ARCHIVED Going To Be Tested, Whats A Good Lab?
sa1937 replied to superfob's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had my blood drawn at my local hospital and it was sent to Quest for analysis (this was for the older celiac panel). Of course, I knew nothing of these tests then and I question whether I would have had a choice of labs. On the other hand, my daughter lives in Denver, CO, and went to LabCorp for her test as that's where she goes for other lab work... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Everyday Cookbook
sa1937 replied to freeatlast's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
OK...fezz up! lol A great always-turns-out bread recipe is the one I keep searching for...and the one thing most often that I try new recipes!!! That does not mean I haven't made some perfectly edible breads as I have and some I want to go back and make again. YES, a celiac.com recipe booklet sounds great! -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Everyday Cookbook
sa1937 replied to freeatlast's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Lots of recipes here and on blogs, as well as manufacturer's websites. I especially like Pamela's Baking & Pancake Mix and have made a few things using it. They always turn out. I made corn muffins using it the other night...yummy! Gluten-free baking is tricky and you'll also need xanthan gum (I use it more than guar gum) to try to replicate the... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Everyday Cookbook
sa1937 replied to freeatlast's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Good question. I've picked up a few but am too new yet to say I have one to die for. But I keep trying new recipes, especially for baking. Sheesh, I've been cooking forever so that's not the problem but baking is. Let us know what you buy. I think I'd like the new Betty Crocker one...magazine-like...that's supposedly in the racks at the front of the... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Everyday Cookbook
sa1937 replied to freeatlast's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
So do I! I've printed off so many recipes that I need to start my own cookbook. Well, I've sorta done that already in a 3-ring notebook...only problem, nothing is organized. I even bought write-on dividers. So that's a good project for the dead of winter. (I may have to buy a larger notebook though). But I'm still prone to pick up another new cookbook... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Everyday Cookbook
sa1937 replied to freeatlast's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Out of curiosity I just browsed through this Gluten Free Every Day Cookbook on Amazon. My greatest challenge is baking, not cooking, so I'm probably not inclined to buy it. I am curious to see what others have to say about it though. I keep adding things to my wish list all the time, especially based on other's recommendations. Ya, just what I need..... -
ARCHIVED I Miss My Jiffy Cornbread!

I made corn muffins tonight using this recipe and the baking and pancake mix and they were good! -
ARCHIVED Ignore Blood Test, If Biopsy Negative?
sa1937 replied to Lunabell's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
His advice does not sound good to me. If the blood tests were positive and the biopsy is negative, especially with her positive response to the gluten-free diet, I think you already have your answer. -
ARCHIVED Diagnosed As Refractory Celiac Disease-Failed Steroid Treatment
sa1937 replied to krose710's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm almost at the 9-month mark since my EGD/biopsy and still have some issues. My GI has not suggested refractory. I've only eaten out once (not a good experience) and even canceled a much-hoped for vacation as I felt uncomfortable to even think of traveling. This disease 'tis a puzzle. -

Somehow a glass (or more) of wine with pancakes just doesn't sound very good. lol -
ARCHIVED Diagnosed As Refractory Celiac Disease-Failed Steroid Treatment
sa1937 replied to krose710's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Just curious...do they really consider celiac as refractory if you've only been gluten-free four months? Or how do they reach the conclusion that it's refractory? -
ARCHIVED Betty Crocker Goes Gluten-Free - PR Web (press release)

Not a bad price! I'll have to look for it and hopefully have a chance to glance through it before buying, if I figure it's worth it. -

Have you tried any of the gluten-free beers? Personally I don't like beer so that's not an issue for me. -

I do not like tequila...but white wine (specifically Chardonnay) is my friend (in moderation, of course). -

I doubt you can "kill" gluten with any cleaner (unless you count heat of a gas grill or putting cast iron in a self-cleaning oven and burning it off) but I think you could get countertops clean with a number of different products. I've used 409, scrubbie-bubbles bath cleaner, etc. On my hard-anodized Calphalon cookware I use Comet Cleanser...that would... -

How much does this new cookbook cost? I think that will be a determining factor if I will buy it...as if I need yet another gluten-free cookbook (and I hate to admit that I do have some on my wish list at Amazon). -

Obviously if you've gotten sick from them, it's important for you to avoid them. I think it's impossible for any company to come up with a gluten-free mix or product that doesn't have an ingredient or two in it that someone will react to. I am very happy that a mainstream company like General Mills has jumped on the gluten-free bandwagon as it means I... -

With a review like this, I decided to check it out and add it to my wish list...only to discover it's already there! And I got an Amazon gift card for Christmas! -

I had crap for lunch (will those Christmas leftovers ever end?) so I had a pork chop, nuked sweet potato and spinach for dinner. -

Yes, I'm familiar with Sam Mills Pasta D'oro...and it's good! I'm able to get it here for $1.98 for 16 oz., which is a much better price than any other pastas I've seen. Do you have a Wal-Mart near you? Ours now carry Heartland Pasta (also good) for $1.98 for 12 oz. and comes in three different shapes, including spaghetti. -
I use Natural Choice (Nutro Lite Lamb & Rice), which I've used for years as my dog was getting chronic ear infections from beef. The only grain is rice so that's one thing I didn't have to concern myself with when I became gluten-free.

ARCHIVED Switching Kitchen To Gluten-Free
sa1937 replied to TooManyHats's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Personally I'd just give the countertops a good scrubbing but then I never prepare foods directly on the countertop. I did buy new cutting boards and always use them. Thankfully they are inexpensive so you could buy a couple of different sizes (plus they can go in the dishwasher...providing they are not made of wood). -
ARCHIVED How Gluten Friendly Is Your State?
sa1937 replied to Mama Melissa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I suspect it has a lot to do with the size of the city...small town, USA just doesn't have the options of a large city like Denver (yeah, I'm jealous that my daughter lives there and has so many options ). lol ETA: And she can buy Udi's bread FRESH, not frozen!!! -
Using chicken breast tenders is taking the easy way out! So much easier than dealing with chicken breasts.
