  1. Shoot, I had to pass on the cookies, but at that price I decided to risk trying the yellow cake. I'm not super sensitive to cc soy like I am cc gluten so maybe it will be okay when I try it. Now that I'm thinking about it my guess is that they make all the gluten-free mixes on the same equipment. Pretty much anything with chocolate has soy added. That...
  2. Hopefully this is just at Food Lion stores or maybe even select stores within the chain. In the last few months I have seen my Food Lion stores phase out many of their organic products and one store practically eliminated the organics section completely, which was where most the gluten free stuff was. This particular store where I saw the closeouts never...
  3. I have not had an accidental glutening happen yet at that time, but I can tell you that before going gluten free my PMS was horrible. In addition to the symptoms to you mentioned I would cry uncontrollably for no reason a day or two before it started. I haven't had an unexplained crying session since going gluten free
  4. For anyone who has a Food Lion grocery store nearby, they had Betty Crocker gluten-free Yellow Cake mix and Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix on Closeout price for $1.88 each. These are regular $3.79, so it's huge savings. I looked at the boxes carefully and could not see anything wrong with them, (but they did say "may contain soy on the cake and "contains soy...
  5. I haven't found one either. Most of the one's I looked at had soy in them. Can you use Almond milk instead?
  6. Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I'm glad to know there are many gluten free sauces out there.
  7. Interesting. I am ambidextrous, but write with my right hand. I think I SHOULD have been left handed, but I also went to a school where the teachers would take the pencil out of your left hand and make you use your right. I do some sports with both hands equally well (ex: bowling, softball), but I paint better (as in mural art) with my left hand than my...
  8. I don't know the answer, but my best guess would be that it has something to do with the sensitivity of the tests. The tests are currently not very accurate from what I have read. Your body's response is a much more accurate gauge at this time. I really do hope that that changes in the future and someone develops an accurate, scientifically validated test...
  9. Ooh Good thread. I was just asking this question. I have some Mrs. Leepers corn pasta and some Trader Joe's rice pasta in my pantry so I'll be trying them both for pasta salads.
  10. I've been making my own, but it's time consuming and I really don't want to make it with the hot days we have been having, so I need recommendations on jarred/canned pasta sauces. Which ones are for sure gluten free? I went to the store and got overwhelmed with the number of jars that had "natural flavors" or other vague ingredients. (PS: I need them...
  11. Good ideas! I can have goat cheese, so I would use that in place of feta. What type of gluten-free pasta do you use in your pasta salad? I'm not a big fan of mayonnaise in general but I did make a yummy potato salad with green beans, red pepper and onion. The dressing base was red wine vinegar and olive oil, Kosher salt, garlic clove and mustard.
  12. Thanks I don't think I've ever done tuna tacos and I never would have thought to have chicken soup cold. Keep the ideas coming.
  13. A few things are probably going on: 1. They are covering their own behinds in the e-mails so they are not going to say for certain either way. 2. The people you call may have no clue what "gluten free" means so they make up an answer that sounds good. 3. The people who answer the phone think "gluten free" is just a fad of some sort so they don't take...
  14. I'm at the point where I won't eat someplace without asking questions of the chef or manager first. If they seem to know what they are doing then I will order off their gluten-free menu, but if I ask questions about cross contamination and they have no idea what I'm talking about then I know to go elsewhere. So far I have avoided well-intentioned friends...
  15. It's been in the upper 90's here lately (feels like over 100 with humidity) and I don't want to cook anything. I use my crock pot quite a bit, but I often don't want to eat hot food either. I can only eat so much raw veggies...I've been eating salads and cold rice paper wrappers filled with cooked meat and veggies. I don't like to eat a lot of processed...
  16. Welcome to the self-diagnosed club! If your symptoms come back when you eat gluten than you have your answer. No need to get a medical diagnosis. Just think of all the things you wanted to do while you were "that monster" that wasn't you and start doing them! And as you enjoy your new found healthy life, continually remind yourself that you would not...
  17. It really sounds like what happened is your body healed a little bit during those two months and you became more sensitive to the small amounts of gluten you were still consuming. This often happens from what I read here. Saying "a little bit won't hurt" Is like saying a little poison won't hurt with gluten. Or it's like an alcoholic going to AA when...
  18. Thanks for sharing your progress and I hope you will keep updating. It may take years for some things to completely resolve as they have to heal from years of eating gluten. I'm just curious--are you doing Casein Free as well for your Autistic kids?
  19. Well I've only been gluten-free for six months, but I can say for sure my symptoms are more severe now. I never had bad gastro symptoms before going gluten free, just bloating and gas. My symptoms were mostly neuro. Now I get violent stomach pains and bloody D a few days after being glutened as well as the neuro symptoms (headaches, shaky hands, fatigue...
  20. I don't live in that part of VA, but I'm jealous. DC has TONS of gluten free restaurants. You will also have Whole Foods and Trader Joe's for gluten free grocery shopping.
  21. Funny you should post this. I JUST found this today. I got Trader Joe's brown rice spaghetti for 1.99 and Trader Joe's "Rice Sticks" Traditional Thai Style Pasta also cheap (I want to say it was 1.29, but that sounds too low, pretty sure it was under $2). The Thai Style pasta looks like linguine or fettuccine and I was thinking about using it in a recipe...
  22. Is this in the US? Everything I can find about it online says it was introduced in Australia and New Zealand.
  23. My vote is for cc from your hubby while in the car. However I also wanted to share that soy gives me a headache/brain fog within minutes of consuming it and I will be tired the next day. It's even worse if it is "partially hydrogenated soy" so those corn taco shells would not be safe for me. I have been able to tolerate a little soybean oil if it is organic...
  24. Oh, I'm so sad for you if that's the case. I love popcorn too. Is it possible that you just ate too much corn over a two day period? It's not exactly an easy food for the body to digest. Lay off it for a couple weeks and then try some plain whole corn and see if you have the symptoms again.
  25. Have you tried Mission brand corn tortillas? I don't think they say gluten free on the package, but I have eaten these and have not had a reaction. They are made on dedicated lines only used for other corn products: Open Original Shared Link There is a trick to pre-made corn tortillas, though. You have to heat them before using, otherwise they fall apart...
