ARCHIVED Kinnikinnick...hope This Isn't A Trend...
psawyer replied to NorthernElf's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
And sometimes both happen at once. There is a line of products of which I am very aware, where the package was redesigned recently. The old package was four pounds. The "new, improved" package is three pounds, but the price went up by two dollars at the same time. This is not a gluten-free specialty food, BTW. -

Ottawa is just across the Ottawa River from Kay-beck. The federal government is a major employer in the region, and to work for them you pretty much have to be fluent in both languages. I am originally from Ottawa, and learned French as a child, but we moved to Toronto in 1960, and for six years I did not use it at all. Then six years of it in school... -

Most women I know would be flattered to be mistaken for someone younger. Mind you, I am past associating with the many underage women who are trying to sneak past the doorman at a nightclub. Those girls want to look older than they are. This quickly passes once they actually are of legal age. Jess, you don't look like you are half-way to eighty, much... -
ARCHIVED Icing Sugar Inquiries
psawyer replied to Ew...Gluten.'s topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Icing sugar can contain a small percentage of starch. All manufacturers in Canada (there are only three) use corn starch. I can't speak for US manufacturers, but under FALCPA, in effect now for more than three years, *any* wheat derived ingredients must be explicitly declared as "wheat." I would not worry about icing sugar. -

ARCHIVED Husband Trying To Quit Smoking
psawyer replied to Roda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
They say that there is no zealot like a convert, so here comes the view of a former smoker. Nicotine is addictive. Some say that is is more so than heroin. I quit for good in 1990. The cravings lasted for at least two years, but are gone. I will never go back. I made up my mind, and went through the withdrawal cold turkey. Lots of people had told... -

The rain is just coming down, and the temperature is hovering around freezing. Yuccch. I'm gonna stay indoors for the night. A quiet night in sounds comforting. I've got some cheese and I suppose that Jess has some red wine to complement it. PARTY! Um, Jess, no tapioca tonight, eh? -

ARCHIVED Do I Have To Check Cheese>?
psawyer replied to UnhappyCoeliac's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Plain cheese is gluten-free. Check products which are not pure cheese, such as cheese sauces, cheese spreads, and cheese that has been flavored or seasoned. There has been some discussion here from time to time about bleu cheese and similar cheeses, as the mold strain could have originated on a starter which contained gluten. Today, almost all producers... -

Hmmm. Is "being in heat" in any way related to "having the hots?" The heat wave is subsiding. It is down to 5oC, and tomorrow will not reach double digits. ARCHIVED Gluten Free Diet Not Working Help!
psawyer replied to bonnarooski's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hello, and welcome. You didn't say what his symptoms were, so I am guessing a bit here. Lactose intolerance symptoms can be similar to some celiac symptoms. This can be temporary, as lactase, the enzyme to digest lactose, is produced in the villi. When the villi heal, lactase is again produced, but it may be useful to avoid most dairy products for the... -
