ARCHIVED Weight Watchers
anabananakins replied to Greentealady's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
This. When I walked in as a 20 year old at a perfectly healthy weight, they should've told me to go away. But because I was 5 kilos from the bottom of their healthy weight chart, they signed me and proceeded to encourage me to eat tonnes of artifically sweeted processed rubbish. Sweet is sweet regardless of the source of sweet taste and it sets you up to... -
ARCHIVED Question For Australians
anabananakins replied to Twinklestars's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I had no idea they were the same company, Twinklestars. Weird - Don stuff doesn't make any gluten free claims but the KR Castlemaine stuff definately does. I wonder if they were two separate companies (with separate manufacturing plants) that ended up all owned by the same people. -

Oh, that's crummy! (ha, that word is an even bigger insult in this forum). It's not like they aren't easy to make, if you wanted the premade ones you'd buy them frozen. And even the frozen ones I get here are gluten free (by ingredient, they don't make claims) -
ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
anabananakins replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
That's them! Hee, you're probably the reason why I couldn't find any last time ;-) (kidding!) I brought an extra suitcase to bring back food from my trip to the US and UK recently. Alas, none of the snickerdoodles made it back. I ate 5 boxes during a grand total of 7 days in the states (actually, that's disgusting, I really didn't realise it was quite... -
ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)

Ah, I meant to buy that mix this weekend - it was so gloomy and rainy here in Sydney - but I totally forgot. Shame about the lack of bubbles. Crumpets are one of those products I never imagined making from scratch, I just never really understood how they worked. Good to hear though that they tasted good and nearly right. I'll let you know how I go when... -
I've eaten there twice and thought they were great. I love getting my meals on a separate plate - I know that way that they are correct. It's not chinese food like I used to be able to eat (from small family run places here in Sydney) but better than no chinese food at all :-)

I agree with you Peter and I don't worry about them either. They aren't trained chefs but they sure as heck are trained to follow procedures precisely. Thinking not encouraged That conversation is hilarious though and made for an amusing read! I always watch to see what happens with my fries in their journey from the fryer to me, but so long as I... -

Hi Rose, Go to Coles and yes, it's in a well marked section. In my local Coles the gluten free stuff is near the frozen veges. There isn't a big label on the outside, but you'll see the boxes are labeled. Be careful though - they keep some vegetarian stuff (Quorn) in the same section, and that is NOT gluten free. I think the Coles at Bondi Junction... -
Salads can go a bit yucky if you can't keep them cool (it gets warm in my office). I take the whole vegetables with me (usually carrots, tomato, a pepper) and I cut them up in the office. I take hummus and cheese sticks for protein. Peanut butter is a great standby. I have cans of tuna in my desk for in case I forget to bring stuff. I also keep nuts...

I've tried the cherry pies and the apple pies and I thought they were DIVINE. With lashings of cream of course, ha. I also enjoyed the spinach and ricotta frozen ravioli. I'd really missed tortellini. The frozen food section at coles has increased immensely lately and it's awesome. I'm almost glad it's only just expanded though - I would've spent a... -
ARCHIVED Question For Australians

That's nuts. Subway is the last place I'd trust eating at. I mean, it's a food outlet dedicated to things on gigantic bread rolls! Though that said, my whole life I've loathed the smell of their stores, that herby-baking bread smell ugh (and this was when I loved bread). Yet now that I can't eat it, I adore the smell of subway. Go figure. -

If you're going for the packaged stuff, the KR Castlemaine stuff is gluten free too, and labeled (with the symbol of wheat with the arrow through it). I like it when they have the label on the front, because reading the ingredients lists on packaged meats always icks me out and I don't end up buying. I guess that's probably for the best... Only problem... -

Oh dear! I hope you feel better soon. -
Oh dear! I've seen Schar's here but it's extremely expensive so I've never tried it. I'm glad you've saved me the trouble! And yes, my poor bread! If I'd been at home I would've kept the crumbs but it wasn't worth dragging them around the world I quite like Udi's, so that might be a bit of a disclaimer. But i know what you mean - it...

Hummus has quite a lot of calories for a small serve. It's great with cut up veges.

Um, what she said! I'm rubbish at describing - and I've never eaten gluten-containing US bread - but the genius bread tastes pretty much like normal, sliced wholewheat bread, I think. At least, how I remember it tasting. It's soft, slightly crumbly but you can make sandwiches and has no weird lingering taste. It's also available in regular supermarkets...

Samuella, I was in London recently and it is a fabulous place to be gluten free (well, the UK generally I found). All the supermarkets have a big range of foods, all together. I adored the sainsbury's "free from" brownies, but they have heaps of other treats too. Restaurants were always helpful, and I went to a few without researching in advance. Servers...

ARCHIVED Meh, I Think I React To Chex :-(
anabananakins replied to anabananakins's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thank you for all this information. It doesn't sound like something I particularly want to eat, though there seem to be pluses and minuses to it. It's fascinatingly creepy some of the stuff that goes into food and we're completely oblivious. -
ARCHIVED Meh, I Think I React To Chex :-(
anabananakins replied to anabananakins's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I haven't done the test, but my dietician does think that I have fructose malabsorption based on how I reacted to removing particular fruits and veges from my diet. But I don't usually get the balance problems from it, just bloating and an upset stomach. But the large amount of sugar in Chex is definitely a reason not to eat it. What is MBT, I don't know... -
ARCHIVED Meh, I Think I React To Chex :-(
anabananakins posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
After a few days of achey joints, not a great feeling tummy and major balance issues, it occurred to me that pigging out on Chex might have gotten to me. I was eating the honey nut one on my trip and felt fine, but I never ate all that much at once. However, the box of cinnamon that I brought home got eat (solely by me) in less than a week. Usually my... -
ARCHIVED Why Is Barley Malt Added To So Many Breakfast Cereals?
anabananakins replied to kellynolan82's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well, we can get a bunch of gluten free cereals here, but they all look too healthy for me to bother with. A non-gluten free friend loves one of them I passed a bag onto him when I realised I was never going to be inspired to eat it. He calls it "rice shards" :-) I just don't eat cereal at all anymore now that I can't eat oats. Really, in asking for... -
Nutella is a staple when I'm travelling. It doesn't require refrigeration and it's yummy, so you don't feel deprived. Plus after a few days of living on a diet of chex cereal and nutella sandwiches I'm so sugared up that I'm thrilled to eat vegetables again.

ARCHIVED Burger Joint - Gluten Free Buns - Same Toaster?
anabananakins replied to kellynolan82's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Burger Fuel were actually pretty good when I went to them soon after going gluten free. The girl who took my order made sure that I knew the fries were cooked in the same oil as the microbites and that this was an issue. Being new to the whole thing and undiagnosed I was sure I'd be fine and the fries were the best part imo - ha! That was hands down my... -
ARCHIVED Vitamin D Deficiency--Poll
anabananakins replied to PainfulSpaghetti's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was diagnosed with Vit D deficiency a year ago July... 22 with a reference range of 51-140. I used to feel like death warmed up. Retested in July and I was 107 - woot! I think I take 3000 a day (it's three pills anyway). I live in Sydney, Australia too - you'd think I'd be getting enough sunshine. I don't go and lie in the sun, but just walking to... -

Don't beat yourself up, there's so much to learn, but flour is a definite no no. And it's YOUR house, you can say so. Heck, my mother respects my request to please not do any bread baking in the days leading up to my visit (and she uses a bread machine so she's not flinging around flour much) and that's me asking her to do something in her house. She gets...
