  1. Don't lose your mind about the CC to that extent. Most folks are not that sensitive. Sometimes we get sick while we're healing from other food intolerances. Celiacs have "leaky gut" from the damage, so allergenic foods like corn, soy, or nuts can get into the bloodstream before they're fully digested and you react. I used to react to shellfish and soy...

    ARCHIVED Frustration

I'm a little confused as to what your doctor thinks your child has if it isn't celiac. How did your doctor explain the positive TTG IgA result? If I had that on a kid, I'd have him off gluten and be done with it because if he's not celiac, he's probably latent and gluten is reasonably likely to push him into being celiac.
  4. The vast majority of med students don't give a toss about much of anything when it comes to basic biology. It's much like working with undergraduates, where there is an unhealthy concern for what will be on the tests and things are learned by rote rather than by mechanistic understanding.
  5. What a terrible story. Are you feeling a little better gluten-free? I had all sorts of psych problems that resolved with a gluten-free diet and good nutrition. Is there a way you can change doctors? You need someone who will take you seriously.

    ARCHIVED Anemia

Has your doctor considered iron injections? It's possible you're still not healed well enough to absorb as much iron as you need and it may be a while if you've been showing celiac symptoms for five years now.
  7. That could definitely be celiac. Don't be nervous. If you're celiac, you change your diet around and the lifetime of stomach problems disappears in a few months! Figuring out I was celiac changed my life. I had a "nervous" stomach, IBS, gastritis, and would spend days curled up with a heating pad. That's all gone. My stomach is "cast iron" now as long...
  8. I don't know of any reason miralax would affect the test results. Take what you need to keep from feeling too sick!
  9. I usually start searching with a phrase like maybe "autoimmunity mechanism". A list of articles will come up, many of them very detailed. On the right is a little tab where you can select review articles. Look through the reviews to find one that's free online and start reading. You will see related articles on the right too as you're browsing reviews...
  10. Actually iodine deficiency hypothyroidism is fairly rare and there is usually goiter rather than autoimmune antibodies. Hashimoto's is autoimmune and we have the antibodies to prove it. There is no alternative to hormones once your body has systematically destroyed your thyroid gland.
  11. I'd pack Immodium and Pepto Bismol. They help me the most. I'd also eat a lot of rice and the wonderful tropical fruits that are available in that part of the world. Satay from the street vendors should be OK too and I bet you can find rice noodle soups. Thai food is mostly gluten-free when it's prepared traditionally. It's mostly in the US that soy...
  12. I would stick with the diet too. False negatives are common enough on the tests. If you've only been at it two weeks and ate gluten a few times anyway, you might not feel that much better. Give it a couple months truly gluten-free, eating whole foods you cook yourself and see how you're feeling.
  13. 175 is a high dose... if you're absorbing it. I suspect you are absorbing your thyroid medicine better now. A normal replacement dose is more like 125-150 micrograms.
  14. Spend some quality time on Pubmed instead of Google. Pubmed is a database of peer-reviewed scientific literature run by the National Library of Medicine. It's a little harder to read, and sometimes finding a full article requires a trek to your local campus biomedical library, but more and more articles are available online for free and you can learn...
  15. Your child definitely needs a celiac panel at the doctors office, and tell the doctor he has a copy of DQ8 and celiac antibodies in his stool. Do this before you make any changes to his diet because celiac tests are only accurate in people eating wheat. Then you should try the gluten-free diet, as your child will probably feel better off gluten and possibly...
  16. I would go with pasta because all that's in it is flour and water. There is no yeast to confuse the issue. Cream of wheat would be fine too.
  17. Corn flour is just ground corn. It's fine.
  18. Um... That's a really bad article. It's taking some legitimate science and spinning a ridiculous story from it. Note the complete lack of scientific references and all the scare words.
  19. The severity of villous damage is very poorly correlated to the numbers on the bloodwork. It just means your antibodies are making it out of your gut to the bloodstream. The only way I know of to spend $600 a month on food is if you're eating far too much processed food. Rice, potatoes, beans, fruit, vegetables, and a little meat, fish, and eggs should...
  20. I've been taking Renew Life Ultimate Flora and it worked well for me. The Renew Life bottle says it is gluten-free but may contain traces of soy or dairy from the fermentation process so that one depends on how soy-sensitive you are. I've also used Threelac, but the bacterial strains in it are a little controversial. It is gluten-free and soy-free but it...
  21. I do fine with teff. I like to add a little to bread recipes for the great flavor. I think my teff flour was Bob's Red Mill, so it was tested for gluten. I've eaten pure teff Ethiopian injira bread with no issues either. I don't know anything about that brand of tortillas. You might do a little digging to see if you can find out whether they are on shared...
  22. Your MIL is not entirely well-meaning if she gets defensive and angry when you get sick. She has an agenda and you have challenged it in some way. Sometimes the best way to deal with in-laws is to get your husband to do the negotiating. (I'm assuming you're female like much of this board. Please forgive me and substitute wife for husband if I have guessed...
  23. I use uva ursi and it's helpful stuff, but never for more than a few days. Everything I've read on herbalist sites states that it can irritate the kidneys and damage the liver if overused. The usual recommendation is no longer than 4-5 days. There is another good trick for urinary problems. Take a gram of cheap, fast-dissolving vitamin C before you...
  24. You would have to know which test and the normal range to know what the 33 means. I'm sorry to hear you're sick, and that it's at a bad time. I find Immodium really helpful to keep from needing to run for the bathroom. It makes me a little drowsy so you might try a little earlier in the week to see how you react to it. Pepto Bismol helps me too, especially...
  25. What a pleasant surprise. Thanks for sharing your story.
