  1. Desperate parents will try anything, I know I just hate to see people restricting diets so much without a clear reason and scientific testing first to rule things out. It's hard to get people to comply with these diets with no back up (from the patient to the families to the schools). Soy is going to be the big one. If they do decide to pull everything...
  2. Intolerance testing leaves much to be desired. Why did they test to begin with? That diet is what we have followed with a few more. It's about cooking a lot at home but its manageable for sure. Again, without knowing why they tested though, I would bet a few/most of them aren't an issue really.
  3. It's genetic. If you have it (based on blood AND biopsy) and your kid tests positive on the blood work, most Dr's will say that's enough for a diagnosis. Why don't you have symptoms? Luck? Other issues masking it? No one knows. What you do know is that you need to be gluten-free for life. My DS was tested because he had a Vit. D level of 0 (zero, literally...
  4. There are plenty of kids allergic to nuts so perhaps keep that in mind when going to play dates!
  5. Depending on where you live, it could be weather related. My DD's eczema gets bad from about now till March/April. Slather him up in a GOOD cream after a warm bath and you may stop it from progressing. That said, it's recommended that any blood relatives be tested every 3 years OR if they exhibit signs. It may be something to consider to have a baseline...
  6. Yes. That's true. But I have had the shoe rule forever
  7. I say this "Did you wash your hands yet? You can use the bathroom or the kitchen." And I watch them till they go do it. To every person who comes in my house every time they come into my house. And they leave shoes at the door too. Why would I want the shoes you walk around in public with all day every day on the floor when I walk with no socks on...
  8. Glad you have the Epis! Be sure you always carry BOTH with you at all times!!! And OAS is very common for those with pollen/seasonal/outdoor allergies. Just a note on the peanut thing is that peanuts tend to cross react with birch trees so if your EA's are that server, it could account for the peanut showing up positive but you could actually eat them...
  9. Just a note but if you had been eating it for years with no reaction then you aren't allergic. It is NOT recommended that Dr's diagnosis an allergy on testing alone because of the hight rate of false positives. Now a person CAN develop an allergy at any time but if you weren't having reactions, it's doubtful that you are truly allergic. Did the Dr. prescribe...
  10. As I said, it should not have been said. My child also has deadly allergies to several things (dairy, egg, peanut and tree nut) as well as Celiac. I treat them equally. His school plan deals with both. They both qualify for ADA accommodations. No one is lucky when they have to deal with watching every single thing that comes into his/her body. The OP's feelings...
  11. Thank you!
  12. Is something she said incorrect? Are you on a gluten-free diet? If so, it is't going to kill you so what she said is FACTUALLY correct. Is it in good taste? No. Should she try and one up you? No. I would perhaps tell her that you understand the differences but that it hurts your feelings. THAT is the key here, that your feelings were hurt not "what...
  13. Be mindful that allergy results are very often inaccurate. I would not suggest (and a GOOD Dr. should not either) testing for anything other than milk because of the high false positive rates. Also, some kids have very reactive skin and it isn't a good indicator for skin testing esp. those with eczema.
  14. lol So I'm an expert in something after all Just wish this wasn't it just like all you hear being Celiac experts right?
  15. Yes, that's true. The current recommendation is that unless there is a KNOWN reaction, testing not be conducted. A rash around the mouth would not be considered a reaction.
  16. If the only thing she has is a red rash around her mouth, I would not leap to an allergy. Are her diapers okay? Any swelling? Vomiting? Those would be signs of a true allergy (IgE mediated). It may be an intolerance though those signs are usually GI in nature. I would be VERY reluctant to do allergy testing at all. They are notoriously INACCURATE and...
  17. Have you changed detergents or soap lately? Thats what I would think. If your ped doesn't know get a referral for sure!
  18. Do you have Epi pens? I would seriously ask about an in office food challenge before I would do more testing. It's the ONLY 100% accurate way to diagnose and they are prepared for a reaction should one occur. African Queen- Oh my! Poor kiddo I am so sorry you had to deal with that.
  19. I have a kid with life threatening food allergies on top of Celiac. He was a finger sucker till he was 5. I KNOW that these kids find in the strangest of places!!!!! lol We were always on him because of the finger sucking esp. Wet Ones are moist wipe much like a baby wipe but does a better job at removing "junk" when you can't wash. I buy them by...
  20. Why did you test her to begin with? Testing in the absence of a known reaction is NOT recommended because of the high rate of false positives for both skin and blood testing. A negative allergy result is however 90%+ accurate. Unless you saw a reaction to something, I wouldn't have even done the first round let alone any more.
  21. Baby wipes aren't ideal. They contain emollients that just squish the protein around. This is my choice list: 1) Soap and water 2) Wet-Ones 3) Not eating till we find soap and water
  22. I think people think it's all or nothing is the thing. They don't get that there is a "spectrum" of food issues so to speak. That said, standard AND alternative testing for allergies and intolerances is really really really scientifically sketchy at best and quackery at worst. I would trust someone saying "it doesn't agree with me" over some of the alternative...
  23. It sounds like you have pretty much everything covered. I am personally in favor of 504's because it's a document that follows them up through college and this is pretty nice! If you decide you want to go the 504 route I can give you some pointers on how to start that process. Some of the other things I would clear up are: 1) Use of food containers...
  24. Get your ped to order the blood work. Be sure it's the full Celiac panel.
