ARCHIVED Where To Go From Here?
Skylark replied to jennifer47's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
A couple things. I am self-diagnosed and I am as careful as anyone with a full celiac diagnosis. Gluten makes me sick in many ways and I am fairly certain I am actually celiac. If I get sloppy with my diet and stop worrying about trace amounts of gluten, I find I get tired and run-down. Three days in Mexico eating lightly CC'd food had me sleepy, my... -
ARCHIVED Corn Gluten Allergy But Not Corn Allergy?
Skylark replied to BaileysMom's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
You can have allergies or sensitivities to all sorts of different foods. Celiac does not exclude corn allergy. There is no evidence of celiac-type reactions with the autoimmunity from corn in the literature, so you probably only need to worry about whatever amount of corn makes you ill. Follow your natural inclination and avoid eating food that makes you... -
ARCHIVED Benihana Restaurant's Response
Skylark replied to BethM55's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
It's always fun watching the teppanyaki chefs at Benihana, even if the food they make is all gluten-y. Their website says some of the restaurants have sushi. If you're fond of sushi, that might be an option. Simple sushi like a tuna roll or sashimi and steamed rice is gluten-free and edamamae are always good if you tolerate soy. -
ARCHIVED Streaming Nose
Skylark replied to loubyloo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If I get glutened I sometimes wake up the next morning with sinus pain, sneezing, and often with a runny nose. -
Why don't you make an account and learn to edit? The idea of a wiki is that anyone can contribute, not that you ask people do do it for you. Here's directions and there is a sandbox (meaning a fake test site) for practicing. Open Original Shared Link

ARCHIVED Benihana Restaurant's Response
Skylark replied to BethM55's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Teppanyaki is the food they cook in front of you. And no, it's not a good idea to eat it as the griddle will be CC'd from soy sauce. -
ARCHIVED Looks Like I Have A Gluten Free Child
Skylark replied to Roda's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The deamidated gliadin peptide (DGP) is both IgA and IgG but most of the research I've seen uses the IgG version for everyone. Anti-endomysial is a specialized test that is done by hand, so not all labs offer it, but the DGP is amenable to normal ELISA equipment. Four days shouldn't make a difference, but after couple weeks he might start to lose antibodies... -
OMG. It's supposed to be rice, salt, sugar, and rice vinegar. How the heck to you add wheat to that.

ARCHIVED Oceanspray And Fruits In General
Skylark replied to fakename's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks. That one threw me for a loop. I've never seen gluten-dusted fruit either. -
I usually keep it simple. Tuna roll or a Philadelphia roll, and then some nigiri like tuna (maguro), yellowtail (hamachi), shrimp (ebi), or toro. I sometimes order scallop nigiri, if I can make sure it's whole scallops and not chopped scallops in sauce. And don't forget the edamame. As far as I know, the pickled ginger is safe. If you can find it, San...

Hi there. Don't panic. For starters, you can fish your teabags out of the trash because the wheat paste thing is an urban legend. You do need to replace your cutting board, since it's hard to clean well, any wooden spoons, and perhaps your colander. If you have a vertical toaster you can't clean really well, you'll need to replace that as well. ...

ARCHIVED What The Heck Is Candida?
Skylark replied to mommyto3's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Trying a little vitamin B and magnesium won't hurt. You could also be reacting to the amoxicillin itself, so keep a close watch for any other signs of allergy. Here is a list of things to watch for. Open Original Shared Link Like everyone else here, I need lots of probiotics when I'm on an antibiotic. I eat a couple containers of yogurt a day, and pick... -
I assume you have ruled out pregnancy? Stop eating oats if you have them as part of your diet. Try cutting out dairy first, then soy. Those are our biggies. Other problem foods can be corn and the remaining "big 8" allergens - eggs, fish, peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish.

ARCHIVED Progresso Soup
Skylark replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I love the clam chowder and lentil. I've been eating Progresso soups for a long time, since I figured out some had no wheat ingredients listed on the labels. It's nice that they are confirming the gluten-free status. -
ARCHIVED MSG Has Gluten In It Right?
Skylark replied to norahsmommy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I love the table in that article, showing the glutamate content of human breast milk (10x higher than cow's milk). It is possible to be hypersensitive to MSG, but unusual. To avoid glutamate, you would have to remove foods like tomato juice, parmesean cheese, and aged beef from your diet as well as all the hydrolyzed proteins on food labels that have... -
ARCHIVED Looks Like I Have A Gluten Free Child
Skylark replied to Roda's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Any way you can get either of the better blood tests before you take him off gluten? Your doctor ordered the less accurate tests. The ones to ask for are deamidated gliadin peptide IgG and anti-endomysial IgA. If either of those is positive, you have a much better case for celiac without the biopsy. -
ARCHIVED Questions About Diagnosis
Skylark replied to LonelyWolf307's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm glad you're feeling better! Who cares what the doctors think? Besides, I've never been told I was nuts when I tell doctors that years of chronic diarrhea and gastritis went away when I stopped eating gluten. -
ARCHIVED How Much Do You Spend On Groceries?
Skylark replied to snifter's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm in one of those ridiculous parts of California and I'm at $200+ a month for one person. I don't eat a lot of weird/expensive foods either. Cheese, milk, meats, and produce are just generally expensive here. -
ARCHIVED Tips Regarding Food
Skylark replied to dlcummings's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Wheat gluten is pretty much in all flour so if you're gluten sensitive the pot stickers would be as bad as a similar amount of bread or pasta. My reactions to rye and barley are milder, but they are different grains. You may be reacting to other things you eat with the wheat. Yeast is one thing to look at, since there isn't yeast in pot stickers, but... -
ARCHIVED How Long Does It Take To Get Your Energy Back? Or Does It Ever Come Back?
Skylark replied to Nomi's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My GI issues improved within a couple weeks gluten-free, but I'm sorry to say it took me months to get my energy back. I think I've had gluten issues for most of my life so it's not surprising I didn't feel better instantly. -
ARCHIVED What Do You Do When You Are Dairy And Soy Intolerant As Well?
Skylark replied to norahsmommy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Earth Balance has a dairy-free, soy-free margarine. I used rice milk some, and Rice Dream has reforumlated all their rice milk to be gluten-free so it should be easier to find. I also found I could tolerate a little goat or sheep cheese during my casein-free phase. I mostly shifted my cooking style over to oil and vinegar marinades and salad dressings... -

ARCHIVED Emergen-c
Skylark replied to VegasCeliacBuckeye's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Argh! Thanks so much for sharing that. I never would have thought there would be gluten in Emergen-C. Good thing I like the orange. -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed...and Angry!
Skylark replied to Echarais's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I missed this thread. Heck yes, I'm angry. I was tested for celiac as an infant but I had already been taken off wheat because it made me colicy. Because that test was negative, I was diagnosed with wheat allergy and encouraged to adopt a normal diet in my teens. (Childhood wheat allergy often goes away.) I went through my 20s exhausted after a bad bout...
