ARCHIVED Switching Kitchen To Gluten-Free
sa1937 replied to TooManyHats's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I kept my 50+ year-old stainless steel measuring cups because I really like them...just scrubbed them to death to make sure they were really clean. First thing I replaced in the baking dept. were my bread pans as after tasting some nasty gluten-free bread, I decided I needed to make my own (that's before I discovered Udi's) but since that time I do occasionally... -

Just curious...did you try to grind the brown rice flour again in a blender or coffee grinder to make it finer? I did but don't know if it's any better than what I originally started with as I've not baked anything using it. Do you recommend any particular muffin or cookie recipe that turned out exceptionally well? And have you tried any of the breads... -

Coke Classic is my drink of choice! ETA: Well, actually I drink a lot of water...but will occasionally have a coke in the afternoon (like right now) -

I did toss out some (but not all) Tupperware since it was ancient and I knew I wasn't comfortable using it. I figured the bowls needed to be history as they were used for gluteny cakes, cookies, etc. Some other Tupperware storage containers I kept depending on the condition. How about non-stick pots and pans, especially if they are scratched? Mine... -
For Christmas Eve I did make the Sweet Chicken Bacon Wraps (link posted by tea-and-crumpets) and they were delicious! I used chicken breast tenders for them. PIA to make and took me twice as long as expected by everyone loved them so that made it worth it. I also made the Mushroom-Pecan Appetizers (from the Live Gluten Freely website) and that recipe...

ARCHIVED Frito Lay New Updated List

I eat Lay's, Fritos, Stax and Tostitos all the time. Guess it depends on one's sensitivity. -
ARCHIVED The Do'h I Glutened Myself Thread
sa1937 replied to Saz's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oscar Mayer is a Kraft company and they will always disclose the ingredients in a product. It is one of the companies I trust and really appreciate their good labeling. That doesn't mean you didn't react to a specific ingredient but I question whether you were glutened by the bacon. -

I bought this cookbook a few months ago and have tried the sandwich bread on page 158. I thought it was pretty tasty. As much as I am still searching for a recipe that compares to Udi's, this bread wasn't it and became toast the second day. Really good toast, too. I'm sure it would be good for a grilled sandwich or French toast, too. I want to bake another... -

Pamela's has a recipe for zucchini bread using the baking and pancake mix: Open Original Shared Link I've been meaning to try it but haven't done so yet. I do know that both the pumpkin bread and banana bread recipes turn out really well. I've made both of them a number of times. Always yummy! -

I'm outta here to make a vat of mushroom-wine sauce (gluten-free, of course) to go with the London Broil my son is going to grill. Yes, he's been thoroughly briefed on CC. Guess I can pretty easily throw together a tossed salad, too. Dinner will be simple. Not sure what else we'll have but my DIL did buy some baby red potatoes and her father always makes... -
Personally I like my Whirlpool smooth-top electric range because it's so easy to clean. I had one in my previous house, too, for about 10 years. Basic difference between the two is that I now have a convection oven, which I love and which I would consider a must-have in any range I ever bought. I do not can so that wasn't an issue for consideration. ...

I can see that would be a real problem for you. I guess I like them because I only have substantial cookware stored there so there's no chance it would fall behind the drawers. But being "old and creaky" I would find it difficult to retrieve items like that, too. My foil pans, etc. are stored in floor-to-ceiling cabinets for which I had extra shelves...

Glad to hear Simply Potatoes are gluten-free! I thought they were but I don't think I've bought any since I've gone gluten-free. Who wants to shred potatoes when you can just get them out of a bag! -

That breakfast casserole sounds like it's to die for! For me I bet it would work well using Jimmy Dean's Sausage Crumbles and Simply Potatoes hash browns (I haven't had those potatoes for a long while but if I recall correctly, I think they're gluten-free...I'd had to read the label). -

ARCHIVED New Skin Liquid Bandage - Gluten?
sa1937 replied to GypsyGirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
For as seldom as I use it, it's a product that's not even on my radar. My dentist has even used it in my mouth...and after major dental work has advised to use it mixed half with water to help my mouth heal (or another option is to rinse my mouth with salt water). -
ARCHIVED Christmas Goodies... Aiaiaiaiai

Hershey's Cocoa Powder is gluten free. It does sound good but the powdered milk would get me, too. How about using Vance's Dari-Free if you want to make instant hot chocolate? -
ARCHIVED New Skin Liquid Bandage - Gluten?
sa1937 replied to GypsyGirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't know if New Skin is safe or not, but until you hear more (let us know, too), I'd get out the hydrogen peroxide to thoroughly cleanse your wound to prevent infection and then use a Band Aid. -
ARCHIVED Christmas Goodies... Aiaiaiaiai
sa1937 replied to Rowena's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I got some lotion and lip balm from someone...no clue whether it's safe or not so I'm re-gifting it to my 12 year-old granddaughter, who loves all things smelly and lotiony. Also got a little bag of candy (either questionable or not safe) when I had my nails done yesterday. She knows I have celiac so it's the thought that counts. It will become a package... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Bisquick
sa1937 replied to BethM55's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The cake (if you can call it that) was a gummy mess. When I was making it, I questioned the amount of guar gum (2-1/2 tsp) which sounded like a lot to me. Roda also made a yellow cake from that cookbook the same day and hers went straight into the trash, too. Posted under the "Spent All Day In The Kitchen" tread. I actually used the Food Lion brand... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Bisquick

I made Fruit Swirl Coffee Cake (using gluten-free Bisquick and apple pie filling) and I thought it turned out pretty good. Would be good for a Christmas morning breakfast. Open Original Shared Link That was when I was desperate after I threw out a two-layer chocolate cake made from a recipe in The Gluten-Free Kitchen. -

When I built my house 4 years ago, I specifically specified that I wanted doors with sliding drawers, not shelves, in the bottom cabinets. Of course, I also some some regular drawers, too, and I also specified they be full-extension (yes, it costs more). Nothing worse than getting down on my hands and knees to try and reach something at the very back of...

ARCHIVED Are My Symptoms Test-Worthy?
sa1937 replied to churchlady's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
There is a local store I shop at that also has an in-house bakery right next to dairy and I hate the smells that waft from it. I can't say that it almost makes me sick, but I do find those smells to be offensive.
