  1. I think suggesting 3 other restaurants like you've planned is the way to handle it. She can pick from those. I really doubt she's so fond of the place that you always used to go to to insist on going there when you can't eat. You guys will just have to find a new traditon When friends ask me out to eat, I say "sounds great, where were you thinking...
  2. Thanks Plumbago, yeah, that's what I was advised when I phoned them and I also checked on an amtrak forum full of extremely frequent travelers. I think the onboard staff get confused because there are some special meals available if ordered in advance (like kosher meals) and they probably assume that there are others. Especially since most people don't...
  3. With the blood tests, have they been checking your insulin levels when doing the glucose tolerance test? A regular diabetes test doesn't show insulin problems, nor does a GTT if they aren't specifically also checking insulin. I had to have the test twice because my first GP didn't realise this and didn't order the insulin check, and it isn't checked as standard...
  4. Wonderful post, thanks for sharing! I hope you are recovering well and that was very scary what happened, glad you were ok. btw, next time you are travelling that way, pretty much all the asian airlines are fantastic (actually don't usually hear such good things about China airlines so that was good to hear).
  5. I'm glad I saw your post as I realised I'd totally forgotten to post my amtrak experiences. I spent a total of 5 nights on the train in Sept / Oct last year. Interesting about the steak! I took the southwest chief from LA to Chicago, 2 nights. I took a chance and had the steak with a potato and side salad and I did not get sick. It sounds like I was lucky...
  6. I was going to mention PCOS too. If you're focused more on fresh foods you might have lowered her carb intake and that helps manage the insulin resistance which triggers PCOS which has icky symptoms like hair growth. I personally haven't found that going gluten free has done much directly for my pcos, but I do find it easier to eat less processed carbs...
  7. Have you lowered your overall carb intake? I have those patches, they are a symptom (side effect?)of insulin resistance. Commonly found on the back of the neck, inside of the upper arms, inside of upper thighs. It's generally a good sign if they are fading (if they are because of insulin resistance) but I would suggest seeing your doctor if you are overweight...
  8. I really agree with all that Mushroom wrote, and it's how I handle things. I was talking to a coworker the other day and she was spouting off stupid theories about how maybe if we all ate small amounts of gluten we'd be able to tolerate it better (I'd been explaining about how since I've gone totally gluten free, I'm much more sensitive). I told her that...
  9. A couple of years ago my building lost power for a bit over 24 hours. Seems minor but omg I was so unprepared. I'm on the 8th floor, getting up and down fire stairs in the dark isn't easy, all my food spoiled etc. Luckily I already kept candles and we got a bit of light in from all the other buildings in the neighbourhood, but it made me think a bit...
  10. My GP said that unfortunately it might be that my anxiety is unrelated to my gluten intolerance. I'd hoped cutting out gluten, sugar and caffeine would see improvements, but I don't see any pattern (except with caffeine but only with excessive amounts) and for me it's been 8 months. Still, 4 days is very early. I hope you continue to see improvements...
  11. Doesn't it just! I got glutened the other day, and the only thing I can think it could be was the chocolates I had. My coworker showed me the ingredients first and they looked fine, but I didn't eat a single other suspect thing all day and with my office mate away, it wasn't even as if there were other crumbs etc around. Or maybe it wasn't a glutening...
  12. I am sorry you've had these experiences and I'm glad your closest family are very supportive of you. I have been lucky, I guess. People have been supportive. I thought my mother was thinking it was a fad diet from some of the things she said but when I stayed with her recently (for the first time since I went gluten free) she was fantastic at making sure...
  13. Same for me! It's so nice not to feel like I'm going to smash into things all the time. And led to less bruises too. I stopped being insanely thirsty all the time. I used to want to drink about 6 litres of water a day (I didn't, as the doctor said it was bad and it made me feel spacey, but I was constantly thirsty). Now I'm normal-people thirsty. And...
  14. Hi! I tested negative for the genes too - I'm in Australia - and so that was considered to rule out celiac. But I went gluten free anyway and feel a million times better. You don't have to have them for gluten to make you feel pretty awful. And since there is so much they don't know, I'm not risking damage while they work it out. So glad you went gluten...
  15. My mum just made it the regular way but using gluten free plain flour. We use the White Wings brand plain flour (I'm in Australia) I'll ask her for the recipe and I'll post it later! update: ok, she came back and I got her to tell me: 1 cup flour and a pinch of salt. Make a well in the flour and mix in 2 eggs, then alternate with milk and water until...
  16. I do too. Plus, they'll never realise but in giving me a box of chocolates with "may contain" warnings that I won't eat they have (a) expressed kind appreciation to me through their gift and ( saved me going out to buy similar gifts for other people since I've just been passing them on. Anything to keep me away from having to go christmas shopping is highly...
  17. This made me laugh out loud. I forgot to tell my mum no wooden spoons. I caught it before any liquid was added so we kept the flour and just switched spoons - I figured at that point the spoon couldn't have transfered too much badness. Hope you were ok too!
  18. Happy Christmas! I'm doing well so far, it's far exceeded my expectations (first visit to my mum's place since I went gluten free) And my fussy sister even enjoyed the gluten free yorkshire pudding, and I'd expected grumblings. So yay! Wishing everyone a happy and healthy holiday!
  19. Thanks to both of you for the replies (and sorry I didn't say so before, posted then had no internet access for over a week!) Interesting about the other DQ results. I'm very strictly gluten free and I won't go back to eating gluten again, but I find it all very interesting and I'm curious in particular about the neurological manifestations of gluten...
  20. Hi all. When I got the results from my genetic test I just skipped through to the conclusion since the numbers made no sense to me. But I know there are people here who are good at explaining them, so if anyone gets a chance I'd be really grateful. The report (hoping the formatting works, I'm trying to keep it as laid out in the original) says: ====...
  21. That is so awesome, congratulations to you! You are an inspiration.
  22. Yeah, even 3 months you could still get a false negative. I read so much trying to find a definitive answer and never got one - though I saw suggestions that it could take 12 months. It's so hard to know if you'd ever get a positive result. I ate massive amounts of gluten for about 14 weeks and still tested negative (though I gained 15 pounds with all...
  23. Hi! I spent about a week in DC in October. Trader Joes and Whole Foods were awesome. There is a Whole Foods near the Tenleytown metro stop. I didn't go to that one (turned out my friend worked really close to the one on Wisconsin) but it would have been really easy had I needed to. The metro in DC is super easy and nice to use. Trader Joes is nearish...
  24. Snickerdoodles! The trader joes ones are super yummy. *plans another trip to the US for purposes of stocking up on snickerdoodles and udi's bread*
