ARCHIVED Help! I'm No Baker! (Pizza Crust)
sa1937 replied to krystynycole's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Pizza was one of the things I missed the most...in fact, I absolutely craved it. While I make my own crust now, some people do like to use Gluten-Free Pantry French Bread Mix for pizza. I think it would also make two pizzas. -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Chocolate Cake
sa1937 replied to JoyfulGF's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
A friend made King Arthur's and it's outstanding! Dang, now I'm hungry for chocolate cake....or at least chocolate frosting. -
If everything you ate was indeed gluten-free, I would think the possibility of cross-contamination would be huge at Golden Corral.

ARCHIVED Cereal
sa1937 replied to Debra Adkins's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Is it possible you may be lactose-intolerant (assuming you have milk on your cereal)? It's also possible that some other ingredient in cereal is bothering you. -
ARCHIVED Jules gluten-free Flour Sale
sa1937 replied to krystynycole's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
This is a good deal!!! I got that email, too, and this is definitely my favorite Jules special. I bought the last flour special so don't need any right now. -
Chamomilelover, sorry to hear you are still feeling poorly. I'm no expert at this but you might want to try going on a simple whole foods diet for awhile and skip eating any processed gluten-free foods to see if it helps. And then reintroduce your favorite processed foods one at a time. If you have no reaction, then add another one the next week and so...

The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
sa1937 replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I think you absolutely have the right idea!!! -
Simply put: We become more sensitive to trace amounts of gluten after we've been gluten-free.

ARCHIVED Supplement And Multivitamins And Otc Medication
sa1937 replied to LuckyAtlas84's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I take Culturelle Digestive Health, which is dairy-free, and it's helped a lot. Sorry I can't tell you about the others as I have no experience with them. I find Open Original Shared Link to be a valuable resource in checking drugs and OTC meds. -
ARCHIVED What's A Good Gluten Free Book For An 82-Year-Old?
sa1937 replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Living Gluten-Free for Dummies by Danna Korn might be a good book for her. -
Welcome to the forum, Emmy! Have you ever been tested for celiac? While you may not have experienced problems yet, sometimes they can show up in two or three days. If you have celiac, consuming gluten is never a good idea as damage is cumulative but I think you already know that. Perhaps you just lucked out this time.

ARCHIVED Store Bought Flour Mixes
sa1937 replied to LuckyAtlas84's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Plus she's tall and slender...sheesh! My son was like that too...a bottomless pit! Yes, OINK, OINK! I'm off to make them now. -
I don't know as I don't buy it...but I'd go with the ingredients listed on the label. The top allergens would have to be declared in the ingredient list.

ARCHIVED Store Bought Flour Mixes
sa1937 replied to LuckyAtlas84's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I haven't tried the chocolate chip cookies yet. It does makes good pancakes and waffles, too. And they also freeze well. Be careful with cross-contamination using your friend's kitchen. I use a hand-held mixer for quick breads, muffins, etc. And for muffins you can use the paper baking cup liners in a muffin pan. It's obvious I need to bake banana... -
ARCHIVED Store Bought Flour Mixes
sa1937 replied to LuckyAtlas84's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hee hee....have I really mentioned them twice this week? Must be because they are so good and that's why I can't breathe in my jeans! I get 12 regular size muffins from the batter for the banana bread and I bake them for 20 min. (they're usually done at that point but test). I also add chopped nuts to the batter. And for anyone else who's interested... -
ARCHIVED Store Bought Flour Mixes
sa1937 replied to LuckyAtlas84's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I just received a shipment of 6 bags of Pamela's Baking & Pancake Mix yesterday (6 - 24 oz. bags). The box says it expires in March 2013 so obviously it does have quite a long shelf life (unopened at least). I only open one bag at a time and have never refrigerated it and haven't had a problem. I keep it in a covered Rubbermaid container in my pantry... -
ARCHIVED I Need To Complain!
sa1937 replied to Littllemel's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
LM, I don't want to be a downer but you've been gluten-free such a short time so it's probably going to take a lot more time to feel significantly better. Personally I think our bodies can be pretty wonky at first and we can seem to react to most anything and everything. There are times I'm still trying to figure it out...and that's after two years gluten... -
While it's not Wishbone, to follow up on this: Open Original Shared Link There are a number of Hidden Valley salad dressings that are gluten-free: Open Original Shared Link

ARCHIVED I Need To Complain!
sa1937 replied to Littllemel's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm sorry you are having so many problems and hope you feel better soon. There is definitely a huge adjustment for many when they start eating gluten-free. That said, yes I do use my microwave and don't give it a second thought. I just refuse to be overly concerned about it. We really can make ourselves crazy worrying about every last thing. -
ARCHIVED gluten-free German Chocolate Cake
sa1937 replied to Stubborn red head's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
It sounds good and I hope it turns out for you. I'll be anxious to see the finished result. Two years gluten-free and I've never tried to convert a regular cake recipe. -
I really don't worry about cross contamination in my own kitchen...this is the one place I feel totally safe. I don't buy much in the way of gluten-free processed foods though. I took a lot of precautions that mamaw already mentioned, gave my kitchen a good cleaning and got rid of anything that was not gluten-free. I did not give up all grains, not that...

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Know If Hooly Farms Fresh Chicken Is Safe?
sa1937 replied to lucky28's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I agree with Richard...a lot of companies won't guarantee anything. I'd buy Holly Farms and not worry about it. We can really make ourselves crazy with this CYA stuff. -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Know If Hooly Farms Fresh Chicken Is Safe?
sa1937 replied to lucky28's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You're welcome! I think that's a change from when they went from their Food Lion brand to "My Essentials". Also, because they now promote Holly Farms with better prices, watch for mark-downs on Perdue chicken if you're lucky to be there when they've marked some down as obviously a lot of people gravitate towards Holly Farms specials. -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Know If Hooly Farms Fresh Chicken Is Safe?
sa1937 replied to lucky28's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I also shop at Food Lion and will look forward to hearing what you find out. I'm going to take a guess that the 12% chicken broth is supposed to make the chicken more juicy much like a brine would and is probably gluten-free or wouldn't it have to be declared on the label if it wasn't? Of course, injecting it with chicken broth is a whole lot cheaper than...
