  1. If it is wheat, it must be labeled as "wheat maltodextrin." This is not new. Here is the relevant code:
  2. Yep. Glutamic acid occurs in some amount in just about everything that has protein. It is one of the 20 amino acids that comprise all proteins. To completely avoid glutamates (glutamic acid) eat a diet with absolutely no protein in it. You'll die of malnutrition, of course, but you won't get any MSG.
  3. This exercise may create awareness of something that may or may not be a problem. But changing your behavior for one hour, once a year, makes no difference in fuel consumption on a daily worldwide basis.
  4. Well, sort of. We turned off some lights that are normally on at that time. We were eating dinner as the hour started, and so we lit candles and turned off the lights. Instead of having our power company burn fossil fuel to make electricity to power our lamps, we burned fossil fuel candles right in our own dining room.

    ARCHIVED Caesar's Palace

I can't help directly, but you may want to send a PM to broncobux, who is a member here. Chris lives and works in Las Vegas, and knows a lot about safe places to eat. He is not here every day, and so may not see this question unless you bring it to his attention. I am sure he will respond if you ask him. He has helped others with similar questions in the...
  6. The Kellogg products are definitely off limits for us. There are rice crisp cereals and cereals which are flakes made from corn which are safe. Look in the organic products section at your store, since most of these cereals that do not use barley malt as a sweetener are organic. Expect to pay more than you would for the trademarked Kellogg products, but they...
  7. Jeez, Louise, the questions we deal with here. The Canadian Oxford Dictionary, 2ed, lists all three of those (in alphabetical order, so shat comes first, then sh!t, and finally sh!tted). Yes, that's right, the Oxford dictionary, and it's Canadian version, includes all those words you can't say on television. It labels this one as coarse slang, and...
  8. Good morning, all! It think he means Open Original Shared Link. Jokes about having the worst seat in the ball park were park of his shtick. Another cold day here, but tomorrow it is expected to warm up and stay warm for several days. Meltdown, here we come.
  9. Yeah, it sucks. Barley is not covered by the law, so it can still be hidden as "malt flavor" among other things.
  10. The name mycotoxin implies certain properties. Ask a pharmacist, "What is the difference between a nutrient, a drug, and a toxin?" The answer will be, "Dosage." Many things that are essential nutrients in our diet are also toxins if consumed in sufficient amounts. Iodine is toxic in certain amounts, but is an essential nutrient to the thyroid. Potassium...
  11. Emily is going out tonight. Emily has a social life. Who knew? Sarah's phire is losing strength. Hmm. I don't think that sounds like what I mean, that is, oh darn, just phorget it. Sarah, I do hope things are looking up phor you and your phamily. Ptaum, as your second reign nears the end, and we await your successor, do you have any phinal royal...
  12. Soy does not contain gluten, although many of us are also intolerant to soy (I don't have a problem myself). Gluten is found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. "Corn gluten" refers to the protein in corn, and is not gluten in the sense that we use the word, but is scientifically correct. We use the word to refer collectively, to the plant proteins that provoke...
  13. Hershey's policy of gluten disclosure has come into question lately. They have been giving equivocal answers to questions, and are sometimes saying that they don't know whether their products contain gluten. This might just be a CYA strategy, but a number of members here no longer trust their ingredient lists and no longer consume Hershey products.
  14. Sarah, I see you reading. How are things going with the fire? In consideration of all this, setting a firm date of Monday makes sense. Monday is the day. Plan for it, and be ready for Monday's change. Plan to do things to keep yourself busy. Plan to avoid things that are associative with a smoke. For me, it was beverages. A coffee and a cigarette. Something...
  15. Oh, jeez, Sarah, this is not what you need right now.
  16. Not all wild bird food blends have grain in them, but expect to pay more for one that is grain-free. There is always a cross-contamination risk with products of this nature. gfgypsyqueen, you didn't say which type of nuts you are avoiding. Tree nuts are very rarely found in these products, but peanuts (a tuber, not a true nut) are very common. Even so...
  17. Sarah, be strong. You can do this. I quit cold turkey. No patches. No gum. I decided to do it, and I did it. You can too. I'm really pulling for you on this one. Come join me in the non-smoking world. It is better here in so many ways.
  18. Welcome to the board. There is certainly not a clear line between celiac disease and gluten sensitivity. If you have celiac disease then you are intolerant to gluten. Some believe that celiac is a spectrum disorder, with varying degrees. Others believe that the intestinal damage presented in celiac disease is just one possible symptom of the underlying...
  19. That you have it is not a surprise to me. In my pre-diagnosis period there were times when it seemed like I lived on the potty. Having one in such a convenient place would have been wonderful. But then, I think, having it is one thing, but actually using it would be another thing altogether. It makes me think of the chamber pots that were common in the...
  20. My time as a smoker was long before my diagnosis of celiac disease. Manufactured cigarettes are not a gluten source as far as I know, but there could be an exception somewhere. I am not suggesting that smoking is a good thing, I'm only commenting on the gluten concern. If you are rolling your own, some (but certainly not all) papers have gluten...
  21. I can't speak for Tom, or the long lost Richard, but having been married for over 26 years, I have been the close-quarters observer for well over 300 periods. I understand a visit from Aunt Flo. And PMS, well, I'm just not going there.
  22. Kelly, please look at your PMs (personal messages). I do think think that poster was trying to be helpful.
  23. Good morning! A mix of snow and rain tomorrow, but it will be above freezing so I expect mostly rain. Two dry days, and then indeterminate precipitation again on Thursday. Friday promises 6oC and rain. Toronto is still shy of the record, but I'm not sure just how much they need to catch up. We don't expect sustained above-freezing temperatures...
  24. I have not been to either of Disney World or Disneyland since adopting the gluten-free lifestyle, but I have heard that both are very accommodating. It may take a while for you to get over the desire for foods that contain gluten. If you keep trying them, and keep reacting, you will realize that it is just not worth it. It will also take some time for...
  25. Well put, Tiffany. I don't know if I would have the nerve to actually say it while keeping my voice calm and sincere. I nearly did kill myself by eating gluten while not knowing why I was so sick.
