  1. I missed out on the rubbing of the thighs. Damn! Mine never seem to get rubbed. Let's all gather at our westernmost member's abode for a party. There's lots of food, but I fear that she may have used up most, if not all, of the scotch. Perhaps BYOB would be fitting.
  2. When I read this, my mind registered it initially as knickers across the pond--well of course they're knickers over there, aren't they? Jess sounds like she has slept it off after another exciting Saturday night on Bainbridge--who knew it was such a phun place?
  3. Hmm, GFP brownies & wine. The brownies are to die for. Sooze wants a sweet drink. Maybe a Open Original Shared Link will fill the bill. I was in the Big Easy in 1985, before my diabetic diagnosis, and can tell you that these things are wicked. If you want something sweet with a bigger kick, Open Original Shared Link Keep this one away from open...
  4. Um, I don't really do sweet drinks--they f*** up my blood sugar too much. Perhaps Grand Marnier or Tia Maria, slowly sipped from a small snifter. Or chugged straight from the bottle. Well, I suppose that it is better than having a strange body. We love you just the way you are, Susie. I'm slow to type tonight--lots of posts while...
  5. Yep, I've been kinda quiet. Cabernet Sauvignon is a good choice. In the alternative: Combine eight parts gin with one part dry vermouth in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with olives. Cheers! Minnesota? Yeah, serious winters there. My mother is from Minnesota. Judy, it will be nineteen...
  6. Generally, nothing in sprinkles has gluten. Here is a typical ingredient list: Sugar, corn starch, confectioner's glaze, Yellow #5 lake, Red #3 lake, Blue #1 lake, carnauba wax, red #40 lake, Yellow #6 lake, Blue #2 lake. "Confectioner's glaze" is made from corn protein. Some people are sensitive to those artificial colorings. Or, there may have...
  7. I don't know a lot, but they measure the extent of the damage to the villi. A score of zero represents normal villi, and four is "villi, what villi?"
  8. Wheat must be disclosed by law, but other gluten sources can hide. Here's a list of companies that have a clear gluten policy. If you don't see "wheat, rye, barley, barley malt, oats" on the labels, its not there, or hidden in "flavors, starches, etc." Open Original Shared Link This makes shopping MUCH easier. Trader Joe's has numerous locations in...
  9. I saw some improvement within a week, but my symptoms were severe, and the damage to my villi substantial. Things continued to improve over time, and I would say that things were close to "normal" after about three months. Recovery time varies based on a number of factors, including the degree of damage, the age of the patient, and the length of time the...
  10. In the Toronto area, most Loblaw stores carry a selection of gluten-free items, including Bob's Red Mill.
  11. Old news. The acquisition was announced in October 2007, and was completed shortly thereafter.
  12. Hello, neighbour, I live in Unionville and own a business in North Toronto. Some of us react to skin contact. Most of those are people who have or have had DH as a symptom. Ingested gluten is a concern for us all. Some of us appear to be more tolerant to small amounts, but this my be just an illusion--reactions vary. Shampoo is a concern because...
  13. There are a lot of cat litter products in the marketplace today. I don't know them all. Most are gluten-free. None that I am aware of contain soy or rice. The most common litters, both clumping and conventional, are natural clay. Avoid Swheat Scoop. It is made from wheat. There is also at least one litter made from barley. World's Best Cat Litter...
  14. If you are looking for a canned food, many (but not all) of the Open Original Shared Link formulas meet your requirements. Stick to the ones with the "grain-free" yellow triangle mark on the label. Open Original Shared Link make two "Limited Ingredient Diet" canned formulas. Scroll down to see ingredients. These are both completely grain-free.
  15. I'm sure that there are others, but here are a couple. Open Original Shared Link match those criteria. If you click on the Open Original Shared Link you can click on the bags to see the details, including ingredient lists. All ingredients in these formulas except the acai berries are from US sources and, where applicable, are USDA inspected. Open Original...
  16. There are two reasons. First, celiacs with intestinal damage usually have lactose intolerance. This is because lactase, the enzyme needed to digest lactose, is produced in the villi. Until the villi have recovered, an intolerance to lactose (milk sugar) is common. In most cases, it is temporary and goes away when the villi regenerate. Second, a large...
  17. Oat flour, unless specially grown and processed, is not considered to be gluten-free.
  18. The usage I intended was a term used by health care workers, and is a shortening of prescription. But your interpretation could be phun. Good morning, all.
  19. I can't speak to China Lily, but VH is gluten-free and is widely available in Canada. We have been using VH since my diagnosis mid-2000.
  20. I don't have any specific expertise, but my guess is that it is possible, or even probable. Many oral meds are designed to be slowly absorbed in the small intestine. In that case, damaged villi would certainly be a factor causing malabsorption. Other meds are faster acting and are absorbed through the stomach lining--these would not be affected.
  21. Ah, well, yes. Now, aspirin can irritate the stomach, as can ibuprofen. Acetaminophen (paracetamol to you, Nikki) can be hard on the liver. I've got it: Rum & coke codeine! Oh, wait, you need a script for one of those. Substitute a dry red wine for the rum if you prefer. Use as directed desired.
  22. Some celiacs can tolerate oats, and some can't. Quaker's oats are notorious for very high levels of cross-contamination with wheat, sometimes testing over 1000 ppm. To produce oats that are not contaminated requires special handling all the way from the growing field to the packaging machine, and at every step along the way. This is because ordinary oats...
  23. It is Good Friday. My SIL said on the book, So, it is Good Friday, and this year it falls during Passover. Will I go straight to H*ll if I eat a bacon double cheeseburger? Manda, it is good to hear that John is rid if his stones. His GALL stones, you psilly! Emily, good news about the Wildcats, and about your dad, too. Pass the wine...
