  1. It's hard. I used to eat out a few times a week, and mostly asian food. Not any more. All the places I know here are small family run places and I know they are using the same woks over and over. I think the cross contamination is too likely. PF Changs is a good option though. I felt very safe eating there. I also at ate Ben Pao in Chicago and they...
  2. Jenn, I'm so sorry you got so sick from it but it is kind of cool you were sick on their front lawn. That should really help the next gluten intolerant person who comes by. I'm sure that chef will be SUPER careful from now on!
  3. I flew Sydney-LA and return last year with V Australia. The gluten free meal was fine. I think it was steamed chicken breast and vegies for dinner and eggs (scrambled) and vegies for breakfast. Both meals they gave me those thick puffed rice cakes, the ones that taste like nothing. Very, very plain and quite boring, but it was edible and I didn't get sick...
  4. Yep. Day three of being gluten free I had an amazing surge of energy. It's awesome. I used to go to bed at 8pm most nights, waking up at 7am still feeling exhausted. Suddenly it was 11pm and I was still wide awake :-) Even if I have a late night I now wake up feeling good, not like the old, familiar 'so exhausted I could die' feeling. My whole life...
  5. I have eaten food from the Whole Foods salad buffet, but I was pretty nervous about it. I don't like salad buffets at the best of times - too many people have disgusting food safety practices as it is - and the chances of cc are very high. I think it is riskier than a restaurant because they tend to keep the different prep areas more separated (less likely...
  6. BWAHAHAHA! This made me laugh out loud :-) And it's hard because you might not want to confess to being glutened if you can hide it because frankly, I don't want to tell my coworkers or friends that I was stuck in the bathroom with D. I'm sure most people think gluten makes me throw up because I use the euphemism "I thought I was going to be sick" for...
  7. Ha, yeah. My recurring nightmare was having some "nibblies" from a bowl at a party. I'd do that without thinking when I was dieting (to lose weight), I guess my subconcsious didn't trust me not to do it after I went gluten free. And one time I dreamed I was being chased by cupcakes on little legs. adab8ca, I'm so sorry you feel so bad, I hope that...
  8. I agree that it's an interesting and delicate balance. I can feel great eating a low carb diet, but I go through stages when I just die mid session at the gym (I do intense sessions with a trainer). But it does do wonders helping manage my insulin resistance. If I drop the carbs I'm so much less hungry, which in turn makes loosing weight go better...
  9. Gleegan, I've that erad that they offer that as a suggestion, that you can still have the flavour but just not the onion itself. I might give it a try. I cut out the main offenders on the weekend and felt really good in the days since... and then I tried stir fried onions tonight as a test (I had some left, I was curious). UGH! Really bad reaction. Fascinating...
  10. Well yay for feeling better but I'm sorry about the beans. Boo :-( It was nice and cozy in the bubble... but we didn't feel great.
  11. I found a countries one, you have to type in the names and it puts them on the map for you, so it's more remembering than knowing where they are: Open Original Shared Link (I got 103 out of 195 - lots of room for improvement!) And this one for US states: Open Original Shared Link And yes, I spent waaaaaay too much time improving my speed on the states...
  12. Nothing would make me cheat, but I am nearly brought to me knees every now and again but the realisation I can never eat __________ again. They didn't occur to me all at once, which is probably for the best! Some good news though - just as I was facing the prospect of a Hot Cross Bun-less easter, I saw itty bitty gluten free ones in the frozen food section...
  13. That's very encouraging, I remember you've been having a really bad time working it all out. Awesome you are feeling so much better! It's fantastic that this research has come at a time when it could benefit you. It's both fascinating and almost humbling to realise that there was no point in us looking into this 15 years ago. I did find it very interesting...
  14. Thanks Soph! I will look up your dietician, I am really close to St Leonards. I was seeing one last year, to help manage the weight loss/insulin resistance, but while she was very nice I didn't find her very useful. I have joined that group, thank you for the recommendation. It seems like in general there isn't a lot of information out there because...
  15. I had fun with that! I want to try the US states one now (I'm not american)
  16. I've been gluten free since last June, and until recently the bloating was signifcantly improved. However, over the last few months I've been having more digestive issues, and I'm feeling constantly bloated. During this time I've been trying to eat a lot more veges in an effort to lose weight. However, I'm a lazy cook and not terribly fond of veges, and...
  17. Ugh, corn! When I went gluten free (and discovered daily constant stomach aches weren't normal!) I also discovered that corn and I aren't friends. I can tolerate fresh or canned corn (pieces) and popcorn, but ground corn is a no no. Not sure about corn starch in small quantities, I think that's ok. I can't face giving it up as thoroughly as I have gluten...
  18. Ugh, I had not heard about australia changing the levels. Grrr. I don't really eat any pre-packaged gluten free products, because they are all too refined. But I'd like to think they were at least safe.
  19. I can totally relate. Some friends are awesome and totally get it, others just keep saying stupid things! One of my closest friends is really supportive, or at least, comes accross as really supportive, but she said a bunch of stupid things last night, including 'oh well, I'm sure a little bit won't hurt' as another friend of ours was checking ingredients...
  20. I live in Australia and it has my vote. I think it's very easy to be gluten free here. Food is very clearly labeled, and lots of restaurants are knowledgeable. Our smaller population means we don't get the larger range of replacement products available in the US - I found Whole Foods just amazing - but I can live without that stuff, it's worth it for the...
  21. Yeah and a lot of doctors just look at the range and if you're 'normal' you're ok. I don't think that gives the whole picture. For what reason are we at the bottom of the range? My doctor isn't worried about my iron levels, but I'm sitting on the very bottom rung of that ladder. Also there are unrelated issues that could cause problems in the future...
  22. You'll get there! It just takes awhile to get used to. But as soon as I read your message title I realised that I hadn't had a gluten nightmare in ages (by which I mean, dreams where I accidently eat something glute-y and I wake up in a panic trying to spit it out, lol). I think the dreams stopping probably reflects quite well how much more comfortable I...
  23. D'oh, thank you! I knew that (or rather, I have learned and forgotten that a number of times!) Eek. I am very sorry for you and your wife, I hope she is doing ok. I am still eating dairy (though nearly only lactose free milk; I do eat a little cheese and I can tolerate small amounts of yoghurt) but I believe that the symptoms from casein...
  24. I agree with Mushroom. This describes me, and I could not test positive to celiac. I did a 3 month gluten challenge and felt like death warmed up for all of it (plus I gained 15 pounds binging so many gluten-y products!) and my blood work didn't change a bit (thoroughly negative). Went gluten free and felt amazing within a few days. The balance problems...
  25. I guess it depends on whether you'll be eating something that was prepared in the kitchen around the same time as the baking. If was going to someone's house for, say, drinks, and the snacks were coming out of their packaging, I wouldn't worry. But I wouldn't want there to have been flour used if I was going to be preparing food. I stayed with a friend...
