  1. Rum and coke is a good one. If it's mixed well, it doesn't taste alcoholic, and pretty much any bar has Bacardi. Vodka and orange or cranberry juice is another good one. Woodchuck Strongbow hard ciders are easy to find and are often popular even with people who can consume gluten.
  2. Your story sounds like mine. I did my own gluten-free trial and gluten challenge before seeing the doctor, who didn't run a complete test panel. When the one test she did run came back negative, she declared me fine, decided that I must be stressed out due to grad school, refused to run any more tests as "celiac disease is very rare", and told me she was...
  3. Mine wasn't a new year's resolution. Rather, I chose Christmas as my gluten challenge following inconclusive celiac testing and the severity of my symptoms convinced me that I should never again eat gluten. I'd suffered for years with latent disease and had a few months of hellish active disease symptoms, so once I quit there was no going back. Since going...
  4. Would she try a non-dairy yogurt? I didn't see soy in her allergen list, and Silk makes really good soy yogurts. So Delicious also makes a line of coconut milk yogurts that are very good. Those two brands were my go-to when my gut was healing from celiac damage and I couldn't eat any dairy. You don't even have to tell her that you've bought it because you...
  5. For me the worst is usually over after 3-4 days. It's a few more days after that before I'm feeling back to normal. Hopefully you'll start feeling better quite soon.
  6. Aww, I was all excited until I read the ingredients and saw that it was mostly tapioca flour. Tapioca and I don't always play nice together, especially in large doses (hence the reason I do my from-scratch baking with potato or arrowroot starch instead of tapioca). I won't hesitate to suggest it to others, though, not with that ringing endorsement.
  7. Okay, so I tried the count-to-30 method. And i have to say that it appears to be working, and it's been a hot, humid, sweaty, stressful morning. Nowhere on the packaging did it say to apply it that thoroughly, so I wonder how many other people are trying this and giving up because they're not getting adequate coverage. I do have to say that the feeling of...
  8. I'll give the 16 year old a bit of a pass since I had surgery at her age and I remember how freaked out I was by it. It doesn't excuse the behavior or make it acceptable but it makes it a little more understandable. It does sound like it's time to tell the older kids that either they can pay for the fast-food treats out of their allowance or they can eat...
  9. Here in the USA, Dannon (same company) does not guarantee that its yogurts are gluten-free. Scroll down to "Other Ingredients" on Open Original Shared Link.
  10. I'm thinking that to get it to work I'm going to have to smear it pretty much all the way over my shoulder and back around. I'll have to try the count-to-30 trick. I haven't had the heart to throw it out yet, especially since it's one of the few things that hasn't made me break out in a rash (along with Suave powder scent antiperspirant and Tom's regular...
  11. I'm a big fan of Whole Foods 365 peanut butter. Two ingredients: peanuts and salt. No added sugar or other oils. Two other thoughts: one, are the fish oil capsules certified gluten-free? And two- with your very limited diet are you getting enough calories and nutrients? I get nasty headaches if I don't eat enough.
  12. It was discontinued for a bit, but it's back on the market. I think i heard that Walgreen's is carrying it. I wish I wasn't allergic to something in it, that stuff really did work the best.
  13. We use California Baby's Calendula Cream as a face lotion. I've found it at both Whole Foods and Target. It's very gentle, smells great, is gluten-free (and free of many other allergenic substances), and is the only thing that helps our winter eczema. I don't use a separate eye cream (they always irritate my eyes) but maybe I'll have to check out that Garnier...
  14. We actually do like Redbridge. He's also been looking into gluten-free homebrewing and made a batch with sorghum and buckwheat that was pretty decent. But getting him to give up mainstream beer is nigh impossible. Getting him to eat gluten-free when we're out is impossible. We were out of town last weekend and after watching him eat sandwiches, pizza, cookies...
  15. Quite possibly. Most people aren't diagnosed until they're adults. My husband's uncle is a 60-year-old grandfather of three AND a medical doctor, and he was only diagnosed last year.
  16. I think that for many people, wheat and/or gluten is hard to digest even if they don't have celiac disease. Our kitchen is gluten-free except for my husband's beer and brewing supplies and has been for several months now. My husband does eat gluten when we're out. He drinks a beer pretty much every day and the barley/rye ones don't seem to bother him, but...
  17. I've had no luck with the Thai crystal for odor prevention. Maybe I sweat it off too quickly or something. The Tom's of Maine Honeysuckle Rose smells great but seems to give out on me after a couple of hours if it's hot and humid. It's fine in cooler weather so I might go back to that in the fall. I tried Adidas cotton-tech deodorant (no aluminum) and that...
  18. My sister-in-law just got married and had a dessert reception. Since an uncle and I both have celiac disease, she bought Katz gluten-free cookies and put them in pretty packages for us. The chocolate chip ones were good, the chocolate-dipped wafers were awesome. I'm not a big sweets eater normally, so snacks usually consist of Kind bars or Larabars, Lundberg...
  19. I was wondering that myself. I've got Grey Poupon and Tabasco mustards in my fridge and both are safe. This thread is hilarious and sad all at once. People are so ignorant. Luckily, I haven't had too much trouble. I spent the weekend with my husband's family for my sister-in-law's wedding, and other than fielding a lot of questions and having to order...
  20. I've had really good luck with Nuts Online. I've received two orders of raw almonds as well as gluten-free raw/sprouted nut mixes and some other goodies (dried fruits, almond flour, bulk quinoa). Service is reliable and the products are high quality. I'm also highly sensitive to cross-contamination and haven't had problems with their foods.
  21. Could it be the sugar? Or maybe a combination of sugar and coconut? Too much sugar upsets my stomach.
  22. Strongbow is definitely gluten-free. Could you maybe have a problem with the yeast or the fructose?
  23. Lots of things are labeled gluten-free in restaurants or stores, but all it takes is a careless employee that day, someone who doesn't understand what gluten-free means, or an unannounced ingredient supplier change to mess that up- even if 99% of the time things are fine. I've been glutened at restaurants when I've ordered from the gluten-free menu. If the...
  24. I love Nuts Online. I buy raw almonds and quinoa from them in 5 lb bags. Very good quality. They also have gluten-free raw/sprouted nut mixes. Good stuff.
  25. Make sure the feta wasn't crumbled and mixed with wheat starch to prevent clumping. I doubt it would be, but you never know. I always check to make sure crumbled feta is mixed with corn starch or just buy it in block form and crumble it myself. I've never had a problem with it. Otherwise, rich food and too much dairy can set me off as well. Most likely that...
