ARCHIVED Dry Beans
GlutenFreeManna replied to olygirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wow, this is very interesting. I had not thought about the possibility of CC in beans. I am still not able to tolerate dry beans. I thought it was just because they are hard on my digestive system, but maybe they have traces of gluten even when washed really well? Now I will have to consider getting some of those gluten free beans to try. I know I will... -
ARCHIVED Am I Over-Reacting To This?
GlutenFreeManna replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks everyone these are all good ideas about what's going on. I needed to hear that this was just not me imagining that this was strange behavior. And I do think it made me more emotional because I want children and I have had the miscarriages. She only knows about one miscarriage I had. We didn't tell the family with the others because I didn't want... -
ARCHIVED Tactfully Telling Someone That They "just Don't Get It"
GlutenFreeManna replied to MommyStina's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well at least she is seeing another doctor. Hopefully this one will straighten her out. Is there any chance she is confusing gluten free with low carb? I had someone ask me once if they were the same thing and I had to explain that there are many gluten free foods that are high in carbs, and that low carb diets are for weight loss whereas gluten free usually... -
ARCHIVED Any Gluten-Free Bisquick Mix Sightings?
GlutenFreeManna replied to MindytheOrganist's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I found it at Lowes Foods in Raleigh, NC for 3.99 a box. -
ARCHIVED Am I Over-Reacting To This?
GlutenFreeManna replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My mom has visited them and holds the baby for most of her visit and plays games with the three year old (my mom has no grandchildren yet so she treats them like grandchildren, bringing them gifts, etc.). I have also seen pictures of them on facebook with other family members and even friends of theirs. The OCD is not clinically diagnosed AFAIK but she... -
ARCHIVED Am I Over-Reacting To This?
GlutenFreeManna replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The thing is they know me well even though we don't see each other often. I grew up with my cousin and we were close as kids. We have kept in touch even though we haven't lived in the same city since I was 18. Maybe your are right about her OCD, maybe SHE doesn't feel like she knows me well enough. They did not let anyone else hold the baby, but it was... -
We recently visited some family that I don't see often (maybe 2-3 times per year). I was really excited to see my cousin's kids as I have never met their youngest girl (who is 10 months) and have only seen their three year old girl twice. I love kids, but I haven't been able to have any of my own (3 miscarriages in 3 years). I have worked in several church...

I haven't done a Thanksgiving gluten free yet, but this thread is making me hungry!

ARCHIVED We Tried The Bisquick Mix
GlutenFreeManna replied to macocha's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I finally found this while traveling. It was 3.99 at Lowes Foods in Raleigh, NC. So there is quite a bit of regional price differences. Can't wait to try making some biscuits. -
ARCHIVED When You Travel
GlutenFreeManna replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
If I'm staying at someone house I bring my own pan to cook in as well as a good knife and cutting board. If I'm staying at a hotel, I take plenty of food that is ready or easy to prepare and picnic ware (plastic spoons, plates, foil, saran wrap, containers to put leftovers in etc). I pretend I'm going camping and try to think of everything I could possibly... -
ARCHIVED What Do I Ask At A Restraurant?
GlutenFreeManna replied to Googles's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If they have a gluten free menu I ask for it as soon as I walk in the door, before being seated. If they don't have a clue what the gluten free menu is or can't find it, then RUN (or ask to speak to a manager if you are determined to eat there). Some places do have to go in the back and print it off the internet for you, like at Red Robin (they update the... -
ARCHIVED Visually Most Repulsive Gluteny Food
GlutenFreeManna replied to mushroom's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Americans are obsessed with dieting because many American's are fat, but also because the media tells them they should be super-skinny. So we have the problem compounded by people developing eating disorders and more people overeating and getting fat or being anorexic. That's my really simplified analysis anyway. There's also the Standard American Diet... -
ARCHIVED Mellow Mushroom to Offer Gluten Free Pizza - Celiac.com
GlutenFreeManna replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
I went to a Mellow Mushroom in Raleigh this weekend and it was the best gluten free pizza I have tried yet! It tasted just like a regular thin crust pizza to me. They had a ton of topping options. My only wish was that they could make it with a different type of cheese. I asked about using cheddar instead of mozzarella because cheddar is lower in lactose... -
ARCHIVED Visually Most Repulsive Gluteny Food
GlutenFreeManna replied to mushroom's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I can't remember what product the commercial is for, but one that really bugs me is the one where two women are at the laundromat. One woman asks her friend for a quarter and the other asks, aren't they dry yet? The woman who asks for the quarter replies she is trying to shrink them because she lost weight by eating whole grains. The only thing I can thing... -
ARCHIVED Really Interesting Results From Avoiding Gluten
GlutenFreeManna replied to Smarts's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
First of all, welcome to the self-diagnosed club! Even if the doctor tells you do not have the most common gene, that does not mean you don't have celiac or gluten intolerance. Your medical test results are none of your friends' business. They don't have to know every detail. You can tell them you have it without divulging the results of the tests. Some... -
I'm glad to know this. I have hit the + a few times on helpful posts, but I wasn't sure if it did anything.

Wow, you really found a great place! That's so cool she knew about blue cheese. Some people say bleu cheese is okay, but the cultures used to make it can be started on bread. I have read that in the US cultures are started in a lab without any bread or that even if they are started on bread, something about the process makes it a very small amount of gluten...

ARCHIVED Label Says Wheat But No Reaction?
GlutenFreeManna replied to Stylo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You may not have an immediate reaction to something with a very small amount of gluten, but that doesn't mean that it isn't doing damage. You could also have a delayed reaction. I very rarely react immediately to small amounts or cc. I always feel sick the next day or sometimes even two days later. Large amounts or certain foods I will know right away... -
ARCHIVED Top Three Worst Gf Products
GlutenFreeManna replied to anerissara's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I haven't done a lot of gluten free replacement products yet, but the worst so far have been: 1. Bob's Red Mill Pizza crust mix (was more like a cross between a biscuit and corn bread) 2. Hodgson's Mill rice pasta (Had an aftertaste like cardboard, even when I rinsed it well) 3. Gluten Free Pantry Scone and Muffin mix (made scones that crumbled and left... -
ARCHIVED Well Now I Got In A Fight At Pf Changs.
GlutenFreeManna replied to conniebky's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Girl, with as often as you eat there, they should give you a free meal for your troubles. Write a letter to corporate about how rude they were. Include the time of the order and the person you talked to if you know their name. Be sure to mention how often you frequent their restaurant for their gluten free menu. -
I had a reaction to Chick-fil-A's fries too. I was so sad that I can't eat there, at least not at my local one. Not all restaurants are the same. This is also a good lesson that we can't just order something that "should" be gluten free without asking about cc and explaining the situation. If you feel like chancing it again, go in during a slow time and...

ARCHIVED Forum So Slow--Is It My Computer?
GlutenFreeManna replied to sue1234's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
I have Verizon's slowest "high speed" internet (not FIOS, but not dial up) and am running google chrome on a five year old PC. I also tried it in Firefox just now to test the speed. Pages load pretty much instantly. In fact, sometimes I am too fast answering replies and I get the error message that Admin has made it so I can't answer in 20 seconds. SO... -
ARCHIVED I Have Fingernails!
GlutenFreeManna replied to India's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have healthy nails again too. Isn't it great? One suggestion, if your "increased calcium intake" is due to increased dairy, perhaps you need to cut that out for a while to see if the pain and bloating goes away. -
ARCHIVED I Had A Miracle
GlutenFreeManna replied to conniebky's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had blurred vision off and on pretty bad for a few years pre-diagnosis. I thought I was just getting older. I was sure I would need a new prescription for my glasses, but I didn't have eye insurance or the money for an eye exam (let alone new glasses) for a few years, so I kept putting it off. Finally got eye insurance in January, went to the eye doctor... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else Have This?
GlutenFreeManna replied to hercules25's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You need to give the diet more time than a week to work. Some people don't feel better for a few months. Also what are you eating? Be sure to eat mostly whole foods/natural gluten free items instead of a bunch of gluten free replacement foods.
