My super-skinny friend who is almost grain-free and having a tough time gaining weight is eating seeds, nuts, nut butters, lots of olive oil on her salads, and she usually gets wine or a glass of whiskey at the pub. (Lots of calories in alcohol.) I offered to give her my 10 spare pounds, but alas, there is no technology to do so! -

That is exactly my concern. All the stores with bulk bins in my area have gluten foods freely mixed among the naturally gluten-free foods and I am afraid of cross-contamination if they move foods among bins. -

Low total IgA is associated with celiac. You shouldn't worry about it as far as general health, but it is probably what has your regular doctor suspicious of celiac rather htan gluten intolerance. Did all that testing include a celiac panel? You'll want that done before you go gluten-free, as SB2178 mentioned. Also, what was "perfect" for your thyroid? We are starting to realize that what used to be considered high-normal TSH can be an early sign of hypothyroidism. This could very easily be an early stage celiac biopsy. IEL alone can be seen in other inflammatory conditions but the blunting is very suspicious. Is the gluten-free diet giving you some relief? If so, you're probably celiac. -

Three months is not that long if you've been watching her develop celiac disease for two years. I suspected you had taken the quote out of context. You have glossed over the entire point of the article, that the RDA for vitamin D has been increased and that most Americans get the RDA through diet. The RDA is supposed to be a safe, conservative recommendation that will cause no harm if consumed for a lifetime. To my way of thinking, the article... -

OMG me too! It must be the alfredo sauce. It's too rich. OK, marinara sauce is too tomato-y. Nevermind that I don't react to tomatoes. My weight didn't change at all when I went gluten-free. I lost some bloating at my stomach but that's about it. I did gain some recently while I was hypothyroid but that's pretty normal. -

The RDA of B12 is only 6 micrograms. The sublingul you were looking at is 1000 micrograms (1 mg). If you're going to supplement B12, your gummy is a drop in the bucket! -
Last time I got a salad at Subway there were breadcrumbs mixed in with the shredded cheese. Never again.

A "medium to severe" rash reaction in only 30 minutes is most likely true allergy. Does Benedryl help? Also, peanuts are known to be rather allergenic. Also, in your case there would be no functional difference between allergy and intolerance, right? The food makes you sick so you avoid it. -
Well, what I did was an elimination diet. Allergy testing is unreliable, doctors are mostly useless when it comes to sensitivities, and nobody knows your body better than you do. I would not waste money on mail order allergy testing or subject myself to invasive procedures. Pare your diet down to a few foods and see if you feel better. Then you can...

I did the same thing in the middle of my Ph.D. program and decided not to go back to eating gluten. I was actually so desperate to lose the chronic stomach problems that were plaguing me that I did a lamb/rice/lettuce elimination diet. The tests are not that good, and even if you are not celiac by the tests, the diet has changed your health dramatically... -

The SourceNaturals B12 is better anyway because it's methylcobalamin. That's one of the forms your body naturally uses. SourceNaturals is supposed to be a pretty decent brand of vitamin. -

It's not odd at all. Soy cross-reaction is rather common in peanut allergy. Both plants are legumes. -
And by the way, I entertain a LOT and have yet to get glutened at one of my own parties by doing this. Even better, a lot of my friends bring gluten-free foods now, like fruit, cheese, chips marked gluten-free, or even gluten-free cakes from Whole Foods. We have a casein sensitive friend too, so gluten-free/CF even appears.

Give yourself time. You've only been gluten-free for a couple months. Planning issues are going to happen but eventually you will fall into a new routine that allows time for doing what you need to stay healthy.
