  1. Jerry, those pix are awesome!
  2. Corn syrup, whether high fructose or not, is made from corn and is gluten-free.
  3. The word "gluten" literally means grain protein. In theory it can refer to any cereal protein. We normally use it to mean four specific grain proteins: wheat, rye, barley and oats. The first three definitely trigger the celiac autoimmune reaction. Oat protein is not so clear, but most celiacs avoid it. Most oats are contaminated with wheat, and so contain...
  4. Some people, including some celiacs, are allergic to, or intolerant to, corn. Corn does not contain a protein that triggers the celiac auto-immune reaction, so it is safe from a celiac point of view. Soy is another food to which many people are allergic or intolerant. But again, this is a different issue than celiac disease. I am allergic to crustacean...
  5. To the question of "other" smoke, if you are referring to marijuana, it is an herb, not a grain, and so the pure stuff would not contain gluten. But unless you grow your own, there may have been other things added somewhere along the supply chain. It is also possible, but not likely, that there could be a gluten source hidden in the rolling paper. This...
  6. It is generally accepted that distilled alcohol (and vinegar) does not contain gluten, regardless of the original souce. The distillation process removes any gluten because the large gluten molecule is too big to pass into the distillate. In the US, "vinegar" when described by that single word, is both distilled and derived from a non-gluten source, so...
  7. The sodas made by the Coca-Cola company and by Pepsi are gluten-free. Caramel coloring is not something you need to worry about. Not every product from these companies is gluten-free, but the carbonated beverages are safe.
  8. This is probably a CYA statement. If they obtain ingredients from another source, or even for reasons associated with internal processes, most companies will now say that they "cannot guarantee" or "cannot be certain" that the product is gluten-free. Colgate used to say that they were gluten-free. I use Colgate, and have for years. No problems. Too many lawyers...
  9. Well, this is an old memory. I don't know if this is gluten-free. I remember this toffee from my childhood decades ago. Perhaps somebody with current knowledge will post.
  10. Peace, everybody. Let's call this topic done.
  11. This is not the place to debate the ethics of the morning-after pill. We are not here to judge.
  12. We're straying from the original question. She asked for information related to gluten intolerance, not for us to judge her or the product in question. Let's keep to the original topic, please.
  13. To add to what Momma Goose said, butter itself is gluten-free. At Outback, the butter they use on baked potatoes (and on the bread platter, FWIW) is plain butter, no problem. On the other hand, the butter they use on the vegetables is seasoned butter, and contains gluten. Ask for your veggies without butter, but the stuff on your tater is ok.
  14. "Vinegar," when listed as just that one word as an ingredient, is distilled and therefore safe. Some vinegar is malted rather than distilled, but it will be clearly labeled as "malt vinegar." Malt vinegar is not safe for celiacs. If you are buying vinegar as a product, white vinegar, wine vinegar and apple cider vinegar are safe, but make sure you are...
  15. As usual, I'm late to the party. Never mind. Hope you had a great birthday, Laura!
  16. No, I've never been there, although I have driven past it many times. It is about 4 km (2.5 miles) west of where I live, on the SW corner of Woodbine and Hwy 7. I'll have to give it a closer look.
  17. I have had an endoscopy, but it was combined with a colonoscopy at the same time. I'm not sure how much of the colonoscopy protocol is needed if you are just having the endo. For the double scope, you need to purge your digestive tract. You stop eating solid food and limit yourself to clear fluids for 24 hours, then take a deliberate overdose of laxatives...
  18. Welcome back, Molly.
  19. Amanda, thank you for that link. Wegman's raise some very valid concerns. I used to shop at Wegman's from time to time, when my family owned a vacation home in the finger lakes region of New York. I always liked their stores and customer-oriented attitude. I haven't been there in a couple of years, though. Like the Canadian rules, this is not about...
  20. There has been some discussion about this. Tiffany (tarnalberry) said it best here: Open Original Shared Link As long as there is a rule, there will be a threshold based upon testing capability. A negative can not be proven; there is no test that accurate.
  21. Have a wonderful day, Molly. Many happy returns.
  22. I found this at the bottom of the page, seemingly overlooked. I don't know anything regarding the answer, but am pinning the topic in case someone else can help.
  23. This post seems to have fallen into a black hole; I just found it and am pinning it now.
  24. Here in Ontario, it is available at selected LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario) outlets. As time goes by, more and more of them seem to be carrying it. Originally I had to drive to the next town west of me, but now it is available at my nearest government store. If your local LCBO does not stock it, they can order it for you. Ask at the "customer service...
  25. My thoughts continue to be with you and Hazel. I am hoping and praying that this comes to a happy ending.
