  1. I'm not sure what you mean by "familiar with celiac." My current family doctor is fairly new to me, so I was diagnosed long before he first saw me. He is aware of it, and knows what it is, but it isn't a subject we have spent much time on. Can you elaborate a bit. Send me a PM if you don't want to publicly post the details.
  2. Happy birthday, Tiffany.
  3. I was there once. I am not there anymore. When you are at a restaurant, it is their job to prepare food according to your needs. That is what you are paying them for. They can only do this if you clearly tell them what those needs are. I have found that it makes a difference how you communicate. Most people have no idea what "gluten" is--they confuse...
  4. It comes from that classic Canadian exercise: elbow bending...
  5. Alcohol can be made from just about anything, but the distillation process creates a product that is gluten-free, even if the original grain was a gluten source. So no worries about vanilla.
  6. The message is not as clearly articulated as it could be. However, Knorr is a Unilever brand and their policy is to clearly disclose gluten sources by name if they are present. After listing the FDA eight, the following words appear: "any additional ingredients that could be considered common allergens"--this refers to barley, rye, and oats which are beyond...
  7. It will take some time for your symptoms to clear up, especially if you have had them for a long time. I felt better immediately, but it took about three months for my symptoms to completely go away. If your villous atrophy is advanced, then you may need to avoid dairy for a few weeks until the villi heal enough to resume lactase production--until they...
  8. I have had it done twice; no worries. I was sedated and have no memory of the actual procedure and there were no aftereffects other than wooziness from the sedative for a few hours.
  9. Topic titles are automatically edited to prevent "shouting," so in each word all letters except the first are converted to lower case. This sometimes results in acronyms being rendered incorrectly.
  10. There are ingredients that are always gluten-free, for example "corn starch." There are ingredients that always contain gluten, such as "barley malt." And there are many ingredients in which gluten can be hidden. It is possible for gluten to hide in flavoring, but it almost never does. Shelley Case, RD, in her book Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource...
  11. Some people, including some celiacs, have an adverse reaction to MSG, but there is no gluten to be found in MSG.
  12. What he said was that he could not guarantee that the beverages were gluten-free, and that is a pretty standard disclaimer from any company. Unless they test each and every batch, they cannot make any guarantees. the very nature of Starbucks makes testing impossible.
  13. Yes. The antibodies are triggered by ingesting gluten, and the villous atrophy is caused by the antibodies. If you stop eating gluten, you will stop producing antibodies, and your villi will begin to heal, leading to an increased likelihood of a false negative result of the biopsy.
  14. I've been distracted by other things. Lovely warm weather we've been having, not like November at all.
  15. I live in Canada, where we have had publicly funded health care for decades. It isn't perfect, but I would much rather have what we have here than what the US has. We have no for-profit HMOs that decide who gets cared for, and who doesn't, based on a profit motive. We don't worry about "pre-existing conditions." Everybody is covered to exactly the same...
  16. I have removed several posts from this topic that had nothing to do with celiac disease and were advocating an unsubstantiated and potentially dangerous "treatment" for diarrhea.
  17. OEP will clearly list gluten sources by naming the grain. If it is not listed, it is not there. Neither onions nor garlic are a source of gluten, whether dehydrated (powdered) or whole.
  18. Lest we forget. If you value your freedom, thank a veteran.
  19. Corn is safe from a purely celiac perspective. The protein in corn does not cause the autoimmune reaction of celiac disease (neither does soy). However, it is common for celiacs to have other sensitivities. Corn is not as common as casein (milk) or soy, but it does affect a number of celiac.
  20. When I was eating gluten, I had nausea and vomiting. TMI warning: skip the rest if you are squeamish. During the final years of my descent into celiac hell, vomiting was a common occurrence. You have not truly walked in my shoes until you have sat on the toilet with explosive diarrhea while simultaneously vomiting into a bucket. I have been gluten...
  21. You can always come here to vent.
  22. Kraft will clearly disclose any gluten source by name. None of the words wheat, rye, barley or oats appear in this ingredient list, so there is no gluten-derived ingredient present.
  23. This board is about celiac disease and the gluten-free diet that it requires. There are plenty of other internet forums where politics, religion and other controversial topics can be discussed. This board is not one of them. There is a Gab/Chat forum on this board, but on the rest of the board, the topics should relate to celiac disease, or the gluten...
