  1. I love to cut an acorn squash in half, put the halves in my crock pot and fill them with different things--You can go sweet and fill with apples or applesauce with cinnimon, brown sugar, raisons or craisins and walnuts or pecans. Or fill with a savory ground meat filling--ground turkey and rice with sage and butter is good. Last year I tried delicata...
  2. Oops, I mis-typed that. It was actually called Middle Eastern Rice. Here's the recipe: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/middle-eastern-rice-with-black-beans-and-chickpeas/detail.aspx It was just okay. I felt like the recipe would have been better with ground beef or lamb instead of ground turkey. The rice was good but the turkey just didn't taste right...
  3. Any allergy can get worse at any time. Best thing to do is to avoid bananas and latex until you can get to see a dr. If it's an allergy then it won't matter if you stop eating the food as far as testing goes (unlike celaic testing). They will do skin prick and possibly blood tests to test for an IgE allergy. If nothing shows up in the tests the next step...
  4. I have used Mission brand corn tortilla--spray with oil and heat in oven. Even better however is if you can make your own shells. Get some MaSeCa brand Masa Harina (corn flour) and follow the directions on the bag. It's nothing more than mixing the masa with water to make a dough. It's easier if you have a tortilla press but it you don't you can press...
  5. The above three would be top on my list. I'll probably never be able to have even gluten-free versions however as croissants and puff pastry depend on layers of butter and I cannot have dairy or soy. Earth Balance soy free dairy free spread is good but it doesn't chill to the extent that butter does. Also if anyone can make a gluten-free Triscuit or...
  6. My tests and results were all very similar to yours except for the IBS diagnosis. I can't remmember years but basically it went like this: Summer after my first year of grad school I tried eating "healthy" which involved eating more whole wheat products. I started having severe C, ended up in the hospital more than once with bad gut pain, vomiting green...
  7. Welcome betty! I can't answer your questions but you might want to post this as a new topic in order to get some answers about Germany specifically. You can also search the board for older posts about Germany using the "Search forum via google" box in the upper right corner.
  8. I love squash too! I can't get enough of it during this season.
  9. Mediterranean rice with ground turkey, chickpeas and black beans.
  10. I wasn't talking about people trying it out because they thought gluten might be making them sick. Everyone does things imperfectly in the beginning because it takes time to learn some things like cross contamination. That's understandable. However you know NOW the people that told you small amounts of wheat now and then were okay were not really aware...
  11. Glad you got it figured out! 20 biopsies, WOW! I hope they actually find something after all you went through challenging gluten for 3 months.
  12. I find it helps to go in with a detailed list written in the order of the grocery store layout. Most of my items come from the fresh produce and meat sections but if I do need to venture down an aisle I know in advance which brand of something I am buying. If I need to buy something I have never bought before (like a new type of condiment) I try to research...
  13. I develop hives from touching it too. However I found out this year I have an allergy to wheat in addition to the auto-immune reactions when I ingest it. So if you have hives (not to be confused with DH) you may want to get allergy testing done. Benedryl helps with the hives but it makes me sleep. ETA: I also did not start having this reaction (hives...
  14. I can't think of anything new right now but I was reminded of this old thread:
  15. A company called Bakery On Main makes yummy gluten-free granola that is also oatmeal free. Open Original Shared Link The above is my favorite but they have several varieties. The desription says: "We gently toast corn flakes and rice crisps with sesame, sunflower, and flax seeds into golden clusters of crunchy goodness. Then we add plump cranberries...
  16. I read about it but I wasn't sure it was true until I had a reaction myself. While house hunting we looked at a house that was being renovated and had big holes punched throught the drywall. Drywall dust everywhere! I should have known to stay out but I didn't, I went and toured it and two days later I was sick as can be with all my typical sympotms of...
  17. Chicken pot pie Crust was good (Bette Hagman's recipe), filling was just okay. I was going from a recipe with dairy in it and converting it to make it dairy free/soy free as well as gluten-free. Still needs a little tweaking.
  18. You can try substituting but, no not all gluten-free "all Purpose" flours are the same. You may have good results if the ingredients are the same for both flour mixes, the ingredients can vary widely. It's best to stick with a recipe written for that particular flour brand (when talking about mixes not individual flours), especially when you are just learning...
  19. I take my own large skillet with a lid, cutting board and a knife when I travel. I can make a lot of meals in just the one pan without any special gluten-free items (chili, stir-frys, risotto, etc). I will use the big metal utensils/metal spatualas for cooking the food at my family's house (I just wash them off first to make sure there's no flour on them...
  20. Congratulations! I'm so glad your day went well and the cake was good. Your off to a great start now with a new husband that knows that gluten-free food can be good food too! Enjoy your honeymoon!
  21. Right. I guess I should just say people that do things when they don't know the reasons behind doing the things they do bother me in general. They saw some celeb mention gluten-free and they decide to try it without even knowing what gluten-free means. I do think a lot of people confuse it with a low carb diet too and think it just means not eating bread...
  22. I think that IS different. Ordering the diet soda with the pizza has some "advantages" in their mind. Whether there is an actual health advantage or not is a different question, but it does cut down on calories or sugar in their total meal. What is the so-called advantage of cutting back on gluten but not eliminating it? They should call it a low carb...
  23. I only get upset at the people that claim they are gluten free and then turn around and eat something with gluten. I don't care why they are gluten-free, I just want them to be serious about it/educated about it.
  24. I would try a few recipes in the oven first and see if you like having home baked bread. As far as the costs it seems to vary based on where you live. Some people can get the flours for less than loaves of gluten-free bread. For me it is about even (Rudi's gluten-free bread is 6.99 and box of gluten-free flour is 6.99). I make the homemade bread for a...
  25. It will get better! For treats at school check out products by a company called "Enjoy Life". All of their products are free of the 8 major allergens and gluten. So you can send them even if your school is nut free. Open Original Shared Link
