  1. Revenant, if your mom is a regular drinker you may have genetic tendencies to alcoholism. Going off gluten and losing the fog from gluten may have triggered it. I have two friends who got absolutely amazing help from Alcoholics Anonymous. As Raven mentions, Alateen is the teenage specific group but you can go to general AA meetings too if you need. There...
  2. Hey, how are you feeling? I hope you didn't get too sick.
  3. Deamidated gliadin is supposed to be IgG. He probably should have had anti-TTG IgA though.
  4. ((( hug ))) You might have to ask them to be sure there is nothing but M&Ms in your sonic blast. Say you have a "severe wheat allergy" and they will be more careful. You might get sick but you will get through it and be OK. (Which isn't much consolation but it's all I can really say since we can't "undo" gluten.) The one thing I'm thankful for...
  5. TSH going up is the first sign of thyroid trouble. It means your brain is signaling for more thyroid, but your thyroid gland is already working at capacity. Basically, you have no capacity to increase thyroid production when you need more hormone. The thyroid medicine will take the pressure off your overburdened thyroid gland and then if your body needs...
  6. From my Chinese cookbook: Sweet and sour sauce 1 cup water 1/2 c. distilled white vinegar 1/2 c. sugar 1/4 c. tomato paste 4 tsp. cornstarch. Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Boil and stir 1 minute. One note - it's best to make the cornstarch into a smooth paste with a tbsp or...
  7. Hi there. The new problems could be the prilosic. GERD is often caused by celiac, and doctors don't realize it. I go to potlucks all the time. I always take a dish that I'm happy to eat for dinner by itself. I bring something like a lentil pilaf, a pot of chile, jambalaya, or some other complete meal and I set aside my own portion if people aren't...
  8. If I were in your situation, I think I would send a card and letter with no return address. It sounds like you won't be happy with yourself if you learn at some point in the future that your birth mother has been suffering with undiagnosed celiac. The genetic connection with celiac is estimated 1 in 20, but I think there is also gluten intolerance in celiac...
  9. Is there a P.F. Chang's restaurant in your area? They do gluten-free Chinese food.
  10. You make some very good points. I'm in a debating mood, so I'll reply some more. I share your frustration with the hucksters selling useless enzymes and the people who want to dismiss gluten intolerance (which is probably early celiac disease in a lot of people). To be honest, I am deeply disturbed by all the people on this forum who require an official...
  11. I get them too, but only when I eat gluten. I'd go over everything carefully for gluten cross-contamination.
  12. There was just a conversation in another thread about people being unable to eat tapioca. Apparently sensitivities to it are common. Maybe it's the tapioca or buckwheat.
  13. I wouldn't eat it.
  14. Yes, she sounds like she has gluten issues. If she's mostly gluten-free the testing will not be reliable though. It's so hard to have to gluten challenge to get good tests.
  15. Yeah, I'd avoid the pizza parties for now. She will find them easier in a year or two, at which point she will sit there with food she has brought for herself wondering how people can eat all that gross-looking wheat and not get sick. I think it would be great to take her to a support group meeting. Walking into a roomful of strangers can be daunting...
  16. Sounds like you have all sorts of reasons to avoid wheat! Have you talked to an allergist? Wheat allergies are thought to be a childhood thing but there are a lot of us on the board who can tell you otherwise. The numb lips and tongue swelling sounds like true allergy, especially if it starts within a few minutes of when you eat. So is the throat...
  17. Either "I'm celiac" or "I have celiac disease". And for what it's worth, people saying "Celiac's" drive me batty. It's not a name, it's an ancient Greek word. Sorry, had to get that off my chest.
  18. If a food makes you sick, don't eat it! There is a such thing as gluten intolerance, where you come up normal on the tests but still get sick from gluten. That delayed reaction is very typical of an intolerance too.
  19. It is a well-designed test, with comparable accuracy to doctor-ordered tests, and the same limitations of any other anti-TTG IgA blood test. You have to have normal total IgA, you have to be eating a "normal" amount of gluten for 6-8 weeks before you test, and it has about a 20% false negative rate. You do sound celiac, and even if that test comes up negative...
  20. You are not missing anything by skipping the biopsy. If you have other GI problems, they can be found later while you are gluten-free. Bloodwork and response to the diet is plenty of evidence that you're celiac.
  21. Why do you take issue with that statement? Most commercial bleached flour is fortified with vitamins and often iron. Most average Americans don't take a vitamin or if they do it's something so cheap it can't really be absorbed like One-A-Day. People who go gluten-free and substitute rice and tapioca flour breads without taking a decent supplement miss...
  22. Hi there. You're very kind to post about your girlfriend. Making sure she has gluten-free food with you is great, as is taking her out to restaurants with gluten-free selections on the menu. If she is newly diagnosed, she may find you eating foods she can no longer have like pizza or cookies in front of her upsetting. It doesn't bother me if my date...

    ARCHIVED Bruising

For future spills, I have found a 10% dilution of helichrysum essential oil to be nearly magical. You put it on the "oopsie" right when you get hurt and keep treating every couple hours for the rest of the day. It helps the pain and you won't bruise nearly as badly. I use a good corsican helichrysum, usually from Nature's Gift. Open Original Shared Link...
  24. If money is an issue for the testing, she can simply go gluten-free. It's good to know if you're celiac, but the pregnancy is much more important than a firm diagnosis. She can always challenge later. Also, some cities have celiac centers that screen for free. You could look into that. Biocard also might be a more affordable option. Here's the Canadian...
  25. Wow, that's quite the compliment.
