ARCHIVED gluten-free Godiva?
psawyer replied to Adare's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This is Godiva's standard answer to any question containing the phrase "gluten-free." They will not give an affirmative answer to any question asking about "gluten-free" products. They buy ingredients from other companies, and they do not have absolute control over them. Because of this, they can not give a guarantee that anything they make is gluten-free... -
For anyone in Canada, VH soy sauce is gluten-free. It is widely available in grocery stores at a price comparable to other soy sauces, but it is only sold in Canada.

ARCHIVED Can Someone Define "clearly List All Gluten"?
psawyer replied to FootballFanatic's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This means that the gluten-containing grain will be listed by its common name. Look for the specific words: Wheat, Rye, Barley or Oats. If malt is listed, it should say something like "malt flavor (barley)" or similar words. No obscure terms to look for--the grain will be obvious. If none of the grains we care about are listed by name, then the product... -
Injections are not a source of concern. The last thing you want in an injectable medicine is something to gum of the needle, which is exactly what gluten would do.

I am still seeing cases where I click on the button for last unread and it takes me to the first post in the thread, even though I have read that post, and others in the same thread. I don't think this is a cookie problem. Before the software change, the board remembered what I had read (and not read) even if I moved to another machine (we have three, although...

ARCHIVED These Ingredients Are So Hard To Understand
psawyer replied to Aj63's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There are quite a number of companies/brands that have a policy of clearly disclosing gluten in their ingredients. If the maker of the food is one of these, then if you don't see a gluten grain listed, the product is safe. With these brands, you don't need to worry about things like "natural flavor" or "modified food starch." If it contains gluten, the gluten... -
Oh, well, I thought it might help. Yes, if you delete the cookies set by the board, you will sign yourself out--your sign-in status is kept in a cookie. The unread status is not just kept in cookies--I use more than one computer to access the board, and until the recent problem, the history of what I had read was common to all of them, meaning it...

100% gluten free is a dream. No facility can be guaranteed to be 100% gluten free. Varying levels of cleanliness do exist, but even facilities which do not intentionally process wheat on the premises are subject to possible contamination of ingredients from an outside source. As well, employees and other personnel who enter the premises may not intentionally...

Scott put an upgrade on the board software on Friday the 12th. Since then, there have been problems with this function, mostly things not showing as unread. Another update was applied a couple of days ago, but a side effect seems to be that many threads that you have read part of are now showing up as completely new. It will take some time for the...

ARCHIVED Campbells Soup?
psawyer replied to rachellek's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Campbells have a policy that they will clearly label gluten in the ingredients list. If you don't see a gluten grain named, then the product is safe. Formulas do differ between Canada and the US. In Canada, the condensed chicken and rice soup is gluten-free. I don't know about its status in the US. -

ARCHIVED Do You Take Communion?
psawyer replied to dandelionmom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This topic has been discussed many times and often with controversy. Different Christian churches have different faiths on the requirements for a valid host. The Roman Catholic Church requires that it contain wheat. Some other Christian denominations have a different belief. According to Catholic teaching, you can receive the Lord's supper in either form... -
I see as your avatar a photo of your holding a dog. If you aren't seeing it you may need to force your browser to refresh its copy by doing a reload while viewing one of your posts. No matter what you load as your avatar, the file name on here is always the same, so browsers may have something in cache and may not know that the content of the file has...

ARCHIVED Phenylephrine Hcl
psawyer replied to Rick45's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You may be reacting to the Phenylephrine HCl itself. It is a vasoconstrictor which has an effect on the entire body when taken orally. As the blood vessels tighten up, your blood pressure rises, and a stimulant action also occurs. -
Lipton Onion Soup Mix gluten-free?
psawyer replied to ebrbetty's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes, it's gluten-free. Lipton has a clear disclosure policy on gluten, so if you don't see it on the label, it's not there. Caramel color, at least in North America, is not something we need to worry about, in any case. -
ARCHIVED Cronic Ear Infections
psawyer replied to raegansmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Welcome to our mutual support community here at celiac.com Very, very few pharmaceutical products contain wheat (or other gluten sources). Injectable medicine is always safe--gluten would gum up the syringe and cause clumping in the liquid. Most oral tablet medications use corn starch as the binder. If capsules need a binding agent in their content... -
Open Original Shared Link is a rash which has eruptions and extreme itching. The skin is inflamed. It is similar to Open Original Shared Link. Discoloration alone is not either condition. Not all celiacs have DH--I didn't, although I did have what was diagnosed as eczema as a child. Click on either condition name to see a description of it.

My last visit is shown as October 11 (Thursday) at 10:45 pm EDT. I have been and gone many, many times since, using two different computers for access. Sometimes it has lagged, but if I switched to the other computer it always caught up. I just reconnected from my laptop; my previous use was about 2 hours ago on the desktop. In the past it would say my last...

Two possible meanings, as used here: Dermatitis Herpetiformis -an autoimmune skin rash triggered by gluten. Some say it is a distinct disease, but most here consider just a another symptom of celiac disease. And, as with any web discussion, DH can mean "Dear Husband." DD and DS refer to daughter and son respectively.

I have never seen salt with dextrose listed as an ingredient. Dextrose is another name for glucose, a simple sugar which is the fuel our brains and other cells run on. Table salt that I have seen is composed of sodium chloride (NaCl) with minute amounts of sodium iodide (NaI). Nothing else. No sugar added. No corn. The iodine is from the sodium iodide...

ARCHIVED Is My 3 Year Old Daughter A Celiac?
psawyer replied to akflboyd's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Let's talk about autoimmune diseases and triggers for a moment. I have Type 1 Diabetes. It is similar in many ways to celiac disease. There are genetic factors, but not everyone with the genes develops the disease. I was born in 1954. I have the same genes today that I had then. I have never been the recipient of a blood transfusion or organ transplant... -
ARCHIVED Came Here For Son, But Am I Celiac Too?
psawyer replied to missquarejane's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The symptoms that you have described are consistent with celiac disease, but are not exclusive to celiac. Most doctors like to see "definitive" evidence. The biopsy showing villous atrophy is definitive. Positive blood results, especially tTG, are very specific. Those tests look for the reaction to gluten exposure, so the subject must be eating gluten... -
Keep in mind that for any regulation or law to be useful, it must be enforceable. To enforce it, you must be able to verify compliance. This means a scientific test for the presence of the substance. The total absence of a substance can never be proven. As the test becomes more sensitive, the cost of it becomes more expensive. 0.1 ppm is an extremely...

I just came back, and of three pages of threads shown by "View New Posts" there seem to be nine that don't have the button, even though the time of the last post is this morning and I haven't been here since yesterday.
