  1. We tried a few alternative macaroni and cheese products, but are happiest when we make it ourselves. We use Glutino macaroni, Kraft grated cheddar cheese product (it says "Cracker Barrel" on the shaker), and butter. For one full box of the Glutino macaroni, we use 1/3 of a cup of the cheese powder and 4 tsp (20 ml) of butter. For a more liquid sauce, we...
  2. Wine is not something I worry about. It is made from grapes, and there is no reason to add anything with gluten to it. In some cases there may be a concern with casein being used in the filtering. I don't have a problem with casein (milk protein). I just simply consider wine to be safe.
  3. "We cannot guarantee" is a classic CYA disclaimer. It they buy anything from a third party, without actually testing it themselves, then of course they "cannot guarantee" anything. The reference to the "alcohol portion of the natural flavor system" is, in my opinion, another CYA issue. It is generally accepted by celiac experts that alcohol is gluten-free...
  4. I'm not a big drinker of vodka, but I do know that Smirnoff is made from USA-grown corn. Edit: the image in my avatar is a traditional martini, made with Beefeater gin and Martini & Rossi vermouth. No "vodkatinis" here.
  5. Lisa, please check your personal messages.
  6. Moved to the support groups area.
  7. Tiffany, my thinking here was that if you have ruled out casein as the issue, then what remains is lactose. There may be a small amount of lactose remaining in the cheese, and it will vary significantly among different types of cheese, but there is a large casein content in all cheeses.
  8. Yes, I would talk to them. Outback is celiac friendly. Did your friend also have a reaction? As celiacs, when we have a bad reaction to food, our instinctive thought is to blame gluten. But, sometimes there is another cause. There are some foods that I react to in a similar manner, but which have no gluten at all in them. If I eat Kraft Zesty Italian salad...
  9. The actual prime rib itself is gluten-free. But the seasonings rubbed onto the outside during cooking may not be. The "au jus" is dangerous. It may have gluten from a number of sources. I just don't take the chance, even though I used to love prime rib. I now stick to steak, and if the restaurant isn't one that is celiac-savvy, I ask for it completely...
  10. Gluten is not absorbed through the skin. However... When a child touches something containing gluten, they may very well put their hand or fingers in their mouth without thoroughly washing them first. Shampoos and other hair care products can get onto the face and be unintentionally ingested through the mouth. Soap could be a special issue, since...
  11. Bick's is a Canadian brand that has been owned since at least 2005 by Smucker's. Smucker's has a policy that they will clearly disclose any gluten in their products. I would expect that by now the labelling for Bick's complies with that policy. Prior to the takeover, Bick's was part of Robin Hood Multifoods. Smucker's bought them, and then sold off most...
  12. If you react to skim milk, but not to cheese, that indicates a lactose issue. Both contain casein, and if you react to whey it is generally the casein in the whey. If you tolerate the cheese without problems, then that shows that casein is okay for you. Liquid skim milk contains lactose as well as casein.
  13. I quit for good in April of 1990. My onset of major celiac symptoms came in the summer of 1995, although I had had gastric problems off and on for 25 years before that. In my case, I don't think there is a connection between my smoking and the onset of celiac, as there is a five year difference between the them. But there are studies that suggest that smoking...
  14. Annato is gluten-free, dairy-free and suitable for a vegan diet. It comes from a non-grain plant source.
  15. Have a good trip. I'll "see" you again in August.
  16. It may have gotten a grin, perhaps, but it certainly was not useless information. I know several people who have been there and have found their way back. Your story may help others here. Thank you for telling it.
  17. Again, thanks all. Dinner was wonderful. We went to a celiac-friendly steak and seafood place near us (The Keg, for any Canadians wondering). It is so nice to have so many friends all over. My mother was born in Minnesota and raised in California, and she wanted to have a "Fourth of July" baby. She was in labor for most the of the third, but managed...
  18. Thanks, everyone for the kind thoughts. It has been a pretty good day so far, and shortly Jacquie will be taking me out for dinner.
  19. There are two possible results to the biopsy: Positive and inconclusive. There is no "negative" for at least a couple of reasons. The biopsy takes a tissue sample. It does not test every bit of tissue in the intestine. Although multiple samples may be taken, the fact that none of the samples show damage may simply mean that the samples missed it. Go...
  20. I have Windows XP on two machines, and use FireFox as my browser. It is enough for me to click the "reload" button on the tool bar to resolve any "stale" avatars. A visual clue that the image is wrong is if it looks distorted. When the avatar changes, FireFox picks up the new dimensions and then distorts the old image to fit them.
  21. Lawry's is a Unilever brand and they do have a gluten disclosure policy. Can you please provide the details about what is wrong with the product, and the source of your information. I am not saying that you are wrong, but "something someone posted" is too vague to follow up. I use Lawry's seasoned salt regularly, and have never had a problem.
  22. As usual, I'm late to arrive at the party. Happy birthday, Donna! Seven, huh? Like, maybe I'll be three next week? JK.
  23. What they can guarantee is that their @$$ is securely covered by this disclaimer. In my opinion, that's all it is: a CYA statement.
  24. Untreated celiac disease means malabsorption. Deficiencies in many nutrients is the result. Some of these deficiencies cause neurological symptoms. These include migraines and brain fog. Folic acid and B12 deficiencies can contribute to seizures which are simliar to epilepsy. The confusion which follows that can be very troublesome, while you try to convince...
  25. My understanding, and this has been discussed at length here some time ago, is that celiac is a disqualifying condition. You don't get into the military, and if you are already there, you get an immediate medical discharge. Jail food, hmm, I guess if you wait long enough every possible topic will come up on this discussion forum...
