  1. I ate at Gourmet Burger Kitchen in the UK a bunch of times, they'd do a burgerless bun. The waitress asked me if I wanted fries and I asked about the fryer because there were breaded items on the menu. Yep, shared fryer makes those innocent potatos non-gluten free. But no one had educated her about that risk. So I gave her a little lesson :-). She was...
  2. Totally agree with all of this! It's hard! I'm experimenting with dairy free (going dairy light to start). I've done a few days at a time and then I fall off the wagon, I adore dairy. Dairy and wheat used to be my two main food groups :-) I'm lactose intolerant so I've mostly ditched yoghurt, cottage cheese etc, lactose free milk is awesome but it doesn...
  3. Research, research, research! I can't help with Vegas but one thing I found really helpful when travelling to the states ( meeting up with friends etc) was to have a bunch of options in mind, for suggestions. People generally don't care where they eat, it helps if someone can make the decision. If you've already worked out all the options (and I keep notes...
  4. I made guacamole this morning and I thought of your post as I murdered my avocado! It made chuckle. And the guac was delicious - thank you!
  5. I wouldn't have thought to add salmon but that sounds good - makes it a more filling meal. Thanks for the recipe. My problem is that the mexican place I like to eat at (similar to Chiptole) puts tomato in the guac. I'm really not thrilled at the idea of losing that eating out option, but it won't kill me to trial it.
  6. It sounds like I hit on the right one then! It was exciting to eat non-crumbly bread. Though I totally agree about needing to toast it. I want more buttered toast, right now. Sigh.
  7. I use Ayam products quite a lot, never had a problem with them. With the "may contains" Macro products... I get that gluten free purchasers are a small subset of all buyers, but I think they are missing the point that we're buying *for life*. A regular person might try quinoa a few times, but unless they love it or don't care about the price, they probably...
  8. This info has been really handy, thank you. I am beginning to come round to the idea that I need to try going nightshade free for awhile. Tomatoes and bell peppers are my two main vegetables :-( My joints ache constantly and have done nearly my whole life. I remember the doctor "diagnosing" (I say that because I don't think he really had any idea what...
  9. I tried for an official diagnosis but 4 months of bingeing on gluten still = negative blood tests. But I felt remarkably better 3 days gluten free (and never looked back) so I obviously had a problem with gluten. The gluten challenge would be far less painful it actually worked for more people
  10. Yes, very true and worth mentioning. We always talk about the Big Two but if you want real bread, IGA has quite a good range in the freezer section (at least, the one in North Sydney, Greenwood plaza does). I try to forget so I don't end up eating too many toasted cheese sandwiches :-) Beebs, I didn't check the polenta but that's so daft (The brand in...

    ARCHIVED PCOS And Celiac

Very interested to hear the links to Hashimoto's. I have PCOS and there has been a tonne of research in the last decade, it's still pretty new knowledge to many docs that it's driven by insulin resistance. Lots of docs treat it with the birth control pill which is not good, it might make your cycle regular but it increases your risk of insulin resistance...
  12. Woolies range is really weird like that, for example, the quinoa they sell has a 'may contains gluten' warning. So stupid, half the consistent quinoa purchasers must be gluten free people and it's not safe for them. Coles do block the products better and you're so right about woolies putting that bloody garlic bread /pizza stuff near the gluten free foods...
  13. I eat Crust pizza here in Australia. They worked with the coeliac society and I don't know how they keep stuff separate - it's a small shop - but I've never gotten sick. But I got bored with it - I'm not that keen on the crust (heh) and they are more into fancy toppings where I always liked plain old peppers, onion, mushrooms and olives. There's a ready...
  14. I went to woolies yesterday to get some but I was a bit shocked at the price. I usually go to Coles and their Basco cake mixes are in the $3-$4 range and these were $5.50, eek. When I realised I'd also need egg rings (I don't know what I was thinking was going to hold them up), I decided I didn't miss crumpets that much. So my experimenting is on hold for...
  15. I haven't tried them yet Saz, but I might have a go tonight. Are they edible, even if they don't look right?
  16. Oh dear yes, they are not the place for the nightshade, corn, and legume free person, are they?
  17. I don't generally eat corn, but I suddenly have cornflakes cravings! It's pretty chilly in Sydney too. I'm getting lots of wear out of my winter clothes this year! (no complaints though, I hate the high humidity of summer)
  18. This is very interesting reading and I should follow up more on the research. I read a lot about 18 months ago, but haven't since. It was the neurological symptoms and research I read that showed people with neuro symptoms often didn't test positive to the regular celiac tests that scared me into being 100% gluten free. I suspect that if they ever develop...
  19. I should have added - I don't have the lettuce or the cheese. Only stuff that they are serving with the spoons. I react to pretty tiny amounts of cc and I've only gotten glutened once that I attribute to Chipotle, and that was pretty minor so I think it must've been a minuscule amount of cc. I find tortillas very unlikely to crumb, they are quite...
  20. Oh, that butter shortbread is to die for. I took a short cut through the regular biscuit aisle in coles recently and I noticed they had it stocked there too. I thought that was a great idea because it tastes way better than any gluten-containing brand I ever ate and god knows I ate enough short bread back in the day. Next time the supply in the gluten...
  21. Such meanness I need Chipotle to make next to hotels their preferred location. My friends let me pick and they know that eating at Chipotle will be on the agenda. We managed three meals there in 2 days at the one in Santa Barbara
  22. Yes. I'm overweight. I used to take antacids all the time (not a one since I went gluten free). I've been anxious since a small child, always lethargic and tired and those dark shadows lifted considerably when I went gluten free. Also, not sure about the last bit but when I used to throw up I would throw up for hours (like, 12) uncontrollably. Likewise...
  23. I take chex, a loaf of udi's bread and a jar of nutella. They don't require refridgeration and the chex is yummy dry. I also have a mini folding colander, a thin chopping board, a knife, cutlery and a plastic plate and bowl (from ikea) which all fit in my little food bag; they make it easier to do some cut up veges if I get a chance to buy any. Also...
  24. I missed your original post at the time but I think it's awesome your chiro suggested celiac. Because I too always failed the romberg test and my chiro didn't indicate that it was a problem, there were just exercises he wanted me to do. It was about 3 years later that I ended up going gluten free (and in those 3 years I gleefully showed people how I'd always...
  25. BWAHAHAHA! I love it. Made me laugh out loud. Before I went gluten free, I never saw an IHOP (I don't live in the US). But it sounded like an awesome place. A house of pancakes!!!! (pancakes aren't really a thing here). Naturally, since I've gone gluten free I ended up with IHOP being the closest restaurant to my hotel nearly.every.single.time...
