  1. Anti-gliadin IgA shows that your immune system recognizes gluten as something to attack, and that you're probably celiac. Anti-gliadin IgG is actually not as specific for celiac unless you're IgA deficient so the negative result doesn't mean much. Anti-TTG is the autoimmune antibody that causes such trouble in celiac disease, and you don't have enough that...
  2. They spiked to 1 ug/mL. I'm sleepy, but isn't that about 1 ppm? For this purpose, two late-lactation Holstein cows (Bos taurus) were initially fed a corn-containing diet. The corn portion of the diet was slowly changed to wheat, from 0% to 25%, 50%, 75%, 82.5%, and 100% wheat. Each experimental diet was fed ad libitum for 3 d before milk sample collection...
  3. I would skip the dairy entirely. It is most likely that he is reacting to casein, one of the proteins in milk. You could try a little Lactaid milk to test for lactose intolerance. When I first figured out my problems, I could eat goat dairy but not cow. I'd minimize "gluten-free" bread mixes and Udi's for now if you can find enough other foods for...
  4. Have you run across this info, Yolo? It's very helpful as far as food chemical intolerances. Open Original Shared Link Your sugar addiction sure sounds familiar. Darned stuff. I have such a love/hate relationship with it. There is a deli near me where I can buy a little square of wonderful French dark chocolate for 25 cents. I get one once a...
  5. Do remember that celiac tests don't work gluten free. You'll probably want to get the celiac panel run on the child you suspect has gluten issues just to be sure it's not celiac. Good luck and I hope you figure out the allergies/intolerances!

    ARCHIVED Worth Getting Diagnosed?

If you are willing to stick to a celiac diet and are feeling healthy, there is no reason to get any further testing. Celiac tests are inaccurate and even if you poison yourself for a few months, you may get false negatives. I've had three doctors in a row now tell me to stay on the diet and not bother with testing because it's so hard to get a positive result...
  7. Did you see that warning from moderators not to bump old threads? This is exactly what they were talking about.
  8. It IS interesting! Like Tarnalberry says, food has to get absorbed through the digestive system before it makes it to the milk. Cows have four stomachs, one full of bacteria, fungi, and protozoa and special digestive enzymes that break down fiber and other plant matter that is indigestible to humans. They also chew a cud, as you probably know, which helps...
  9. Welcome to the board. I'm sorry your son is so sick. It must be scary. Definitely take him off dairy. I know the gluten-free/casein-free diet is hard, but some celiacs really have trouble digesting dairy until they are healed. He may be able to reintroduce dairy once he's feeling better. Also, make sure he's not eating oats. Some celiacs react to the...
  10. None of the food allergy tests are that accurate. You have to use the tests to guide an elimination diet. Blood is somewhat better than skin prick. As far as gluten, it's best for them to get a celiac blood test to start. If your child is not celiac, you can look to stool or simply try eliminating gluten. Eliminating gluten from the diet and seeing...
  11. I believe the deamidated gliadin IgA is supposed to be more sensitive. We've seen others who had negative panels and went back to have DGP done and it was positive.
  12. My hope is that the rectal or oral challenge studies that detect activated T-cells will be worked into a diagnostic test. That way we won't have to gluten up to learn whether we're celiac.
  13. I don't think you are alone either. My own sensitivity comes and goes but I'm not to where I react to 1 ppm. I try to eat whole foods I prepare myself for the most part because of those studies on refractory celiac. Besides, it's healthier anyway. I'm really starting to appreciate how bad processed foods are for us.
  14. Well, like I said wheat grass theoretically contains no gluten. The thing that scares me is unsprouted seeds, or grass that gets pulled up by the roots so the seed comes with it. There are so many other healthy things to eat other than wheat grass, why take the chance?
  15. That must be hard with the miscarriages. I think you are truly celiac and you risk getting really sick glutening yourself back up, especially with the new wheat allergy. You still may get a negative blood test. Some people just don't seem to send antibodies out into the blood very much, even if they're really sick with celiac. Can you qualify for the genetic...
  16. Cookies? Forget that. Make chocolate truffles! Open Original Shared Link Other great holiday goodies that are naturally gluten-free are stuffed dates, pecan turtles, and fudge.
  17. Oh, gosh. I always keep an emergency snack in my desk for that kind of situation. I hope you don't get too sick. For me, gluten hits 4-6 hours after and keeps going for a few days but everyone is different. I haven't eaten that much in years though. Pepto Bismol really helps my stomach. As far as the sleeping, have you had your thyroid checked recently...
  18. Where did you read wheat grass is not wheat? Everything I've read says it's Triticum aestivum, or common wheat. There is supposedly no gluten in the grass but I'm afraid of it. It sprouted from poison.
  19. I never knew my oranges were making other people happy! That's neat.
  20. Interesting. Cows and people have pretty different digestive systems so it's hard to go across species. I bet that study is what lead to the cow study. They fed the cows in the study 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% wheat so it really seems like they should have picked up gluten if it were coming through the milk. It's hard to imagine a cow fed 100% wheat wouldn...
  21. Welcome and I'm glad you're feeling better. The blood tests for celiac have a fairly high false negative rate. It's estimated at 20%. You could still be celiac. For you there is essentially no difference since you sound like you are healthiest on a celiac diet. I was never formally diagnosed, but I don't worry about it. I eat a celiac diet and the...
  22. I know that feeling. With me it's starchy foods or refined sugar. It's so easy for me to hop on the carbohydrate blood sugar roller-coaster. I can't keep cookies or chips around the house because I will keep grabbing another handful all day until the package is gone. I wake up the next day feeling exhausted and craving even more carbs. Aged cheese...
  23. Good luck! I hope you feel better on the diet. By the way, a lot of people find it really helpful to go off dairy at first too. I think people are overly attached to diagnostic labels too. Gluten makes me sick. I don't eat it.
  24. Flu made me much worse. That's when the gluten started really affecting my mind as well as my GI system.
  25. I personally wouldn't bother with regular gliadin if you can get the deamidated gliadin. Deamidated is more sensitive and far more specific. No harm in asking for TTG as well.
