  1. Generally speaking, the only flavour of concern is malt. I can't for the life of me imagine why you would put that in a gravy.
  2. Whey protein is gluten-free, but is dairy.
  3. As I said, "seasoning" can contain hidden gluten. "Spices" can not. Read the ingredients carefully.
  4. I can't speak to Tidy Cat. I know nothing about it. I operate a retail store that sells pet foods and supplies, including cat litter. The only litter in our store that contains gluten is Swheat Scoop--it is made from wheat. I have heard of a litter that is made from rye, but as far as I know it is not yet available in Canada. For our own three cats...
  5. I would be very surprised if anything has changed in two months. They have not changed in (at least) 10 years with respect to the Kisses.
  6. Most GI doctors are not very educated on the details of the diet. I would not accept that claim without scientific evidence to back it up.
  7. Please provide an authoritative source for this claim. The only problem I have ever heard of is scratched coatings trapping gluten inside the scratches (a problem not unique to nonstick).
  8. Wecome to the board. The Canadian Celiac Association lists tocopherols as gluten-free, without qualification as to source. In the US, where Rice Chex are sold, wheat as the source would have to be disclosed by law (FALCPA). Tocopherols are just not something I worry about.
  9. You are probably okay. We have all heard the tales about gluten in the adhesive, but in over ten years I have never found a documented instance of this actually being the case. I consider it an urban myth.
  10. I don't see anything in that list that looks like gluten to me, but I'm not an expert in British/EU labeling. Those codes beginning with "E" are defined by EU rules. Perhaps somebody else can help with them.
  11. Soy is gluten-free, but some people, including some celiacs, are unable to eat it. It is one of the FDA's top eight allergens, so it must be clearly disclosed on labels in the USA.

    ARCHIVED New To This

Most Kraft dressings are gluten-free. Kraft will clearly disclose any gluten in any of their products, so you just have to read the ingredients. I know the French and Golden Italian are gluten-free.
  13. We buy packaged beans (currently sourcing them from Starbucks) and grind them at home. Plain coffee beans are inherently gluten-free.
  14. Well done, and congratulations. It is possible to overcome many obstacles it you try hard enough.
  15. I have never in my ten+ years found a spice which had gluten in it. Seasoning mixes (including such things as curry powder and chili powder) with gluten are out there. But spices are usually single-ingredient products containing only the named spice. When spices appears in an ingredient list, it can not hide any grain product whether a gluten grain or...
  16. How long did it take, after that, before you let him out of bed?
  17. The single word ingredient "vinegar" is apple cider vinegar. If you are in the US, then wheat as the source would have to be clearly disclosed either in the ingredient list, or in a "contains" statement adjacent to the ingredients. White distilled vinegar is safe. Although it can be from a source other than apples, it is usually so labeled to distinguish...
  18. Welcome to the board. False negatives are fairly common, but false positives are very rare. Did they do a total serum IgA test? If your total immune system is not functioning fully, then false negatives will occur on the gluten-specific tests.
  19. She is wrong about the cecum--it plays no part in celiac disease that I have ever heard of. The immune system reacts to gluten and produces antibodies which attack the small intestine. From what you describe, your mother's small intestine is all there. Damage to the villi can not be detected by colonoscopy, although it is often wise to do one in case there...
  20. Diabetic (Type 1) speaking: It is not the same thing at all. Sugar does not trigger an autoimmune reaction. It does not cause antibodies to be produced. It does not cause my body to be attacked and damaged by those antibodies. When properly balanced with insulin, small amounts are safe. A small quantity of sugar in a medicine I take once a day will not...
  21. Betty Crocker promised a GLUTEN-FREE mix. They delivered a GLUTEN-FREE mix. They have changed the ingredients in their still-GLUTEN-FREE mix. I realize that some of us have other issues. Those who do must read the ingredient list on everything, including products labeled gluten-free. Soy is a top eight allergen, so in the US it will be clearly disclosed...
  22. Red wine vinegar is gluten-free.
  23. Coke's carbonated beverages are all gluten-free. The color, at least in North America, is derived from corn, but would be below 5 ppm in any event (that is the coloring being below 5 ppm, not the finished product).
  24. The Marsh scale measures the degree of damage to the villi. It ranges from 1 to 4 (well, zero means no damage). Marsh 4 describes total destruction of the villi--that is where I was in July of 2000.
  25. Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce, if you like it. The version sold in the US is gluten-free, and is even labeled as such. The one made under licence in Canada has "malt vinegar (from barley)" as the first ingredient.
