ARCHIVED Anyone Here Allergic To Cats?
psawyer replied to Armae's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
So much depends on your individual sensitivity level. Responses differ. I test as allergic to cats, and years ago I would develop a reaction when exposed. I underwent sensitization therapy via injections many, may years ago, and it helped with some of my seasonal environmental allergies. That therapy did not include cats. A stray cat adopted us... -

We buy Bob's Red Mill--it is already rinsed. When making it, the secret that we have found is in choosing the liquids. You add one part whole quinoa to two parts liquid, then bring to a boil and simmer for about 15 minutes. Plain water works from a physical perspective, but the result is rather bland. To enhance the flavoUr, use something other than... -

Um, no, you would be thinking of Oliver, our 13-yo. Others, in order of birth, are Becky, Caramel, Tuppence and Riley. Um, Amanda, um, need greefacedguy emoticon here, phor shur! -
Malt is a "red flag" because if the source is not specified it is usually barley, which is a source of gluten. When the source is specified, as in "rice malt" then you can consider the source to decide whether it is a source of gluten. Rice, whether malted or not, is not a source of gluten and is safe for celiacs (unless another reason exists to avoid rice...

Um, the time is ticking down on the reign of our incumbent monarch. Metaphorically, the ticking of my clock represents the ebbing power of the current inhabitant of the psilly throne. A Open Original Shared Link is a bird. I don't know if there are any in California. We have a clock that sings the song of a bird on the hour, with a different bird for... -
ARCHIVED 4 Out Of The 5 Are Celiac?
psawyer replied to ThePhilly's's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Whether to do a biopsy or not, when there are clear positive results to the blood test, is a topic of much discussion. An endoscopic examination can look for possible other conditions besides celiac disease that may be contributing. But if the celiac disease is in early stages, there may not (yet) be enough damage to the villi for it to be detected. ... -

Cluck. Cluck. Me a chicken? So good to see Curly Lisa posting again, and about a psilly psubject. I can hear my clock. Tick. Tick. Tick. In about fifteen minutes it will burst into song, emulating a nuthatch. A new monarch will take longer, methinks. -
I don't have any suggestions for spaghetti sauce; I don't have a problem with tomatoes. For tacos, look into Old El Paso sauces and seasoning mixes. OEP is a General Mills brand. They will clearly identify any gluten source in the ingredient list, so you don't have to worry about hidden gluten. We use the regular taco seasoning mix frequently. There are...

ARCHIVED Gluten Spill Clean Up?
psawyer replied to quietmorning01's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Utensils of non-porous materials that are NOT scratched can be cleaned. Non-stick cookware that has not been damaged through the use of metal utensils should not have scratches. Never use metal utensils on non-stick cookware, BTW. Wood spoons and wood cutting boards are impossible to clean. So are sieves and toasters. Those items warrant unconditional... -
ARCHIVED What Should I Have Said Differently?
psawyer replied to Hummingbird4's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
While it is rare, the natural flavor could hide gluten (but not wheat). The most common offender in flavor is barley malt, which is a sweetener--I don't imagine that broth would be sweetened. The other ingredients are definitely gluten-free. But geez, Louise, I don't know how to respond to her. This is obviously a tense situation, and what is needed... -

We have him on Lantus twice daily, but at a conservative dose for now. The protocol calls for an initial dose of 0.25u/kg BID, which would call for 2.5u BID, but we have him on 2.0u BID. Janice (DVM) wants to keep him there until he is finished his course of ABX for the bladder infection. Lantus is absorbed at roughly twice the rate in cats that it is in... -
An allergy is usually to a specific form of gluten, most commonly wheat. An allergy is different from gluten intolerance, and the two are independent. You can have one, or the other, or both. An allergic response is rapid and is generally in the form of skin reaction or respiratory distress. Anaphylaxis can occur, which is immediately life-threatening...

I have heard that you can get urine extracts from certain large predators to use as a deterrent. This is the first that I have heard that "hubby pee" would be in that grouping. I thought that it referred to to the output of creatures such as wolves and panthers. Panther piss was reportedly quite effective, and thus in demand. I've been looking into treatment... -

ARCHIVED What Products Do You Have To Check Ingredients Of?
psawyer replied to HelpinOhio's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Toothpaste needs to be gluten-free, but that is easy. Crest and Colgate are gluten-free in all their versions, as far as I know. Shampoo and conditioner have been issues for many people. You don't intentionally put it in your mouth, but inevitably with so much in close proximity, some is going to get in. I would put shaving cream in the same category.... -
