  1. When I was in Charleston I was by myself so I didn't end up eating out. But there was a supermarket in walking distance of downtown and I found that really helpful - I lived on fruit, veges, Chex, yoghurt and I can't remember the brand but I got precooked bacon for protein :-)
  2. I'm in Sydney. I'm trying not to eat processed foods so I'm not really eating much special gluten free stuff anymore. But the australians and newzealanders thread is good, we usually post there when we find something that we like. I google restaurants (if someone else chose them), or use the coeliac society's list. There are a few bloggers doing write...
  3. Thank you Sandsurfgirl. It's good to hear this. I tested negative despite trying my hardest (I did a very painful 4 month challenge) but what can you do? Even I test negative, I'm very clearly intolerant to gluten and I feel amazingly better off it. I resolved to behave as if I had celiac - I'm very strict and it's served me well - but it does sometimes...
  4. Cadbury's website has a good list, the plain dairy milk is fine. I like the rolls they sell (the shape that things like fruit pastells come in), with the little round tablet sized pieces of chocolate. You should be able to get that at the servo, even if they don't have the larger blocks. (also, spending so much time on predominantly US-peopled websites...
  5. You're right, we really do go through those stages. And that means, you'll eventually work your way through and it won't seem so bad anymore. You'll get there, you really will and in the meantime, vent here as much as you want! I feel sad for you because you're really struggling and from what you've said, I don't think you were in really bad health before...
  6. You bring up a good point - we don't have to feel like we have to eat the special food, if we're concerned about it. Or even if we don't want it. We have the right to be not hungry, or not fancying a particular thing, same as anyone else. Generally, someone else would be happy to eat it anyway - especially if no fuss has been made about the freakish special...
  7. It really is a stupid thing to say, isn't it? How would a person who had something terrible to them feel I mean, sure, bread is nice. Gluten-y things tasted great. But once I knew that I couldn't have them any more, I started to move on. It doesn't happen over night, but you get there. Same as I'm sure you eventually learn to cope with not being able to...
  8. Ooh, yeah. That's nasty. Likewise I'm tired of people assuming that I eat a tonne of veges at lunch because I'm dieting to lose weight. Yes, I'd like to be thinner, but I'm eating veges for lunch because they are tasty and easy to bring! Every time some coworker comments I feel like it's a "good for you dieting, fatso!" comment. Sigh. I don't mind being...
  9. I'm so glad it well! Congratulations on your marriage, I wish you and your husband a wonderful life together :-) And good health for you!
  10. It does get a lot better. You're doing great and it's only been a few months for you. I've been gluten free nearly a year and a half now, and I feel so much better about these kinds of situations now. Hang in there - this too shall pass :-)
  11. I'm so sorry to hear this - it's so unfair. I'm glad you've got such a good doctor now though. I hope you're doing well.
  12. Oh, those rice cakes! I haven't had them with Air NZ but they are a staple on V Australia flights, glad wrap and all :-) For petes sake, they might as well just hand us a package of them when we board and forget the rest of the meals. And I find butter is always the first thing to go when you get a special meal. I used to order lacto-ovo vegetarian meals...
  13. Mine have always included dried fruit and other non-fructose friendly things, which makes the side dishes not great. Funny others are heavy on dairy - mine never contain dairy even when there is perfetly safe yoghurt being given to the other passengers.
  14. It's quite enlightening playing around with one of the online food trackers. I don't eat grains at all anymore (maybe the occasional portion of rice in a burrito bowl) and I get more fibre than most people from all the fruits and veges I eat. The fact that they have to enrich regular bread and cereals shows that they aren't doing us much good on their own...
  15. I have insulin resistance and rice is just too starchy for me. A tiny portion (like, a teaspoon but who can stop at that?) is ok but any more and I get a bit high on the sugar rush and then crash. Could it be something like that?
  16. I was just wondering the other day where you'd gone. Congratulations!!!!! Welcome Jacob, yay!
  17. I haven't flown AA but I got gluten containing cookies with one of my gluten free meals once (I think with V Australia). Gah! Lucky we read labels so thoroughly. I think it must've been a well-intending flight attendant thinking my meal looked a bit skimpy. Which it did, but giving me something I couldn't eat wasn't really going to help with that :-). ...
  18. Hee. Sorry, we don't Intersting that the menus are made out of the same paper and design - in Australia (or at least, at the one I eat at), it's totally different. Much smaller and the pages are laminated and bound on the top, so it's a little flip book. It looks like a baby book - the little sister gets jealous
  19. Corn and I parted ways last week. I hear you, I was eating it even though I knew I shouldn't. I don't react to the starches, but ground corn in corn chips, tortillas etc, UGH!
  20. Hey, you're welcome to visit me with that attitude :-). I can promise you my messy kitchen is free from gluten, but man, I loathe doing dishes
  21. Wow, 12. I was 22 - my doctor was all 'you feel half dead because you are half dead!" (below 50 was too low). I'm glad you're feeling better. I take 3000IU/day. I'm much less tired - used to feel weak, achy, run down.
  22. I don't think you need to be diagnosed celiac to have to be on the diet. I tested negative to celiac but I'm clearly gluten intolerant and quite likely have celiac, it's just that testing has a long way to go to catch up (especially with those who have neurological symptoms). I try not to take all of any product off the shelf, regardless what it is...
  23. I love having my own special menu at Outback. I've been to other restaurants where you get a list you can cross check against the regular menu and while it's good to have the info, it can be quite confusing. Outback is easy. I used to mock the place - I'm australian and it is not at all an australian-style restaurant. We go there for the north american...
  24. Thanks for reporting back. That is kind of annoying, it'll make me second guess.
  25. Night Noodle Market - Sydney Open Original Shared Link I googled to see if there would be any gluten free options and I found a blog that mentioned one stall last year had gluten free options - Spanthai. I emailed them and unfortunately didn't hear back before I went last night, but if anyone is going, here is the edited for names) reply: Yes you...
