ARCHIVED Labeling Of Imported Foods
love2travel replied to kittty's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This would make me uncomfortable, too. It is most likely rice but "flour" is suspect in my mind. I have seen lots of imported items that should be labelled "wheat" or whatever but are not at small family-run hole-in-the-wall ethnic shops that I love so much. They are supposed to comply but not all do. And the labelling laws in Canada just became far stiffer... -
ARCHIVED Need A Brand Of Palm Sugar
love2travel replied to Joe0123's topic in Super Sensitive People
Asian stores are great for so many things, such as very fine rice flour, which is a lot finer than those in regular grocery stores. Not to mention cheaper! One of the palm sugars in my pantry is Cock brand and contains only 100% pure palm sugar. The other is in Asian which I cannot read. Sorry! But the ingredient lists only 100% palm sugar. ... -
Oh, you poor thing. Hopefully you are able to enjoy dairy again soon! Guess what? In the grocery store yesterday I found lactose and gluten free chocolate milk! I was sooooo happy as I have cravings for that once in awhile. My husband tried it and said it is just as good as his regular chocolate milk.

ARCHIVED What Did You Have For Lunch Today?
love2travel replied to love2travel's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
It varies. Yesterday was a toasted purchased bagel (homemade are so much better!). So, it was the toasted bagel topped with tomato from my garden, ham, poached egg and hollandaise. One of my favourite lunches. I had the one purchased bagel languishing in the freezer (though bagels make far better croutons than purchased bread). -
This has just happened to me as well. When I was first diagnosed with celiac 1.5 years ago, I was able to tolerate dairy. Shortly after, I could not so I went dairy free for several months which improved GI issues. Sadly, the past two weeks or so I am unable to tolerate some dairy again (soft and semi-soft cheeses and milk). But I can eat a bit of aged...

ARCHIVED Need A Brand Of Palm Sugar
love2travel replied to Joe0123's topic in Super Sensitive People
The palm sugars I buy are always gluten free. I purchase them at an Asian store here in Canada. -
ARCHIVED Deli Meat
love2travel replied to GottaSki's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
True enough. The differences between countries can be quite vast, can't they? I was shocked I was only able to find one kind of ham out of six or seven that did not include wheat. I should have made it clear in my posts I live in Canada. My intent was to mention it for the benefit of fellow Canadians. Thanks for pointing it out. -

ARCHIVED It's Only 9:30...and I've Already Run To The Bathroom 3 Times!
love2travel replied to luvrdeo's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Another possibility may be dairy or casein. After I went gluten free for a little while I could no longer tolerate dairy. So, I went off for several months and was able to introduce it back into my diet. But it has really bothered me again for about two weeks. I've been strictly gluten free for about 1.5 years. -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Dining & Traveling With Other Allergies
love2travel replied to amahones's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
We travel internationally and I have celiac. No, it is not easy, but I refuse to allow celiac to prevent me from doing what I love most. The most difficult part for me is the flights and airports. The food on Air Canada, Lufthansa, etc. is absolutely horrid so I take along my own snacks. Delays are inevitable so I plan ahead. The only options available... -
ARCHIVED Deli Meat
love2travel replied to GottaSki's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The other day I was buying ham and found 3 or 4 brands that contained wheat! I do not recall the names but if I think of it I will write them down and add them here. In fact, I had difficulty buying ham without. I think one was a President's Choice but will double check. ETA: Oops - this was supposed to a separate post. Not sure how this happened... -
The only type of romance I read is the Wuthering Heights classic sort. Same with Emma, etc. but none of this modern fluff romamce stuff that has no real meaning or depth.

My Kobo only comes out when we travel so I do not need to take a thousand books along with me. I have 300 books downloaded on it which will be sufficient for our upcoming trip in three weeks! I'm with you on real books. There will never, ever be a replacement for the feel, look, smell of them. Or libraries. I will continue going into a real library for...

For those of you who love to travel (or dream of it), this may appeal. Instead of taking a book in with me to the bathroom I request travel brochures from various countries. You do not have to become involved in a book - just drool over the photos. Most of the brochures I order are B&B accommodations that take ages to get through. Right now I am ...

I've tried reading my husband's accounting law and tax books but man - those are as dry as a stick! So, I read shampoo bottles and soap thingies when I am in the bathroom.

Am I the only one who has memorized labels on bottles of shampoo? Does "Wet hair. Lather. Rinse. Repeat." sound familiar? I cannot sit still anywhere without some book or label to read. I just can't stand it.

ARCHIVED If A Bun Touches A Burger?
love2travel replied to buckwheat's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Best of all, easy to make your own burgers. Safe and about a million times better for you as well as tastier. If you do not make buns, just throw it onto an Udi's or Kinnickinnik (or other) bun. You can make your own fabulous toppings, too. You'll never go back to a fast food burger. And no worries about CC! -
ARCHIVED I Need Good Bread!
love2travel replied to roxieb73's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Simona's Challah bread (search for recipe here) is one of the best I've made. In fact, I plan to make it again tomorrow. It is the closest to the real thing I have come across. You actually roll it out and form it! -

ARCHIVED The Changing Of The Seasons...
love2travel replied to ~**caselynn**~'s topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
We've had leaves changing for quite awhile already. Our night lows are getting down to only 6-7 Celsius. And you think Maine and Conneticut winters are bad - they are nothing like ours here in Alberta! We have snow on the ground for a good six months and the temperatures are often -40C OR -40F for weeks on end. Our vehicles have square tires, even when...
