the tissue of the esophagus or in the intestines so any tissue they take you will not feel any pain. The only thing...
  16. I hadn't heard that either. But I don't know everything about this at all. Just to say that sources of iodine are few - and fish and seaweed are the best natural sources. A kelp pill is the very best way to get the iodine into your body, however. Low energy can also be a B12 issue so if you are not taking B12 you should be doing that. 1000 mg is...
  17. I don't think that iodine is related to ferratin levels. Ferratin levels are iron content in the blood. Iodine isn't in a lot of stuff, which is why they tend to iodize salt. Most people get enough salt, though. I have spoken to a friend of mine about kelp and iodine and how important it is for proper thyroid function, esp. if you think you might be...
  18. I take Nature's Way kelp once a day. It's 660 mg of kelp. The capsule is made of gelatin, but that's all it says. Can gelatin be sourced from corn? The packaging doesn't specify. But I find another Kelp pill made by Country Life which specifies "Does Not Contain: Yeast, corn, wheat, soy, gluten, milk, salt, sugar, starch, preservatives or artificial...
  19. Hi All: I found this wonderful recipe for breakfast cereal bars and I wanted to share with people here. I made them and they are very, very good. A diabetic coworker of mine called them birdseed bars because I used millet seed instead of millet flake cereal. I also substituted brown rice syrup for corn syrup which I don't like. But you could use maple...
  20. Cass: The latest issue of Living Without magazine has an article on this subject. You might want to seek it out. It had a lot of helpful tips on dining in college with allergies and how to get around them in the dorm, etc. ~Allison
  21. Sean: If you get tested and come up with a negative for celiac, and going off the gluten makes you feel better, then you have your answer. There are a lot of us here who have had that experience. But real congrats to you on giving up smoking!! Keep going with that!! It will contribute a lot to your continued healing. ~Allison
  22. That's true. The only test that I can think of to diagnose gluten intolerance is the Enterolab tests and the genetic markers. I hope that at some point there will be tests for gluten intolerance. It would give even more answers to those who don't have auto-immune celiac and may prevent more misery to people earlier on. ~Allison
  23. I thought that was the going theory, Jestgar Celiac is genetic and auto-immune but gluten intolerance just is? No? There is lots of research into celiac but not much at all into "simple" gluten intolerance. ~Allison
  24. Regarding budgetary restrictions, remember in the 1980s when President Reagen classified ketchup as a vegetable, grrrrrrrrrrrrrr So it would fit into a school lunch program. It's not an old idea this thing!! But it's still just as sad. ~Allison
  25. Sean: If you do have celiac, then you need to stay on the gluten, sadly, otherwise it will skew the tests, as Raven has commented. Gluten intolerance is not auto-immune like celiac. But more people suffer from gluten intolerance than have celiac. Some people believe that gluten intolerance is a kind of "pre-celiac". There are not many studies on gluten...
