ARCHIVED Pretty Upset Right Now...
anabananakins replied to crissy82's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I stuffed myself with gluten for three months and still tested negative. Unless you want to keep eating gluten for another few months to re-do the testing, you might as well accept that you're not going to get an official diagnosis now, but you can go gluten free anyway. Heck, you could stuff yourself with gluten for years and still test negative, it doesn... -

I'm sorry you feel so upset. It does get better, truly. I've been gluten free 2 years now. -

Ah, I missed that. Well she's a great recommendation, worth the wait. -
ARCHIVED Anaheim / Disneyland Gluten Free Restaurants / Products?
anabananakins replied to amber's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I'm Australian and I'm used to walking a lot (and Sydney is really hilly) and I had no problem walking around Anaheim, it's flat as a pancake. I felt safe wandering around, it was all families. I even walked alone from the park to my hotel around closing time (there were crowds of families walking to their hotels too and my friends were at a hotel on a... -
ARCHIVED Any Good Doctors From Sydney, Australia?
anabananakins replied to ellie-kate's topic in Doctors
I've seen her too Beebs and she's very supportive. -
Very good point about needing to know your audience, I've read stories like that too and they just horrify me, people wouldn't do that with rat poison (I hope!) but they do that with something that's going to hurt the person very much. It's just awful, and I don't understand why people could be so awful when they'd probably be supportive if it were cancer...

ARCHIVED Honestly, I'm Stunned!
anabananakins replied to MitziG's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I'm really glad to hear how much better you feel, though I'm not sure I really wanted to know, lol, since I have been trying to psyche myself up to go dairy free for ages. I just can't bear to, even though I suspect it would really help. Maybe this will inspire me. It sounds fabulous. -
Beebs, are you from Victoria? In my family the NSW raised kids were vegemite kids, but the victorian branch of the family were promite kids. I hope for you that it's gluten free!

Interesting, that's way more than I thought. I used to work at a hotel too but I don't think we had them to offer even if someone wanted to pay. ETA, I'm in Australia.

ARCHIVED May Contain Trace Amounts Of Wheat
anabananakins replied to JaneWhoLovesRain's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm in Australia and I don't know the rules around the 'may contain' warnings here (I really should look that up) but I have a personal policy not to eat anything with one. I figure that if it's on there, then someone thought there was some chance of contamination and I appreciate the heads up. In two years I've never had any problems with an australian... -
I tell people that I'm waiting for the testing to catch up. I agree that there's something major missing. Articles I'd read about gluten ataxia indicated that plenty of people who improved on a gluten free diet hadn't tested positive for celiac and I think I likely fall into that category. I don't mind being open about testing negative, people know that...

ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
anabananakins replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Shroomie, it sucks that no one ever thought to offer you the tests, could've saved you so much pain Saz, I totally get needing a name for it. I think had I not been reading/posting here during the months I was getting ready to go gluten free, I wouldn't have been successful, I wouldn't have stuck to it. There was a lot of encouragment to accept that... -
ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
anabananakins replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Saz, I didn't have one. I thought about insisting on it (I'd been reading/posting here before my testing) but by that point I was desperate to get off the gluten again and I don't think it would've been easy to get a referral for one and was tired of arguing with doctors. When my gene testing came back negative that was it, really. I'd already indicated... -
I'm pretty sure it's an extract from barley. There is a gluten free version though (made by another company)

You should be able to bring in food that meets your needs so long as it doesn't contain anything that will harm the children. I've been on prac in a preschool and they have a no nuts, no fish, no sesame seeds rule. That makes it a little tricky for me (I rely on nuts as a snack a lot) but I can work around it. I can see how he's more worried about anaphalactyic...

ARCHIVED How Do I Handle Family Functions That Revolve Around Food?
anabananakins replied to RiaG14's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's also really positive that they have invited you to bring your own food. It's way less tricky than negotiating situations where they say "we've made something gluten free especially for you!" and you're then terrified that it's been contaminated (likely) and have to feel bad about not eating it (either pushing it around your plate in which case they are... -
It would've been nice if you could've gotten them to change the corporate policy, oh well, at least you tried. If I stay with them again I'll check and maybe make a fuss too. I get that there's work/cost involved in providing fridges but not *that* many people would ask for them.

ARCHIVED Positive Airline Experience
anabananakins replied to mushroom's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
That's great to hear and ooh, jealous of the first class food! I've never gotten to sit in the pointy end of the plane, eating some of their food would be the next best thing :-) I was impressed by Air New Zealand when I flew them last year, I had a minor freak out over getting a gluten free bread roll (whoever heard of such a thing!) and so they ran through... -
I've never been to Israel but in Australia we get gluten free foods (pretzels, cake etc) that are made in Israel so I'm sure that they would be available there too. I can't think what the brand is offhand - might be Etzel, or something like that? I just googled gluten free israel and lots of good links came up - it seems to be a country with good awareness...

ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
anabananakins replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I've had doctors wonder about that Beebs, when I describe my long term symptoms and how they cleared up, it's puzzling and quite a few have said they'd be sure I was celiac if it weren't for the negatives (and some have pointed out the false negatives too). I gave it the best shot I could though, 4 months of eating masses of gluten before I was tested and... -
I'm australian and therefore used to be a happy little vegemite... alas, no more (vegemite is not gluten free) I'm not bothering witht the gluten free versions because in my experience, the type of spread you eat (marmite, vegemite etc) depends on what you were given as a little kid and all the others taste awful! I used to love it on vita wheat biscuits...

ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
anabananakins replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Beebs, it was really funny, I had porridge on the list of things I was majorly mourning and then one day I saw those bob red mill (?) ones from the US on the shelf in Thomas Dux. I looked at the price - $14!!! and in an instant any desire I had for porridge vanished forevermore. I enjoyed it but it really wasn't work that much money. Talk about (not) putting... -
I guess that's a bargain if you stay a longer visit but that's a pretty big charge for just one night. Especially when there are so many hotels that do offer a fridge for free. I guess maybe they figure their market is business traveller's whose employer will absorb the cost... it would put me off staying with them, as comfy as they are.

ARCHIVED How To Approach Parents
anabananakins replied to RashyA's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I keep working on my mum and I'm impressed how much has sunk in over the past 2 years. She's always eaten well, good whole foods, no junk. But she likes her home made bread and she likes crackers. And she's always had digestive issues, she was the one who made me think mine were normal because as kids we'd get a peppermint when we had stomach aches, like stomach... -
ARCHIVED What Has The Support Group Done For You?
anabananakins replied to eimzom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
This forum has been my support group and immeasurably beneficial to me. It's wonderful knowing that other people understand I feel, people who can help with practical details and just knowing that they've survived this too. If I hadn't received such encouragement to trial the gluten free diet after my testing was all negative, I would never have discovered...
