ARCHIVED Friend Frustration!
GlutenFreeManna replied to The Glutenator's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Wow, yeah I have had some people that know celiac's that aren't as sensitive as well and it really makes it harder to explain that even a little bit of cc makes me very sick for days. A friend of a friend just has DH as a symptom and doesn't always eat strictly gluten free when out because her only symptom is the rash. Fortunately when I described my horrible... -
ARCHIVED Finally Found gluten-free Bisquick
GlutenFreeManna replied to TrillumHunter's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Try this: Open Original Shared Link I'm also going to ask about the ingredients. Does it have soy? I'm so eager to find this and make some biscuits with it. I don't miss bread, but I miss biscuits for some reason. Don't want to get my hopes up though if it has soy. -
ARCHIVED Biggest Obstacle In Coping With celiac disease
GlutenFreeManna replied to Mr.GF's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't know what religion you are talking about, but can you make gluten free bread (or wafers) for you communion bread for the whole church? I have even read here that there are places online you can order it (but I don't know where). So far I have been just avoiding the bread, because I haven't found a good substitute, but I would think it would be easier... -
ARCHIVED Friend Frustration!
GlutenFreeManna replied to The Glutenator's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What the heck does she mean?!? This right here tells me she thinks you are on some kind of fad diet that you could choose to not follow for a weekend. Does she think you are going to magically become healed and not have to eat gluten free? What did you say to her? Did your other friends back you up? I would avoid this "friend" in the future unless you... -
ARCHIVED Biggest Obstacle In Coping With celiac disease
GlutenFreeManna replied to Mr.GF's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have struggled with church things as well. Though I am not a pastor, but people at my church always want to bring you food when you are sick. Most of it food I can't eat (baked goods or chicken noodle soup or pasta dishes). We were up front and told people it was gluten making my ill (and explained no wheat, rye, barley, etc) but the little old ladies... -
ARCHIVED Biggest Obstacle In Coping With celiac disease
GlutenFreeManna replied to Mr.GF's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
How does the ketchup get you? Chick-fil-a's ketchup has gluten in it? I always put ketchup on my fries, but if that's the case I might try the waffles fries again and bring my own ketchup. I don't like the that ketchup has HFCS anyway. -
ARCHIVED Self Diagnosed- And Fell Off The Wagon
GlutenFreeManna replied to BcG3987's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Welcome back! I keep thinking I might fall off the wagon because I'm self-diagnosed, but I keep getting accidentally glutened every few weeks so I haven't had a chance to fall off. I'm sure I don't need to tell you this, but gluten free does not equal health food at all. You can make fried chicken gluten free, you just can't pick it up in a bucket... -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Negative But Diet Is Chaning Everything!
GlutenFreeManna replied to IngridBeth's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you had been avoiding bread and things like that before the test (you said you already realized they made you feel worse), then you were eating "gluten lite" and the test results may be wrong. In fact they are often false negatives. Listen to your body. If you have something else wrong, being gluten free will not prevent diagnosis of another illness... -
This thread has me wanting a grilled cheese. I'm eating low-lactose cheddar cheese on a rice cake for breakfast and it's not satisfying the craving. Now I will have to search out this Udi's bread.

ARCHIVED Flourless Chocolate Torte
GlutenFreeManna replied to Tina B's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks for sharing. This sounds decadent and wonderful! My only question is, do you think I could use unsweetened Baker's chocolate in place of the bittersweet? The unsweetened in the only one I have seen that doesn't have soy. Also I didn't know that heavy cream was very low in lactose, but I knew that about butter. I was just going to make the cake... -
ARCHIVED Labeled "gluten Free" Vs. No Gluten Listed In Label
GlutenFreeManna replied to chilligirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
As long as you are not getting glutened all the time your approach is fine. I eat very similarly to the woman in your post because I have several other foods I need to avoid and it is just easier and cheaper to make my own stuff. All those salad dressings that may be gluten free use soybean oil. Many of the gluten free labeled products contain soy flour... -
ARCHIVED I Am Soooooo Frustrated
GlutenFreeManna replied to Harley9999's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hey, so sorry you are still struggling so bad. I've only been doing this for around 6 months but I too still get glutened unintentionally. I still love food though, I have just learned to love different types of food. Do you like to cook? Almost all of my glutenings have come from eating food prepared by others or trying a new product. Maybe you should... -
ARCHIVED Rice Cakes - The Little Ones
GlutenFreeManna replied to 4boysmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Sadly, I don't think they are safe. You can look at the ingredients online here (select the product and then click nutritional info): Open Original Shared Link Just from glancing at a couple of them I saw Barley malt in one and tocopherols it two others. You would need to find out the source of the tocopherols. BTW, have you seen the unsafe ingredient... -
ARCHIVED There's Nothing Left To Eat Without Feeling Sick
GlutenFreeManna replied to sweeeeet's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
The tests can be wrong. In fact they are frequently false negatives. Have you tried a gluten free diet for longer than a few days? You should try a strict gluten free and dairy free for a month at least before challenging with gluten. You won't feel better right away. Most people feel better after two weeks, but some people take longer to heal. It's... -
ARCHIVED Friend Frustration!
GlutenFreeManna replied to The Glutenator's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ugh, how frustrating! Sounds like she might be one of those people that thinks eating gluten free means you just can't have bread. She probably thought the sushi would be safe and who knows what she was thinking for the wraps, but I know some people think flour tortillas are not made from wheat . I would just take my own food and if anyone asks tell... -
ARCHIVED The Value Of Reading The Label Properly...
GlutenFreeManna replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I did something similar when I was first diagnosed. I picked up a bag of cornmeal, glanced at the ingredients and thought they were okay, then I went home and made some yummy cornbread that made me sicker than a dog. I don't recall what was in the cornmeal, but it wasn't gluten free despite the absence of the word "wheat". -
ARCHIVED Anybody Opt Out Of Biopsy?
GlutenFreeManna replied to danaf617's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I did not have any testing--I self diagnosed with the diet. One reason why you may want to get it is if you think you will need positive test results to convince family members to take you seriously. Can you call the doctor that is supposed to do your endoscopy and ask to get put on a waiting list for any cancelations? Perhaps they can get you in sooner... -
ARCHIVED What Changes Happen After Diagnosis?
GlutenFreeManna replied to happylittlemama's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
-More energy! -No more hair loss, and just last week my hubby commented that my hair was growing in darker (it's blonde, but had turned almost white). I have never colored my hair and I am 30 years old, but I was losing my hair and going grey/white. -healthy nails that don't peel or break. -skin is somewhat dry still, but fewer breakouts and no more... -
ARCHIVED Soy Free Soy Sauce.
GlutenFreeManna replied to Juliebove's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Thanks! I went to the company website and found out they don't sell it yet in my state. I wonder if I ask at Trader Joe's if they will start carrying it? Otherwise I'll just have to wait until I take a vacation to go look for it. -
ARCHIVED Soy Free Soy Sauce.
GlutenFreeManna replied to Juliebove's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
That is very interesting. The closest sub I have found is balsamic vinegar. Can you share the brand name please? -
ARCHIVED Biggest Obstacle In Coping With celiac disease
GlutenFreeManna replied to Mr.GF's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I miss Chick-fil-a too. I heard their waffle fries were safe, but when I tried them I got a gluten reaction. -
It's like a miracle! Wow, sounds like she really did do some research and figured out you are not just a hypochondriac. Of course you still need to be on your guard, but it appears she is going to be more cooperative in the future. That's half the battle won right there.

ARCHIVED Excessive Sleep?
GlutenFreeManna replied to num1habsfan's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I agree. The number of meds you are on is troubling too because of the possibility of serious interactions. Go to Open Original Shared Link and plug in all of you meds plus vitamins and it will explain the possible interactions. Coma is one of the possible interaction effects. You need to tell your doctor about this sleepiness ASAP so they can adjust... -
ARCHIVED Possible Celiac Or Gluten Intolerance - Confused!
GlutenFreeManna replied to IngridBeth's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I second this. Many of us can't tolerate dairy at first because the villi in our small intestines has been damaged from the gluten. The villi are where the body produces lactase, which breaks down lactose in milk, cheese, etc. You could be lactose intolerant for now. It may get better if you avoid dairy for a long time. Some people have problems with... -
ARCHIVED Inconclusive
GlutenFreeManna replied to gibsongirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have never had any of the tests. I self-diagnosed via an elimination diet. Now there is no way I could go back to eating enough gluten to test. Even a little bit makes me sick for days. I've decided I don't need a piece of paper (test result) to tell me what my body is already telling me loud and clear. You could do the gene test later if you were...
