Aww, cute! And sometimes, you just have to embrace the disaster When I managed to drop a plastic bowl of bolognaise sauce on the floor (I missed the counter entirely) with such force that it splashed everywhere (including the ceiling), I just had to laugh. It looked like there'd been a massacre.

That's really interesting. I remember watching a documentary about ADD a few years ago and thinking I shared so many of the attention issues they were describing (tendency to just stare off into space, inability to concentrate) but it also seemed odd to me since I wasn't like that as a child, it was adult me relating. Now I realise it was brain fog. It...

Hawthorn, I nodded to myself all through your post, my experiences were exactly the same. I am particularly thrilled to no longer be hitting the edges of door frames or smacking into the photocopier as I walked around it, I used to always have bruises. I couldn't handle having people walk towards me in a narrow corridor, it made my brain nearly explode...

Aww *hugs*. I'm a year gluten free and I sometimes get blindsided by dreams. Recently I dreamed that my mother was making eggplant parmigiana (mind you, she's never made that my entire life) and I walked in as she was spooning the white sauce all over it. White sauce made with regular flour! In my dream I was devastated that I couldn't eat a dish I loved...

I think that even if your tests were negative, with a dad with celiac there's a really good chance that you do have it and the tests were wrong. Or maybe they'd never come positive but you do have a clear reaction. Don't beat yourself up over it. We have a tendency to give more validation to an official diagnosis, but I think a diagnosis is very often stating...

ARCHIVED Dairy A Bigger Problem After Going Gluten-Free?
anabananakins replied to TexasJenn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hahaha, the sweetness is my favourite part! I am an avid milk drinker now :-) Someone explained it to me too...but I also do not remember. Something about the different sugar it ends up containing (the enzyme changes it from lactose to something?) I can have small amounts of regular milk in tea if need be, but it doesn't taste right anymore -
ARCHIVED Dairy A Bigger Problem After Going Gluten-Free?
anabananakins replied to TexasJenn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I only realised that I had a problem with lactose after I sent gluten free, though I did know from childhood that weetbix (breakfast cereal) and milk made me bloated. Once I stopped having non-stop stomach aches from gluten I realised that the yoghurt I was eating was the culprit with the occasional but bad stomach ache i still experienced. I drink a lot... -
ARCHIVED Please Help Bloating Is So Bad
anabananakins replied to glutenfreegirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's worth experimenting with the veges you eat too. It turned out that I had fructose malabsorption, and onion is the major culprit for me. I cut that out - bloating goes away. It's worth googling "Sue Shepherd" and "FODMAPs" and reading up a bit more on it. Most of the research is new and it's coming out of Australia (Monash University). -
ARCHIVED There's No Such Thing As A "dedicated Fryer"!
anabananakins replied to CNV2855's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Ick, that is disturbing! I don't eat fried stuff in regular restaurants and I think I will continue not to do so (though five guys sound good!) My first glutening was contaminated frying oil and OMG I wanted to die. That said, I don't have any problem with McDonald's fries. They are my go-to food when I'm out and about. I always double-check that they... -
ARCHIVED What Would One Slice Of Whole Wheat Bread Do To You ?
anabananakins replied to collgwg's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The thought of eating a slice of bread makes me cringe. I just couldn't do it. The times I've been glutened I've not even seen the crumb that got me, it doesn't take much. Most recently was after a morning tea where the other 150 people there were eating cake and no doubt touching their gluten-y fingers to everything in sight. I didn't eat anything, but... -
ARCHIVED Your Top Two Pieces Of Advice
anabananakins replied to Korwyn's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
1. This is one of those 'all or nothing' things. You cannot have any gluten again, ever. But don't try and wrap your head around this all at once. Take it one day at a time, and those gluten-y products start vanishing from your improving selective vision. 2. When eating out (or with other people) judge your audience. What I tell people about what I... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Handle Your Child's Birthday Party?
anabananakins replied to alex11602's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm late replying but I think absolutely you should make it entirely gluten free so your kids can have what they want. You want to be a gracious host, and to make food that you're guests will enjoy, but we all know that can be accomplished with gluten free food. I see it as different to asking a non-gluten free person to provide (or allow you to provide... -

ARCHIVED Observations We Can All Relate To...
anabananakins replied to MEH's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Great post! I was nodding :-) It really does get better. OMG, the brain fog. I got glutened the other day and my brain just went to mush. I spent all afternoon trying to remember what I was doing, it was like my head was an empty cavern. I used to feel like that all the time. My alcohol tolerance got better. Or rather, it's pretty much the same... -
ARCHIVED One Year Anniversary!
anabananakins replied to anabananakins's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks guys! And I do totally agree about the whimpering and the tantrums. The supermarket food is invisible, but I do have moments of "Awww, man! I can never have X again!" as things I eat rarely suddenly come up again as (not) possibilities. *moment of silence for donut king donuts*. But, for the most part, it just gets easier all the time. Especially... -
So, I've been gluten free a whole year now, woot! I couldn't imagine living the way I did before. Walking around the supermarket the other night, I realised that so many foods I used to have to purposely not look at (because to do so would lead to an overwhelming desire to throw myself on the floor and sob WHY!) are now as invisible to me as the pet food...

ARCHIVED Severe Travel Anxiety!
anabananakins replied to lynnelise's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think you're a great friend. And I think you'll be fine. Just be upfront with them that you won't eat anything they prepare. There are lots of snacks you can take. You can microwave potatoes and have them with a can of tuna, or take some veges to cut up for a salad and have them with tuna... if that stuff is too annoying to take then a person can go... -
ARCHIVED How Big Of A Deal Is Cross-Contamination?
anabananakins replied to Elfbaby's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yep, gluten is sneaky and it only takes a tiny amount to cross contaminate you. Your mum sounds fantastic, it sounds like she's been reading up on it. You should also use a separate colander for it (she might have done - you didn't mention it). The toaster will definitely "gluten" you. When I was traveling last year I was desperate to toast the gluten... -
ARCHIVED Girl Scouts And gluten-free (Not)
anabananakins replied to Mizzo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm a Brownie leader (the girls are 7-10). When I first started, before I went gluten free, I have to admit that it totally freaked me out to have girls with nut allergies in our group. I was terrified something would happen, though we were very careful to check labels, I really didn't know how careful to be. In retrospect, I should've sat down with the... -
I was still having trouble with bloating and it turned out to be fructose malabsorption. Onions were the worst offender, since I've cut them out I feel heaps better and no longer look like I'm pregnant.

ARCHIVED A Diet Without Grains?
anabananakins replied to Lockheed's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I eat a low grain diet. I also avoid regular potatoes. For me, it's not because I react to them (besides gluten ones of course) but because I need to keep my carb intake really low to manage my insulin resistance. I do find this balance tricky sometimes. I discussed what I eat with a dietitian and she thinks so long as as I eat fruit and drink milk... -
You have made my day!!!! I'm also in Australia and I'd reconciled myself to never having oats again.

ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed. Confused And Curious!
anabananakins replied to wook's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Wook So, from your mention of TAFE I can see you're a fellow Australian :-) You can get gluten free soy sauce in the same section as regular soy sauce. It works/tastes just the same. I don't live with my parents but my mum keeps that for when I visit. Your parents will want you to be healthy, to live a long and happy life. Gluten free is what... -
ARCHIVED Getting Enough Fibre.
anabananakins replied to OntarioJoe's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I thought I wasn't getting enough fibre even though I ate heaps of veges but it turned out to be because I was eating the wrong fruits and veges. I have problems with frutose, fructans and sorbitol malabsorption so I'm mostly following a low FODMAP diet. Cutting out onion made the biggest difference. I saw a dietitian and she said my fibre intake was... -
ARCHIVED Do You Take Something Or Wait It Out?
anabananakins replied to dube's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It depends where I am. If I am at home or will be home soon after getting glutened, I'll let it run it's course. Otherwise I take immodium.
