ARCHIVED Turtles Candy
psawyer replied to angelbender's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Shared facility with Good Manufacturing Practices. That works for me. I have to limit my consumption due to sugar content, but I don't worry about gluten in Turtles. Suddenly, I have this craving... -

ARCHIVED Catholic Communion - Low Gluten Host
psawyer replied to Rosiesallergies's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
According to Roman Catholic doctrine, for the communion to be valid, the wafer must contain wheat. All Roman Catholic churches are required to follow that rule. We are not here to debate whether that rule is right or not, since it simply is the rule. Period. A valid communion can be in either kind, so you can receive the wine and not the wafer. -
ARCHIVED Is It Possible To Get Gluten From The Dishwasher?
psawyer replied to niese's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You miss my point. Gliadin is soluble in alcohol. It does not break down or become denatured, no matter how pure the alcohol. When the alcohol evaporates, the intact gliadin is still there. If you have proof that this is not true, please provide your evidence for us all to see. -
ARCHIVED Infuriating Article On New gluten-free Restaurant
psawyer replied to C-Girl's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Jumping in here about "shared facilities." They run a spectrum from safe for almost all of us, to dangerous for us all. Most are closer to the former case. Flour is problematic because is is a light powder that can float in the air and land anywhere. Any facility where it is used is a potential problem. I say "potential" because it is only a problem if... -
ARCHIVED Is It Possible To Get Gluten From The Dishwasher?
psawyer replied to niese's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It has some effect, but it is not enough. After all, if alcohol completely denatured gluten, we could all drink beer. -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed . . . What To Avoid On Food Labeling?
psawyer replied to justneguy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The obvious things to look for, and avoid, are wheat, rye, barley and oats. In Canada and the US, wheat must be clearly disclosed on the label, either in the ingredients list, or in a "contains" statement. In Canada, all gluten sources must be clearly disclosed. Rye and oats don't hide, but barley can in the US. Look for the word "malt" and assume it is...- 6 replies

ARCHIVED Is It Just Me, Or Are Others Not Able To Copy And Paste Links?
psawyer replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Copying and pasting links is often problematic. It has nothing to do with where you are pasting to, but the copy. Browsers may display a shortened version of a long url, or may be displaying something other than the actual url, like "click here." To copy a link, right click on it. A short menu will appear. Select: Copy link address (Chrome) Copy Link Location... -
ARCHIVED Making Gluten Free Cookies In A Gluten Kitchen?
psawyer replied to smartcookie's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Mixed kitchens pose some challenges, but can be done. We no longer do, but we managed for a number of years while my wife was still eating gluten. There are others among us here who currently do it. -

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Foods Still Causing Gluten Reaction
psawyer replied to FastTurtle's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Welcome to the board. You may be reacting to something else in the product. Other intolerances are common among people with celiac disease. You don't say how long you have been gluten-free. If you have celiac disease, and damage was done, it may not yet have fully healed. In that case, random reactions to almost anything can occur. The fact that you have... -
ARCHIVED Can Something Not Be Gluten Free Even If The Label Looks Okay?
psawyer replied to Nick-incollege's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Open Original Shared Link It says nothing of the sort. Indeed, it says such a provision was deliberately not included. In general, yes. It means that the company does not intentionally include ingredients containing or derived from gluten grains, but the ingredients and/or the final product are NOT tested for possible accidental contamination, so they won... -
The Funny Pages - Tickle Me Elbow - The Sequel
psawyer replied to TriticusToxicum's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
It is New Year's Eve, a time for reflection. This board has now been running for 10 years. It went online to the world on December 31, 2003. I joined on December 28, 2004, so it is nine years for me. I have have been honoured to be a moderator since 2007. The year now ending has been an eventful one for me--some good, some bad. As 2014 dawns, I wish all... -
ARCHIVED Newbie Questions About Whisky
psawyer replied to KCG91's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Distilled enough? What nonsense is that? It is distilled or it is not. Distillation boils the mash, then condenses the vapor. The result is the distillate. Something cannot be "not distilled enough" anymore than a woman can be "not pregnant enough." -

psawyer replied to CynthiaSt's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Although I am not far from Oshawa, I don't know the area. I'm about 40 minutes drive time from Bloor & Simcoe. Ironically, I will be in Oshawa very briefly this evening. -

Wahoo, Tony! -
I am not familiar with the fixtures you describe, but I am generally knowledgeable about lighting and can off some insight. I am assuming that when you say "coily bulb" you mean a Open Original Shared Link. Dimmable ones do exist, as do ones for use outdoors. They are hard to find, and the ones that are widely sold are neither. Even if you find one that...

ARCHIVED Pam Cooking Spray
psawyer replied to IsAMom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This topic is more than six years old. My comment on 15 March 2007 still stands. With the exception of PAM Baking, all versions of PAM are gluten-free. ConAgra will clearly disclose gluten in any of their products. -
I don't know where this is coming from. In the US, there is a standard being phased in regarding gluten-free labels. But Canada has had one for years. It was updated effective August 4, 2012. Here is the applicable Canadian regulation. It applies to all food sold in Canada, regardless of where it comes from. Food and Drug Regulation B.24.018 It is prohibited...

The Funny Pages - Tickle Me Elbow - The Sequel
psawyer replied to TriticusToxicum's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Gee, it is quiet here in Sillyville these days. Today is December 11, which is a most significant date indeed for Canadians. Today is the 82nd anniversary of what is, in my opinion, the most significant event in Canadian political history. It actually took place in the UK, and affected more than just Canada.
