Mari's Achievements

  1. Hi - sorry for your problems. When I was younger I use to get weak and shaky after eating sweets, pancakes and syrup really sent me into a downward spiral. I learned that if I ate a high protein food when I had something sweet or hi carbs that helped a lot, ice cream and peanuts was one of my favorites. When craving sweets I found just walking around for a while and doing something - not strenuous exercise - the weakness and craving would recede. Look at the Specific Carbohydrate Diet - I have found it to be a good food guide. Some people with intestinal yeasts develop an overgrowth of Candida in their gut and people with that problem crave sweets. Drs have some treatments for that but many people choose to treat it with herbs and diet and claim it is more effective. Antibiotics in the past and a hi carbohydrate diet might be a cause especially if you have had Candida in the past. Curezone has a forum which might help you.

  2. What you have it seems to me is a type of gastroenteritis - enteric bacteria in the gut who carry toxin producing genes from whatever caused your first episode of diarrhea. Those bad guys may be gone but viruses in your gut can transfer the toxin gene into the normal enteric bacteria - (your Dr may not have read this as it is new research). There are some Drs who treat with antibiotics but not very successfully. You can kill some of these off by taking the common spice turmeric (info online), cinnamon, hot peppers. Taking probiotics or plain yogurt will help by adding back good bacteria to your gut. Finding ways to improve the health of your digestive system - Look at the Forums at CureZone to see what others do.

Fruit and veggies don't have enough fiber. Get an over the counter fiber supplement or just use oat bran - always mixed in with your meals and drink lots of water.

I find drinking strong peppermint or spearmint tea helps with pain and cramping. There have been several posts about PeptoBismo which you can look up.

Make sure he orders specific tests for celiac disease - anti-gladin, anti-tissue transglutaminase and endomysin (sp?)

You may want to look at the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. I have found it very helpful - it's gluten free and helps people with IBS and celiac disease.

I find that I can reduce nausea by sitting up straingt or lying down and pressing my fingers down toward my lower spine firmly but not too hard. Sometimes food gets congested in my esophagus and upper small intestine and that helps pass it down.

  3. Microcytic anemia is the usual type of anemia associated with celiac disease.

It is much easier to intrepret more specific tests. My first blood test was a Celiac Panel and included tests for anti - glaidin, anti-tissue transglutaminase and nowdays a Celiac Panel includes an endomysin test.

What's more important than convincing the DRs that your child has celiac disease is your conviction that he must learn to lead a gluten free life. He has the symptoms and does better gluten free. If you now order the genetic marker test and they are positive for a predisposition to develop celiac disease then you have evidence that this is the problem. There are several labs online where you can order the genetic tests, I used Enterolab.com. In addition Enterolab can do the specific antibody tests on feces which are more sensitive and accurate than the blood tests and also test for food allergies and fecal fat levels. Their website has lots of information.

  4. It looks like you have one or two HLA DQ 2 markers and that means that you are predisposed to developing Celiac Disease. I can't tell exactly what test they did - they call it a molecular test which may not mean they actually determined which DQ allele(s) you inherited so we can't tell whether you are high risk or low risk. Call the lab which did the test and ask them to tell you what it means and if you would get more information if you had the DNA marker test.

  5. I found that 14 hours or even a several day fast wasn't enough time to stop gas formation even tho most of the food had come thru. The bacteria which cause fermentation in the gut can produce an amazing amount of gas from a small amount of carbohydrates. Your symptoms suggest to me that your intestinal flora are out of balance and you have toxin producing bacteria in the mix and possibly yeasts. Gluten is a high in carbohydrates and these organisms grow too well in it.

I can think of two common causes of the pain you have - one is the gluten autoimmune reaction which in me causes inflamation and swelling of the small intestine. This impedes the partially digested food from progressing through you giving the bacteria and yeasts plenty of time to cause an explosion of gas. Gas pains can be intensely painful. Getting the small intestine to clear out can be difficult, magnesium laxatives only work on the large intestine so you need to increase peristalsis in the small intestine. I use a herbal laxative, Cascara sangrada and other herbal laxatives are available at most health food stores. Some seem to get relief using PeptoBismo. Cut down on carbohydrates and take more digestive enzymes even between meals. Increase probiotics and yogurt. The spice turmeric amy help - information and instructions online.

The other is that your bile system is conjested. It is not uncommon to have this problem with no indication on the ultrasound. When there is congestion in the bile duct it tends to also partially obstruct the pancreatic duct which is right next to it so you are low in pancreatic enzymes. If this persists you might want to look at the CureZone Liver Flush Support Forum to see what other people do.

Hope this helps and let us know if you go back to normal on a gluten-free diet.

  6. Result Comments from the lab:

Results may support a diagnoses of Celiac Disease, but are not specific. IgG serologocial marker for Celiac Disease detected

I think this is the most significant finding. The serological tests which were relied on before genetic (DNA) marker tests became available were quite good and correlated with Celiac Disease. I didn't realize that some labs were still using them but they are much less expensive than DNA marker tests and cut down on the expense of screening for celiac disease. If your child has been gluten-free the tests you have done now may all be negative. Now would be a good time to have the genetic test done - it will help you decide what to do and what the child needs to learn to protect herself as she gets older.

  7. The other responses were very good but I just wanted to add that celiac disease is a multigenetic disorder. Testing the DQ gene is more than 99% accurate for telling if a person has the predisposition to develop autoimmune celiac disease. Everybody has a DQ gene and inherits one from each parent. Each DQ gene has 2 parts, called allele 'a' and allele 'b'. Enterolab only tests for what kind of b allele is present, one from mom and one from dad. There is an amazing variety of DQ alleles which were caused by small changes (mutations) during the course of human history. Most of these alleles do not cause any problems. Most of the alleles which predispose to celiac disease are DQ2 alleles and DQ8 alleles.

Several other genes are sometimes involved in celiac disease, one is the DR gene close to the DQ gene on Chromosome 6 and others are on other chromosomes.

The DQ alleles have been sorted into group DQ 1 through DQ8 and each has been given a number. My Enterolab report read HLA DQ2 b allele 0302 and HLA DQ2 b allele 0602. A note said that 0302 was a main celiac allele and the 0602 would make the disease worse. I was at high risk (77%) and did develop symptoms as a young child. The 0302 also predisposes to Type 1 autoimmune Diabetes which a brother got and but I did not.

  8. I read a similar study several years ago. In that study the researchers found that 30% of Celiacs were 'hard core' smokers - more than 5 cigarettes a day. I think they concluded that smoking was in some way beneficial to Celiacs.

Tobacco is used as a dewormer in horses and there is one alternative PhD researcher who had a theory that all autoimmune diseases are caused by the presence in the body of specific parasites and specific pollutants/toxins. In searching through her books I found 2 cases where she had treated 2 people, an infant and a young child with gluten problems by killing parasites and removing the pollutants. There was not enough information to draw any conclusions but it is interesting. I think at best that this type of treatment could reduce the risk of celiac disease but would not 'cure' the disease once the autoimmune reaction was triggered tho killing off the parasites a person carries and doing detoxification programs leaves a person healthier.

  9. Since many of us Celiacs are left with intestinal problems even after going on a gluten-free diet this article would be informative.

Three Keys to Healthy Bowel Movements

Your bowel movements are excellent indicators of your overall health. Since food provides the fuel for energy production, it follows that a fully functional gastrointestinal tract is crucial. Your stomach, bowel and liver need to be in tiptop working order in order to do their job, which is extracting, processing and absorbing nutrients from your meals.

    The process

Food as it is consumed is not in a state to provide energy to the body. First it must be broken down into particles small enough to cross the plasma membrane of your cells. Enzymes manufactured in the small intestine, combined with pancreatic enzymes and bile from the liver, aid in digesting proteins, carbohydrates and fats. The mix is absorbed through the intestinal wall and transported to the liver, where it is further metabolized and made available as an energy source.

    The large intestine

The large intestine, which processes the residue from this procedure, is host to good intestinal flora such as acidophilus which help to move everything along to the rectum, stimulating defecation.

The importance of regular bowel movements

A complete and satisfying morning bowel movement is essential for optimum energy levels. A sluggish bowel creates a sluggish body, while optimal colon function prevents toxic buildup and ensures energy and vitality.

    Shape and size

As we mentioned earlier, your bowel movements are excellent indicators of your overall health.. If you have small, marble-sized movements, for example, that could mean you are dehydrated. Bowel movements need sufficient water, oil and. Sufficient water and roughage produce soft but formed bowel movements, about the size and shape of small bananas. Oil (olive oil is ideal because it helps the body in other ways, too) aids with frequency and helps prevent constipation.

Three keys to healthy bowel Movements

While it is beyond the scope of this article to go into specific foods that are good to eat for optimal bowel function, here are three items you should consume every day to ensure normal movements.

Water eight to ten glasses a day

Fiber bran cereals, whole grain products

    Oil olive oil on salads

In a future article, we will discuss bowel-friendly foods in more detail.

  10. I still have fluid retention after 4 years gluten-free. Since good kidney function is necessary to remove excess water from the body you might be helped by doing kidney cleanses. Some kinds of parasites cause water retention and people who do herbal parasite programs usually loose several pounds. I react to cow's milk with swollen ankles and legs so going cow dairy free may help. Other allergies and toxin build-up in the body can cause edema so elimination diets may help as may detoxification programs.

  11. When I worked in medical labs coffee grounds in the feces or stomach contents always meant blood and the occult blood test was always positive. For a few years before I was diagnosed I would sometimes pass coffee grounds in my feces. I was bleeding in my upper intestine and when I would do gall bladder flushes I would pass more. The gluten free diet helped but whenever my gall bladder would become congested with stones and 'sludge' I would have more bleeding. Some people might be advised to have their gall bladder out but after reading about gall bladder problems I decided to take the advice of other people I found in forums and books and improve the health of my whole digestive system. This has worked quite well tho it has taken the whole 4 years I have been gluten-free. What has helped me most is having the DNA marker test - it convinced me that I am sensitive to gluten even tho my lab results did not give clear results.

  12. I would stop the vitamins. I have better results taking pure individual supplements as mixtures all seem to contain something I am intolerant or sensitive to and it may not be gluten. I always check the label of a supplement or med to see if it is gluten free, if gluten is not listed at all on the label I dont take it. If Pamela's cookies have any gluten find a gluten free alternative. Once you are gluten free any amount of gluten will start off the autoimmune reaction. I have been eating ARICO Double Chocolate Gluten Free Cookies - no problems unless I eat too many at one time but it is only 4 years on a gluten-free diet that I have been able to tolerate this much carbohydrate.

  13. If you want to go the next step and get rid of these occasional problems so you won't have fare-ups read about Clostridia in the intestinal tract. Drs will treat this with antibiotics if it gets bad but there are some alternative programs which work quite well. Two of the Clostridia which grow in our intestine and cause problems are C. dificile and C. Tetani - both produce toxins which partially paralyze the intestinal muscles.

I use the herbal laxative Cascara sangrada which works well for me and also take digestive enzymes - not with food but between meals whenever I feel blocked.

  14. Kayle - Ghee is clarified butter and contains milk protein. I have an allergy to cow's milk and cannot tolerate even a tiny bit of butter.

The spice turmeric may help cool down the inflamation in your gut - recepies and information online about that and other common antiinfalmatory herbs.

Peppermint or Spearment tea will help - make it strong by boiling water then adding a tablespoon or more then steep for 5 or more minutes. It is also very calming.

Hope this helps and you get better soon.

  15. Since you have most likely not completely healed from the damage to your small intestine and were being glutened you have picked up more harmful agents - organisms and polutants/toxins - than a normal person. It is best to deal with these before you develop chronic problems. What I would do would be to find a good program which treats parasites and improves the ability of your kidneys and liver to eliminate toxins. Consulting an alternate health professional may help you most, Drs do have some methods but are not as good at this type of thing. There are several programs online and in books - Hulda Clark's and Andre Moritz' are popular and help many people. The Liver Flush Support Forum at Curezone will give you information on what others are doing for your type of problems.

  16. What's happening is that the food you eat is putrifying in your gut. This is caused by bacteria which are digesting the protein in your food. There are various bacteria which do this and indicates that your intestinal bacteria are unbalanced. If this happened after you ate dairy the bacteria is most likely an enteric toxin producing organism from milk. Pasturized milk is not sterile and can carry low levels of these bacteria which a person with normal stomach acids and a healthy intestine won't have a problem with. Some of these organisms are pathogens which won't cause severe symptoms - gastroenteritis - but will hang around inside you until you kill them off and re-establish a good balance of bacteria again. The spice Turmeric will kill off some of them - there are several recepies and information online. Some people also use cinnamon and hot peppers. I also use a special iodine solution safe for humans available online (be sure to follow the directions). Dr. Hulda Clark has a Bowel Program to treat this type of infection.

Some measures to take - Boil all dairy to kill off bacteria to avoid more infections and eat only cooked food until you get better. Kill the bacteria on your hands, counters, all bathroom surfaces - some people use diluted ethyl alcohol or Vodka. You can easily reinfect youself. Never eat with your hands or put fingers in your mouth. Never touch any meat, poultry or fish while preparing them. I wear gloves and work on a newspaper outside on the deck to avoid contaminating counter surfaces.

Take Betaine-HCl or diluted HCl to kill off bacteria in food in the stomach and the top of the small intestine.

  17. I used to get canker sores, sore mouth and had white plaque on my tongue. The canker sores were usually in one place and very painful. I would also get white sores in my nostrils, usually after dental appointments. I have read that the white plaques are common in Celiacs and with me they disappeared after I did herbal parasite programs. The canker sores persisted until I went gluten-free and now occur rarely.

An allergy to hot peppers leaves me with burning lips, sore mouth and swolen throat. I even react to peppers which are very mild but not bell peppers.

I also find that when I get weak muscles from a food or chemical reaction I tend to bite the insides of my cheeks.

  18. I have found several things I can do. With me it is usually that my neck or upper spine is slightly out of line or my neck muscles are too tight and are affecting the flow of blood to my head. First I press on the muscles which hold up my head, firmly and on both sides until the muscles are relaxed. Then, while sitting up straight, I put the sides of my hands under the ridges at the bottom of the skull under my ears and press upward and then rotate my head slowly back and forth. The heels of my hands are under my jaws and my fingers are under the skull. Do this gently and with even pressure on each side. Some people don't advise doing this type of thing because using too much force or pressing unevenly can be counterproductive. But if you are having problems and need to do something just to deal with a problem and are miles from home you may want to learn to do these procedures.

It helps to strengthen the neck muscles. One chiro. told me to do this. Lay flat on a solid surface and try to raise your head up without using your upper back to push up. I couldn't do this at first so used my hands to push up my head and after a while the muscles began to strengthen and after a few weeks I could do it without using my hands. Another chiro. told me that people with chemical sensitivities have an instinctive reaction in which the head jerks back and that can put the neck vertabrae slightly out of line.

  19. I have gotten joint pains - usually bilateral - left and right joint - after being glutened as the autoimmune reaction gets going. I learned to use ace bandages which both supported the joint and helped reduce the swelling. When I was first going gluten-free the swelling and pain was really bad and since I am intolerant to anti-inflamatory meds including advil I learned to use turmeric and cinnamon. The Dr. thought I might have Rheumatiod Arthritis since the swelling was bilateral but if I stay gluten-free my joints are OK except for some old skiing injuries in my knees and the wear on my wrists from years of wood carving and gardening. The Dr. had me using alternating cold and hot packs and that helped too.

  20. I was able to eat grain-free using the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. I find this diet satisfying - my staple foods were vegetables, winter squash, meats and poultry and found a source of organic, gluten-free goat's milk yogurt. There is a recepie book available. Using this diet I have been able to add back some small amounts of grains, mostly rice but sometimes millet and sprouted quinona. I have had a great improvement by treating intestinal Candida which I didn't realize were causing some digestion problems by using Candida Herbs and Neem.

  21. I decided to have the test for the DQ markers at Enterolab instead of having the biopsy. It cost about $200 four years ago and I have not regretted spending the money. I have read that Dr. Fine sends out the samples for DNA markers to a reference lab (I think it's the US National Blood Bank lab but you can check it out on the website). I would suspect that the problems your group has is has more to do with intrepreting the test results than with their accuracy. I have a background in molecular genetics and biochemistry and it took me a while and lots of reading to understand what the test meant.

  22. When I had the blood tests done the anti-gliadin was elevated but the other test were negative and it also showed an allergy to cow's milk. Within a few days of starting the gluten-free diet I felt so much relieved and better that I did not want to eat gluten again. I read online that some experts were saying the endoscopy biopsy wasn't always necessary and decided to have the genetic tests done. They showed I had two DQ2 markers and had a very high predisposition to develop gluten sensitivity and besides one brother had autoimmune diabetes which one of my markers showed that I had a chance of developing that, too. This was four years ago and now more of the experts are backing off the endoscopy as a necessary test.
